Iv'e tried in a very subtle manner to recommend or simply mention some different bands in this folder but I don't think anybody has noticed.

well, there is such a thing as being too subtle.

as for U2, the third world charity stuff is probably the closest thing to a good point about them. What the hell do they/did they have as a band, ever? Oh yeah i forgot the edge is cool. ahem.

I don't know kyuss, but otherwise it seems okay. I liked that song "Ich Bin Ein Auslander," back in the day.

::throws on the ol' Defend U2 gauntlets, as always::

The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby come to mind. I consider these two of the absolute best rock albums of the last two decades...and ever, really. I don't know of a better band that just actually plays together than U2. They're all doing what they want to do in the band, and I think you'd be hard-pressed to actually find a more cohesive group of musicians who play off of each other and complent each other so well.

I'm talking about jamming live or having big 4 minute guitar solos. That's not what U2 is. They write songs. I believe they've got two masterpieces in Achtung and Joshua Tree, and some very close efforts in Zooropa, War, and Pop.

If you need some songs, here you go.

"I Will Follow," "Gloria," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "New Year's Day," "40," "Bad," "Pride (In The Name Of Love)," "The Unforgettable Fire," "With Or Without You," "Where The Streets Have No Name," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "Bullet The Blue Sky," "All I Want Is You," "One," "Mysterious Ways," "The Fly," "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)," "Discotheque," "Please," "Elevation," "Walk On"...

And that's only culling from singles. 20 songs of theirs, off the top of my had, that are absolutely wonderful. Any other track from Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby could have slid onto that list, no problem. I honestly don't know of any mainstream band since the Beatles that has had so much success and tried so many different musical approaches...and succeeded, to boot. I won't deny that they peaked in the late 80's/early 90's, or even deny that the latest album is their least exploratory work, but man, I'll defend to the death the fact that these guys are legendary and still put on one of the best rock shows around.

You don't have to like their politics, and one thing you'll definitely find among U2 fans is a whole lot of eye-rolling at Bono's ridiculousness. He makes some idiot speeches in the midst of the songs on Rattle and Hum, and he always manages to say the wrong thing in public. Pretentious, sure, but he knows it, and although there's a certain ridiculousness to a rock star trying to save the world, Bono HAS gotten world issues more exposure than they would have gotten without his involvement. I still personally think his politics are bit silly, but to discount the whole band because of that's like saying, say, that Metallica sucks solely because James Hetfield is an asshole.

You don't have to like the band, but to say they've had little impact or lack talent is a bit ignorant.

And yes. The Edge is really frickin' cool.

What the fuck? Why is everyone decided that I'm "being schooled" when I haven't even gotten a chance to fucking defend myself? Would you back off some and just let a brotha be?

I like what I like. What I like has good lyrics (don't bother wasting your time flaming... listen to Hoss by Lagwagon and THEN try flaming).

What I like has good music behind the lyrics. Listen to Something Corporate or Taking Back Sunday and try to disagree.

What I like is what I fucking like... so just back off.

Long story short, the kid tries to pick a fight with me, but I just laugh him off and walk up to the stage to sing along to the chorus of "Chop Suey!"

HA HA!!

Something similiar happened once at a punk show I went to. My friends band, Bad Taste, and his friends band, Stalin's War (the latter being the best Garage Punk band I've ever heard) were headlining, and this stupid kid wearing baggier-than-shit jeans, a Blink-182 shirt, a huge chain wallet that went down to his shin and an Atticus hat (worn backwards, with the edge over the eyebrows...cuz that's how all punks wear THEIR hats! *sigh*), carrying a completely smooth Chad Muska board walks in and starts acting like he owns the place. He tries to start a mosh pit, but he fails...how the shit does one FAIL at starting a mosh-pit?!...then he just starts jumping up and down...

Finally, this one punk starts a mosh pit and the kid gets brought down while jumping, so he gets up and rushes the guy who started it...and the kid just stops before reaching him. He then starts saying random things like "What's you're problem mothafucka?! You wanna test me?!" and the punk just slaps him and walks away, laughing.

Great stuff.

and although I don't like most metal, I do like many of Slayer's and HIM's songs. Course, I dont know if they're still metal or not...

Rollins is another guy I hate, but I might download it anyway. I actually saw him do a spoken word performance in late '98 or so (one of my first dates with my ex gf). And it was pretty entertaining, though not nearly as good as Rollins or his fans think he is. Also, I'm of the opinion that Black Flag went steadily down hill as Rollins' influence in the band rose.

Well, I love his spoken stuff, as it is endlessly entertaining, but I have never liked Black Flag or the Rollins Band. I don't like pre-Rollins Flag either. Just not something I really get into.

I'm hurt that you think I have shitty taste in music. Is it the "Weezer is overrated" comments?

Actually, I can't think of anything you like at the moment, so I dunno if you have shitty taste or not. List some stuff you listen to and I'll get back to you. Heh. As for Weezer, they are overrated, but I still love Pinkerton above all but 6 or 7 albums ever made.

Just kidding. I don't really care.

A likely story.

Or do I?

Of course you do; everyone cares about me and the things I say. Didn't you get that memo?

As far as U2 goes...they were my "bridge" band from my metalhead days into my current musical tastes, so I'll always have a soft spot for them. They were good up until 1993; after Achtung Baby, it all sucked.

Carry on.

