most overrated movies

Jurassic Park may suck, but it did wonders for FX.

Star Wars graphics aint amazing compared to somthing like the Matrix.

I am somewhat of a Star Wars fan, I enjoy the movies, but I'm not a nerd over it.

American Pie: unfunny rubbish

The Nutty Professor: Total shite and the dinner table scene is humerous for 30 seconds at most.

Saving Private Ryan: It just wasn't that good and i've seen much better war movies.

Pearl Harbor: Alot of people realized that this was a piece of shit, but still alot of people claim it to be a good movie. So the fact that anyone can say that it was good makes it very overrated.

hmm...that's all i can think off the top of my head.

Um what exactly did Jurassic Park do for fx? It just happened to be the first movie to use alot of the fx that had been in development for years. Jurassic Park didn't lead to new fx development.

When you compare the time that each movie came out Star Wars fx is just as "amazing" as Matrix fx.

You can't compare two things from totally different eras without factoring in the differences in eras.

Thats what I was saying. In the 70's the FX's were amazing.

In in our era, Jurassic Park's FX's blew our mind.

Jurrasic Park's fx blew your mind? Sure it was well done but it was just dinosaurs not exactly something mind blowing.

I would buy it if you said something like Matrix but Dinosaurs?

I guess I am the only one who found it mind blowing, oh well, it's all good.

On the contrary, realistic looking, moving, and sounding dinosaurs are a hell of a lot more impressive than anything the Matrix did. Bullet-time? Whoooo. *twirls finger unenthusiastically*

I agree with Chirs and Luger. The stuff in Jurassic Park was pretty goddamned amazing at the time, and it still is pretty goddamned amazing. And am I the only one that thought it was really good, to boot? Hell, I saw it like 5 times in the theatre. Of course, I was only like 10, but still. I have it on tape, too.

The most overrated movie in my recent memory is Mulholland Drive. I had been told by several people that this was a great movie and, in my humble opinion, it was utter crap. It should have come with a half-hour segment before the movie began wherein David Lynch explains exactly WHAT THE FUCK IT'S ABOUT. All style, no substance.

Star Wars

Gladiator

Titanic

Saving Private Ryan ( I enjoyed Thin Red Line a ton more)

A Beautiful Mind- I will never like this movie, simply for the fact that LOTR did not win best picture.

Eh...I guess i'm just not all that impressed with a computer generated dino.

I suppose i'm just more impressed by "old school fx" which actually took talent and creativity to pull off well. It would take a long time for someone off to street to learn the trade and do good work.

Don't get me wrong i'm not saying that computer fx is easy to do and it doesn't reaquire talent. I know it's alot more complex then just click a button and poof it's done. Computer fx is complicated work that is probably hard to understand. After however long it takes to learn how to work the equipment someone off the street would be able to do it and come out with good results.

Again don't get me wrong i'm not "bashing" computer fx. I don't care if it's old school or computer as long as it is well done. I'm just saying that great old school will always impress me more then great computer programming.

Until computer fx gives us something truly mind blowing i'm not overly impressed by it. I need to see more then realistic dinos to blow my mind. Before long computer fx will create something truly mind blowing because they are getting closer to it every year. But whatever movie ends up being the true computer fx mind blower it will need a good story or premise as well. FX only can be impressive...but not mind blowing.

Oh haysoos you people need to get the hell over it. Oh boo hoo your favorite movie didn't win who cares. I haven't seen it yet but even if it was a good movie it lost to another good movie so why the fuck are you crying about it. It isn't like it lost to a movie that didn't deserve a nomination yet alone a win. If it lost to Titanic or Gladiator then ok your complaining would be understandable. But to complain about another good movie beating a good movie that you happened to like is just plain childish.

Bitch and cry all you want but A Beautiful Mind was a good movie too and it's not some travesty that LOTR lost to it.

Correct, good sir. Good movies as they were, both movies were heavily flawed, and in the end about equally good.

