Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted August 13, 2002 A guy who used to run autograph shows wrote a book saying who was a jerk and who wasn't. Most of the people are old Baseball players. Some of the jerks mentioned. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Rickey Henderson, Barry Bonds, Gaylord Perry, and Tom Seaver. The one's that weren't.Brooks Robinson, Billly Williams, Alan Trammell, and Dale Murphy. Does anyone have any personal stories involving any pro athlete. Guest bob_barron Report post Posted August 13, 2002 After a basketball game me and some kids waited to see my favourite Net Kenny Anderson. Kenny came out, totally ignored us and got into a car smelling of smoke and women. Tony Pena also refused to sign. I've also met- All nice- Stephon Marbury, Tony Delk, Shawn Marion, Jose Hernandez, Doug Drabeck, Sterling Sharpe, Dick Vitale, 3B from 61 Yankees (forget name) and Keith Olbermann. All those guys were nice
Guest DrTom Report post Posted August 13, 2002 Of the people on the original list, I've only met Brooks Robinson, and he was an unfailingly nice man. Cal Ripken and his brother Billy were also quite nice, though Billy is usually the more personable of the two. My grandfather worked for the Baltimore Sun for years, so in 1982, he got the current Orioles reporter to take a friend and I into the clubhouse for autographs. All the players and coaches were happy to sign for us, though Jim Palmer intially balked (no pun intended) at doing it because he was pitching that day. And I think Scott McGregor was busy in a prayer session. But everyone else was nice and polite. The fact that we were a pair of eight year-olds accompanied by the local beat reporter might have had something to do with that... who knows? I just know I wish I still had the bloody program. Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted August 14, 2002 I've gotten about 50 autographs and have no real jerk stories. A couple of people seemed kind of annoyed but signed the autographs anyway. I managed to get Barry Bonds's autograph about 10 years ago when he was with the Pirates and he was very nice, maybe it was because I was pretty young(I think I was 10-11 at the time) or because he has changed over the years. Guest Grenouille Report post Posted August 14, 2002 My aunt’s cousin was the General Manager for the New Britain Red Sox back in the late 80s-early 90s. We had some kind of family gathering at her house and her cousin comes in with a top prospect that was going to be doing an autograph signing at a local supermarket. This guy was huge, but very nice and was willing to give free autographs to me and all my cousins. His name, Mo Vaughn.
Guest Mad the Swine Report post Posted August 14, 2002 bob_barron metioned the 3B from the '61 Yankees - would that be Clete Boyer? The only people I've met are at the parks. Most were during spring training. Moises Alou Andy Ashby Will Clark Jayson Durocher (at a minor league game. Nicest guy of the bunch. instead of signing my beat up old Little League ball, he gave me a South Atlantic League ball and signed it.) Bob Feller Gary Gaetti (very nice guy. made some deals with some guys that exchanged autographs for popcorn) Alex Gonzalez (the one that played for the Blue Jays) Alfredo Griffin Pat Hentgen Jeff Juden Dave Justice Marty Malloy Mike Mordecai John Olerud (another standout nice guy) Joe Oliver Herb Score John Smiley Eddie Taubensee Omar Vizquel
Guest the pinjockey Report post Posted August 14, 2002 Brooks Robinson has to be the nicest guy in the world. My roommate's uncle is really good friends with him so I met him once and he is one of the nicest people you could ever meet.

Guest bob_barron Report post Posted August 14, 2002 Another almost encounter- I went to Mets v. Braves Game 4 of the NLCS. We got there really early so I got to watch Braves BP. Chipper had finished batting and I was yelling: Chipper! Chipper! and he was gonna come over and probably sign for me. But then all the Mets fans started yelling Hooters Hooters and taunting him so he stayed away. Fucking mets fans.

Guest alkeiper Report post Posted August 14, 2002 Minor league games are good places for autographs. Went to Scranton last week and got my Phillies cap signed by malon Byrd, David Doster, Chase Utley, Eric Valent, and Phillies GM Ed Wade. Marlon Byrd reminds me a lot of Kirby Puckett. Same build, and pretty much the same skill set as well.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted August 14, 2002 I met Ricky Henderson, and he was nice to me... he said Henderson signs everything really slowly, because he gets paid by the hour.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted August 14, 2002 What is the problem with these old jerks. They are getting paid good money for doing these autograph shows. At least have the common courtesy to thank the fans for spending $80 dollars, on signature. One reason alot of these players are such jerks is they're jealous that the players today make so much more than they did.

Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted August 16, 2002 I met Ricky Henderson, and he was nice to me... he said Henderson signs everything really slowly, because he gets paid by the hour. I noticed that he signed an autograph for me pretty slowly. I guess that is kind of a bad thing for whoever's paying him, but it's a good thing for the fans because they get more of a chance to talk to him. He was nice, but he talked in the third person to me which was weird.
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted August 16, 2002 Don't worry, he talks to everyone that way :b
Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted August 16, 2002 Yeah I know, I've seen interviews like that too. It made me feel weird when he talked to me like that though.

Guest meanmaisch Report post Posted August 16, 2002 Byrd is going to be something for the Phils and Utley could be decent as well. Doster is a career minor leaguer, but is good for the team. Valent was considered a top prospect last year, but a terrible stint in the majors did not help him at all. I'm surprised he hasn't been traded. I feel bad for Ed Wade at times. I would like to see what he could actually do, if he was actually allowed to spend some money.
