CMLL 8/17/2002 Workrate Report

[Hey. I've been doing these things, for, damn almost a year. There's a big archive of them right here with a lot of other stuff]

CMLL airs at the weird time of 4:30 this week. I hope they find a time and stick with it soon.

WHAT WORKED

Tarzan Boy meets up with the Japanese trio. I don’t know what anyone’s saying so I go by their pantomimes. Tarzan Boy makes the “hourglass” motion with his hands. Nosawa responds by making an “X” with his arms. Is he straight edge? Off to a Spike Lee film festival? Mazada indicates he will be punching someone. Tarzan Boy seems to indicate that he’s really tall. The tag seals the deal: “Tarzan Boy, hateful yet marvelous.”

Our opening match sees Porky, Lizmark Jr., & Mr. Niebla vs. Tarzan Boy, Mazada, & Nosawa, so there are surely comedy hijinks afoot. Rudos jump the tecnicos at the bell to start a rudo beatdown. Tarzan Boy slams Porky for the pin while his teammates slap a double-team submission on Niebla. Segunda caida sees the tecs regain the advantage and Porky runs through his comedy spots. The rudos are polite enough to line up for the Porky top rope splash to end the fall. Tercera caida has some good wrestling with a far too short Niebla/Tarzan Boy sequence. Moving right along, Niebla and Lizmark send the Japanese outside and hit stereo pescados. Tarzan Boy runs at Porky, and we all know no good can come of that. Then Sweet Baby Jesus, Porky actually pulls out a tope that flattens everyone. He manages (with much difficulty) to beat the count back into the ring and win the match. Too much Porky for my tastes, but this served its purpose and was fun enough to make it to the northern hemisphere.

I watched a Felino/Pantera match from IWRG yesterday that totally rocked, as they fearlessly took it to the mat in front of a small and subdued crowd. The Felino/Black Tiger match was basically the polar opposite, as the crowd was rabid and Felino (the big underdog) comes firing out of the gate with big moves. He gets the Majistral on Tiger, but the gang of Japanese distracts the ref and break up the pin. The continue stomping Felino on the outside and Olimpico uses his own body to shield Felino. This is so great. After some more hijinks the Japanese finally get the boot to the back and we get our match proper. Tiger hits a big powerbomb and Felino barely escapes the pin with his foot on the ropes. Tiger dropkicks Felino right in the face and hits his sit out Dominator (which I hereby dub the Tigerbite) but Felino manages to kick out. Tiger hits the ropes but Felino manages the dropkick/Majistral combo and scores the miracle pin as the place goes nuts for the upset. This worked. Oh yes.

Hey, more casting for Los Guapos. Shocker goes solo this week. The first contestant is Prof. Satan (I think). He takes off his mask, Shocker makes him put it back on. The next guy (Rob Rodriguez?) actually looks a lot like Shocker. The next guy is, I think, Baby Maria, but he’s got an “R” on his belt buckle so I’m likely wrong. Something Azteca is next, and it ain’t Sangre Azteca, unless he’s been hitting the weights. Our last contestant is American Ass (?), who has a Woodpecker on his crotch. Shocker ends the segment by dressing as a construction worker(?). Good nonsensical fun.

Main event was a Giant Silva match. Bad. He teams with Rayo de Jalisco. Very bad. But his other teammate is Shocker. Good. And they face Dr. Wagner, Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Buccanero, and Apollo Dantes. Good. So I guess it all evens out. Shocker rushes the ring to get at Ultimo and amazing doesn’t get jumped. Rayo and Silva take their sweet ass time getting to the ring. Bucky hops on Apollo’s back to match up to Silva. Apollo’s wearing pants again, thankfully. First few minutes of the match is Silva vs. rudos, with the GdI doing their usual superball bumping. Rayo comes in and outsmarts all the heels. Ugh. Send Silva back in. I love when Bucky screams out the name of whoever he’s fighting. Shocker comes in and has his usual good segment with everyone. Silva comes and clotheslines Wagner and Bucky to the floor (and kicks Wagner in the head on the way down). Rayo takes out Apollo and Shocker faltas Ultimo is retaliation for two weeks ago for the win. Not great, but entertaining enough.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK

We again see only the third caida of an Infernales/Villanos match, this one for the titles. Some good action here, with some close nearfalls to emphasize that the Villanos have the Infernales’ number. Satanico hits a powerbomb on III and goes for a pin with his feet on the ropes, but gets yanked outside by IV and V. Averno and Mephisto take them out with stereo somersault dives. III slaps an Abdominal Stretch on Satanico, who quickly uncles, but the ref’s was occupied with everyone on the floor. III thinks he’s one, but when the ref tells him otherwise, Satanico rolls him up for the win. I looked the booking, but this was just too short to say it really worked.

Felino is deep in thought about his match with Black Tiger. Olimpico comes by and consults. Did Olimpico look really small to anyone else? Like he’s been skipping on his IcoPro?

Stellar moments was pretty eh. When you have to show Rayo’s Romero Special from last week you know you’re reaching. I did like Rammstein and that other guy’s version of the Stage Dive, as well as Pantera’s super ‘rana on Zumbido.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Felino/Tiger was good. Opening and main event weren't great but entertaining enough. Still don't know why they cut the Villanos/Infernales feud up so much.
Guest razazteca
took you long enough to recognize CMLL :)
you forgot to mention the 2 sweet spots that Felino did outside of the ring......Springboard Senton? and Reverse Rana? Black Tiger is a selling god I tell you as the Reverse/Invert Rana was the best one I have ever seen.
And Zumbido had the best mullet in CMLL
