The White Stripes

Recommended Posts

Guest O.J. Hart

I bet alot of you haven't heard of the White Stripes. But, they performed at the MTV Movie Awards his year, and their video "Fell in Love With a Girl" is up for video of the year at the VMA's. Their best song in my mind is "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground", their newest release.

Their names are John White, guitar, and Meg Wgite, drums. They are from Detoit and people can't figure out if they are brother and sister or husband and wife, it hasnt been announced yet.

What do you guys think of this band?

They're ex-spouses, if I'm not mistaken. The marriage certificate found its way onto the Internet not too long ago, but that sort of thing could be fabricated. In any case...yeah, the White Stripes are a fucking great band. Definitely the best of this latest crop of "garage rock" bands. White Blood Cells is definitely their best album thus far, but I'd suggest picking up De Stijl as well. It's a lot more varied--and, thus, a bit less consistent--than their other two albums, but definitely worth the purchase.

Edit: It's Jack White, by the way.

I love White Blood Cells. Can toss it in any day, and that opening squeal-riff of "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" boils the blood anytime I hear it.

Much like the rest of the world, I've yet to dive into the back catalogue, but I'm quite happy with what I've got so far.

Allow me to express the pleasure I derive from listening to them, as well.

I like them. I'm thus far enjoying this whole "garage rock" rebirth, but i know they will burn it out soon enough.

I saw them on that mtv award show and was wondering. Are they really just a two person band?

They're decent... But I just wanted to inform you guys that they are actually brother and sister, despite what previous posts say.

I thought they were brother and sister too, and that's what they say, but now people are posting their wedding certificates and divorce certificates and shit. Weird. Still, i think they are ok, like most of the new lo fi types.

There is a reason the guitar squeals and the drummers all out of order with the guitar during live shows. THEY SUCK!!! Did you see them on the MTV Movie Awards? They went through 3 songs. By the last song the drummer was playing out of order and the guitarist forgot the words.

Exactly how did you come to that conclusion?

And "Dead Leaves" is a good song, but that's all I really like from them.

By just listening and cringing. Also watch the audience, they just sit theere bored as hell. They are just a horrible band live.

I think they're terrible, just like every other neo-garage band.

i'm definatly getting a kick out of the white stripes, and the whole garage scene in general. i can see why people would hate it, but their missing out on some great music, and the first 'movement' in music in far too long.

Actually, "I'm Finding It Harder To Be A Gentleman" is their best song, IMO. And yes, they kick ass.

The Vines are OK, but I was disappointed by Highly Evolved. It's no big deal, though, as it only cost me $10.

Guest What?

I like "De Stijl" mainly for "Why Can't you be Nicer to Me?"

That song rules it.

I prefer The Hives over The Vines, but "Get Free" is a cool song.

i like the vines as well, but i've heard they are nothing special live. I'll chekc them out at the leeds fest in a few days~! I like the hives, strokes and white stripes, yet think all are overrated.

The Stripes are decent and they're easily the best group out of the Kinks/Garage Rock revivalist movement (a backhanded compliment if I ever saw one)...but I don't think they're quite the knockdown band that a lot of people build them as. There's more novelty (Siblings v. Marriage controversy, bizarre instrumentation) to keep them afloat once this movement runs out of steam, however.

And they definitely beat the Vines. No contest, really.

I also like the White Stripes. "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" is one of my current favourite songs.

But I CERTAINLY HOPE the are NOT brother and sister, because in the video for Ash's "Envy", they start, as I believe the Americans put it, "making out" in the back of a cab (driven by Andy Dick, BTW) I don't know if Ash are known in the US or what, but those who can check it out.

EDIT: And Meg White is ultra-hot. Just saying.

Yeah, I have friends who think Meg White is a babe, but I think they're more turned on by the fact of a girl in a rock band than if she was just some average woman walking down the street. Best thing I can say about her lookswise is she has tiggole bitties.

And I've heard of Ash. They're not very well known in the US outside of the college rock circuit, though.
