Guest nl5xsk1 Posted August 19, 2002 Report Posted August 19, 2002 All the hippie bands play long songs ... Phish played a version of Runaway Jim that lasted almost an hour and a version of David Bowie that was like 45 minutes . The Grateful Dead did songs that were 30+ minutes all the time.
Guest swan Posted August 19, 2002 Report Posted August 19, 2002 They take songs that are an average length and add a bunch of mindless jamming crap to it. Everything in this thread is a legit long song. Rush "2112"
Guest godthedog Posted August 19, 2002 Report Posted August 19, 2002 i don't know if this would count as a real song, but lou reed released an album called 'metal machine music', & it's all basically one track of reed making noise with studio equipment. if i remember correctly, the album goes on for over an hour. & on the original LP, on the final groove it just went in a circle instead of spiraling in, so it technically never ends.
Guest papacita Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 "Walk on By"-Issac Hayes. I've driven from one side of Phila. and back with the song playing through the entire ride.
Guest the 1inch punch Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 All Around the world by friggin Oasis goes on for thiretten unbearable minutes
Guest diavolina Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 Black No.1 by Type o Negative is 11:15 ....thats the only one i can come up with at the moment.
Guest Kinetic Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 I detest excessively long songs. The only songs I've ever heard that justify 10+ minutes are "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" and "Desolation Row," both of which are by Bob Dylan. I'd say "Cowgirl in the Sand" from Neil Young's Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, but I could probably live without a few of those minutes.
Guest godthedog Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 dylan is the king of keeping a long track interesting. hendrix is another one i love, for his 2 epic songs on 'electric ladyland'. 'sister ray' by the velvets has a GREAT beginning, but it seems like they were too wrapped up in the idea of the song to worry about making the song better. they could've done a couple more takes, or edited that first one down by about seven minutes. then, of course, you've got the most long-winded of all bands, the pixies. jesus, those songs seemed to just go on forever.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 Black No.1 by Type o Negative is 11:15 ....thats the only one i can come up with at the moment. Type O has a TON of long songs. Slow Deep and Hard especially. Pretty far cry from Steele's old band, Carnivore, which was pretty much nazi shit and a song called Jack Daniels and Pizza.
Guest NoCalMike Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 Indagaddadavidda by Iron Butterfly Any symphony by Beethoven or Mozart oh and that song we all learned in elementary school, "This is the song that never ends......"
Guest converge241 Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 how about shortest? momo- SOD you suffer - napalm death
Guest nl5xsk1 Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 how about shortest? All and No, All! by the Descendents ... each is about one second long.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 how about shortest? momo- SOD you suffer - napalm death I was in a band that covered momo, just for shits. We did an absurdly long count off to lead into it as well, with slow cymbal crashes on the counts.. 1..............2................3.....................4...................momo. On average, I don't think any band has shorter songs than Nasum. Their average song is about 20 odd seconds. Although anal cunt and gorguts make strong cases as well.
Guest converge241 Posted August 22, 2002 Report Posted August 22, 2002 Anal Cunt!!! i still can never get over i saw them in a godamn arena when Phil brought them out on the Pantera/Zombie/Deftones.. weird being in a crowd of 16,000 and everyone has the WTF look from not knowing who they are/whats going on
Guest AndrewTS Posted August 24, 2002 Report Posted August 24, 2002 "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" -- Iron Maiden. Maiden rules. "2112" by Rush--if you count all the various movements as one song. There is a cut down version though, as well. Lots of Led Zeppelin: I don't actually own one of their CDs but my sister does. Maybe not a more overrated band on the planet. Problem is their good stuff is ruined by the fact that they have some really shitty songs. "Whole Lotta Love" is annoying and pretty fucking retarded--it sounds like a 60's version of a Limp Bizkit song. They made a longer version? AAAAAUGH! Dream Theater-- lots of long-ass songs. Pretentious but likeable band. "Fire Garden Suite" --Steve Vai. Kick-ass guitar virtuoso, but mostly just instrumental. "Black Sabbath" -- by...duh...BLACK SABBATH! It's no so much a song as a horror movie scene brought to life. When I heard this as a younger kid it freaked the shit out of me. "Oh, God!! Please God help me!!" -- Ozzy
Guest redbaron51 Posted August 25, 2002 Report Posted August 25, 2002 i remember seein Yes and they did Starship Trooper and it was over 40 minutes in length
Guest BionicRedneck Posted August 25, 2002 Report Posted August 25, 2002 The Outlaw Torn by Metallica is about 10 minutes on the Load. Apparantly its actually longer but they had to cut it to fit it on the CD. Three Days by Jane's Addiction is about 11 mins.
Guest Sebastian_the_Bastard Posted August 26, 2002 Report Posted August 26, 2002 "You Always Say Goodnight, Goodnight" by the Juliana Theory is like 9:35 or so.