I think Pop is very underrated- it has great songs like Discoteque, Velvet Dress and God Will Send His Angels.

ATYCLB is awesome- I love each and every song and New York is my all time favourite.

I haven't heard enough of Zooropa to comment but Stay (faraway, so close) kicks ass

I'll give you guys some material to work with...

I like NSYNC. And O-Town. Britney. Backstreet Boys. In fact, I like most top 40 songs and/or groups. I've seen the majority of these acts live.

I'm also a huge Stabbing Westward fan. I love 311. I like KISS, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi. I like quite a few "hair bands", and probably have every 80's one hit wonder on a CD somewhere, from Falco to Rockwell to Big Country.

And I don't think anyone, except for maybe Kotzenjunge, would be into freestyle music. I'm not talking Eminem underground raps, or rap "disses"...I'm talking euro-dance, techno-ish, dance beats, like Alexia, Sweet TB or Elissa, or old school freestyle like Stevie B., Collage or Denine.

Count me in with the Avril marks.

The way I see it, to each his own. Some people are more well-rounded than others, and there is no "bad" musical taste. You like country, then line-dance your ass off. If death metal is your thing, then bust some heads at a concert. I wouldn't base my opinions of a person solely on whether or not they turn the radio off when Nelly comes on.

Oh, yeah...I like him too

:D

Meh...

I like some of U2's stuff....they're not my favorite band, by any means, bu The Joshua Tree remains in five CD changer.

But I prefer The Rolling Stones...completely different music, I know...but still

Zooropa is pretty much like October, ok but not of enough consequence to make any difference. Stay is a great song, as is Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car. The rest of the stuff falls in between embarassing and decent. Not their best album by any means. This was the first album of theirs that I bought.

Bob, check out Passengers Volume one, if you haven't already. It has a few good songs, but Larry Mullen has said that he found it to be "self-indulgent"- and he played on nearly all the songs.

I love Zooropa, and find the title track and "The First Time" (despite the bad mix) to be two of U2's best songs, period. Solid, if strange album. The Johnny Cash bit at the end is odd, though.

And yes, DEFINITELY pick up Passengers: Original Soundtracks Volume 1 if you can, Bob. "Your Blue Room" may be better than anything they've put out in the 90's, and that's saying a lot. An absolutely excellent album, experimental, with the weird soundscapes of Brian Eno really coming into play. Definitely self-indulgent, but a really, really great side project.

Though I don't know if you can really consider it a side project if it's just U2 and their main producer making music together, but hey, good enough for me.

Ok I actually meant I can't stand people that ONLY listen to Top 40. What pisses me off is that rock stations play like the top 10 popular songs from each year since 1985, OVER AND OVER AND OVER....so In essence, you get 3-4 new bands added each year into the ENDLESS looping of the SAME OLD SONGS....not to say all the songs are bad, but I want to be able to listen to something different for a change. Same goes for all the genres on the radio.....no problem with listening to Top 40, but if that is ALL you listen to, you are just lazy

Favorite bands I can think of at the moment:

Pixies, Clinic, Radiohead, Bad Religion, Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Pere Ubu, Shellac, Pavement. And I do like Black Flag up until and including Damaged , but they're not really one of my favorite bands anymore.

Please tell me you like me. Please please please.

Let's see here...I hate the Pixies, dunno much about Clinic, tolerate Radiohead, love Bad Religion, indifferent towards GBV, think Sebadoh (and Sentridoh) is ok, dislike Fugazi, dislike Sonic Youth, heard Pere Ubu in years so I don't remember enough to say snything else, dunno much about Shellac, and hate Pavement. So...yeah.

Add some Cure, New Order, Therapy?, PJ Harvey, Cohen, Marvin Gaye, The Smiths, and Neil Young to that, and you might be ok.

:)

That is all.

I have a friend...yes I have those...lol....and he ONLY listens to TOP 40 Rap/R&B...I dont think he has bad music taste...I just think he's shallow.

Wouldnt you feel ripped off if you bought CD's like Ja Rule, Eminem, DMX, etc...and only listened to the Radio songs and nothing else no matter what?

For example I happen to enjoy Ludacris's last album almost all the way through and he only know the songs from the radio...I'll be listening to a song from that album that HE owns and he doesnt know who it is right away...it's just sad that people have no broadening in their lives that's all.

damn..whats with all the negativity?

oh i know! its most likely because its much easier for you all to sit behind your monitors and flame people you've never even met, that way you don't have to worry about getting your face stomped into some asphalt.

OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES! EVERYONE HAS ONE, AND EVERYONE'S STINKS!

in case you haven't noticed...not everyone likes the same shit....so maybe its time to grow up and accept that, and play nicely.

oh..and i'll save everyone the trouble and just call myself a bitch and admit that i have a slight attitude problem.

Diavolina: I haven't seen any flaming in here. So I don't know what you're talking about. And thanks for saving me the trouble. :)

Cerebus: I like some of those bands you listed, and the others are tolerable. I dunno if I'll ever find myself listening to Marvin Gaye though, but I can understand if someone views that as an indictment of my taste. I can understand the dislike for Fugazi and Sonic Youth. I can even understand the indifference toward GBV. And Pavement I can forgive.

But you hate the Pixies?!? If your gonna tell a joke like that with a straight face, you have to give us some sort of indication that you're kidding. Otherwise, you, my good sir, are now persona non grata in my mind.