The TRAVESTY, however, and I smell flames a-comin', is that A Beautiful Mind won out over Moulin Rouge, and neither Mulholland Drive OR Memento was even nominated.

I haven't actually SEEN Gosford Park or In The Bedroom yet, so I'll refrain from comment on those.

And THANK YOU, godthedog, for pointing out the exact three TRUE Best Pictures of 2000. Almost Famous, Requiem For a Dream, and Wonder Boys in case you all weren't paying attention.

Back on topic...

The Star Wars movies are SLIGHTLY overrated, but still an awesome saga.

NUTS TO ANYONE who claims American Beauty is overrated. You are all !!! Every last one of you!!!

No flames here as i also liked Moulin Rouge alot. It was a crime that Memento didn't even get nominated. I haven't seen Mulholland Drive but Lynch never gets the attention of Oscar so no surprise i mean we can't have Oscar associated with weirdos now can we.

I'm still pissed about Requeim getting hardly any respect from Oscar and about Julia beating the much more deserving Ellen Burstyn. But we can't expect Oscar to nominate a movie with graphic drug use and sex now can we. Of course the movie does a better job of showing kids that drugs are bad then 20,000 just say no commercials would do but who are we to expect the Oscars to chase off advertisers and scaring suburban mothers by nominating a drug use movie for best pictures.

baaah...fucking Holywood

Well that's kinda meaningless from someone who has given evidence of having the attention span of a crack head on speed.

Besides there was no possible way that it would've bombed. And it's impossible for the next two to bomb. There's too many fans of the books for any of them to bomb.

I'm unable to argue this without assuming a pretentious posture and assuming some very unflattering things about those who mistakenly believe American Beauty is a good movie. So I won't bother.

I'll concede I'm a bit crazy. But I'm a crazy man with better taste than you. :)

I always thought the opening shot of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the best sci-fi looking seen in my opinion.

In my opinion its better because I'm a Star Trek mark more than Star Wars. I think ROTJ rocked hard.

Lord of the Rings is pretty overrated. I found myself wondering who everyone was and what exactly was happening at some points. It seemed like the Sean Bean guy and the archer just sort of appear without any sort of introduction as to who they are.

On a side note has anyone found it ironic that the sort of magic and fantasy stuff that was made in the 80s (and didn't really light up the box office) is now raking in huge money? LOTR reminded me of Willow (which I liked a LOT more even though it was actually a ripoff of LOTR books). Excalibur was an awesome movie that didn't make a huge amount of money either. Also, am I the only one who thinks Harry Potter is oddly similar to Young Sherlock Holmes?

I think its all because the movies are based on books which makes the movie more marketable.

Ok, I'm going to resist the urge to get all LOTR-smarkish on your ass and just point out some things that hopefully will make it seem more clear. Before the council of the ring is held, Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom ride up and Hugo Weavings character talks about how the trouble of the ring belongs to all people of middle-earth. I don't know about you, but I found the message to be clear enough: They're here to help save the frickin' day.

Don't get me wrong, I found Beautiful Mind to be a great movie, just not Best Picture worthy. To me, movies are all about suspending beliefs and putting somebody in a world that is not theirs. LOTR felt like 100% magic and I loved that. I didn't get the 100% magic vibe from Beautiful Mind and I wouldn't expect to, either. A very good movie, just not best picture worthy. Having said that, I would have picked Memento to win best picture and Sean Penn to win best actor, but maybe that's just me.

CHUD, I can think of 2 sci-fi films with better FX than Return Of The Jedi:

Aliens and Terminator 2. As far as I'm concerned, no movie has out-done the FX in T2.

Oh, more overrated flicks:

Romeo & Juliet, the one with DiCaprio. Wait, didn't I already say this? Yeah, I did, but it deserves a second mention. Not only did the writers pretty much re-write the play at points by changing the sequence of dialog, but they also took it WAY too seriously (the first half of the play, up until the death of Mercutio or so, is a comedy).

Ghost World. I'm still the only person I've ever heard say something bad about it.
