Guest Shaved Bear Posted August 20, 2002 Report Posted August 20, 2002 Dave Matthews Band: Fake band meant for Abercrombie tools That quote was from Shaved Bear (I still have no clue as to how to make it say who you're quoting above the quote), and while I'm usually a huge fan of his posts here, I find that assertion to be quite unfounded. I can understand and respect people's opinions of any band, love or hate (and some of you really, really hate these guys), but the above statement just really irked me, and I'm not easily irked. I can see how they are marketed TOWARDS that crowd, but to say that they are flat-out fake, implying that they were created solely to make money off of preppie putzes, is quite preposterous, IMO. I personally do not know Dave Matthews or anyone associated with his band, but being a long-time fan, having been to two concerts, I have to believe that they are a group of genuinely talented (IMO) individuals who came together to make great (IMO) music. Their line-up has remained constant since before they were signed to a major label, and (with the possible exception of the album Everyday) their music has always remained true to its roots, instead of pandering for radio airplay. And even Everyday wasn't so much "selling out" as it was "tweaking their style to be more accessible for 1 album at the label's behest, since their planned album (the one just released) wasn't coming along as quickly as they'd hoped". Okay, off the soapbox now, just felt that had to be said. I said that because...all of the people I know that like them (like 30 kids) all wear Abercrombie and the and all seem to think that h is artsy, I made a generalization, sorry

Guest JaKyL25 Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 I said that because...all of the people I know that like them (like 30 kids) all wear Abercrombie and the and all seem to think that h is artsy, I made a generalization, sorry Wow, that quoting thing seems to work! Thanks SomeGuy! Learn something new everyday. As far as what Shaved Bear says, I do completely agree that the ratio of "trendy" people to other people that like DMB is quite high. I for one have never bought clothes at Abercrombie (Or anywhere in a mall, for that matter), but I definitely see what you're saying. I think it has to do with the way they're marketed or something. As far as he being "artsy", that's quite the silly adjective for them to use, since isn't pretty much every musician in some way being artsy? Damn kids!

Guest Incandenza Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 Ryan Adams: What the hell happened to this guy? he just kind of disappeared Are you thinking of Canadian rocker Bryan Adams? Alt-country guy Ryan (minus 'B') Adams is someone different.
Guest justsoyouknow Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 No, I'm thinking of the guy who sang "New York, New York"....has he even released another single? I enjoyed his music, damnit.
Guest Incandenza Posted August 21, 2002 Report Posted August 21, 2002 He's still very much around. He's releasing another album next month, and I'm looking forward to it. As for the single question, the follow up was "Answering Bell," which, in my opinion, is better than "New York, New York," but didn't benefit from the latter's timeliness.
