Why it is hard to get into non pro-level sports...

Well what I have figured out is that WINNING has no relevence on the highschool/college level. For the fans it matters cause they have pride in their team, but for the players it doesn't really matter. Those games are about posession and not points. For example, if you have a star running back looking to go to college on scholarship, it doesn't matter how is team does, if he is good, that is all that really matter, and scouts regularly tell elite players that. I have a soft spot for College basketball just because there seems to be a lot of excitement, and usually the top 10 teams are all roughly even, not like college football when the top 2 teams are leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of the "top 25"

Another reason is that the roster is always changing, which hurts any chance for the fan base to develop a following for any particular players. These players have a finite amount of time at these levels and then they move on to the pros.

In Canada, it has to do with coverage, plain and simple. Its hard to get involved in something you can't find anything about. CBC will show amateur sports on the weekends during the daytime, but I'm usually not home to watch it.

Mostly coverage i believe. ESPN only shows highlights from the "majors" unless something spectacular happens. Local broadcasts are left to show local sporting news and in most instances have 5 minutes to cover the major sporting scores along with local minor leagues and high school scores.

It's hard to get into high school sports other than your own high school just because complete lack of coverage, or not caring.

 

I love college sports, and ESPN gives them (that being football and basketball) a ton of time, as well as the local news aroudn here (western PA). In my opinion, college basketball is leaps and bounds over NBA, and college football is nearly as good as NFL.

 

You know what sport rules?! College lacrosse, baby. Saw the Virginia/Syracuse semifinal that went into OT. Great stuff.

 

I also watched the college hockey championship, and I'm not a big hockey fan, but that sucked me in. I think it just means so much more when the players aren't hired mercenaries.

To me, it's the opposite.

 

I don't care for pro basketball. Plain and simple, I think it's a farce.

 

I love college basketball and I love high school basketball even more. I haven't missed a high school home game in five years and I've seen most road games. I've even researched Georgia's high school basketball history.

 

Pro football, I like. It's nowhere near college football to me and even my sucky high school program brings more excitement than the action in the pros.

 

We do have local coverage; we're a consolidated county high school with one weekly paper. One larger paper in the area hates us for unknown reasons and the other likes us, but doesn't cover us. Our nearest television coverage is also an hour and a half away and so, they don't care, either.
