Bob Rock to play bass for Metallica

I just heard on the radio that Metallica will go ahead with a new album and that their producer Bob Rock will play bass. What the hell??? Can he even play bass?

I knew Metallica was dragging their feet about getting a new bass player but I'm still surprised they went with Rock. They played a few shows with him earlier this year so it must have worked out well.

They are the "metal" version of the Rolling Stones. They had a 10 year time span give or take in which they were great at the beginning of their career and then just stayed around way too long past their good years.

I know back in the day when I was a mullet wearing metal kid I was pretty upset about Bob Rock replacing that Swedish guy as their producer because he had produced Dr. Feelgood and Bon Jovi and shit like that.

James playing bass would be BAAAAAAAAAAAD...why? Because he's among the great rhythm GUITARISTS of all-time. Regardless if whether he played the bass Lemmy-style or not, it wouldn't be the same, especially when they play anything pre-...And Justice For All, as the basslines were pretty much standing-out in each song.

 

Bob Rock is the worst producer EVER. He over-mixes songs so that they get a glossed-over feeling whenever you listen to them, and doesn't understand that partially what made the first 4 Metallica albums so incredibly great was their raw-ness in an era of over-produced music.

Ermmm, how many "oh noooooo's" from Metallica is it gonna take before people just give up on their shitty selves. Oh and someone said Hetfied was a great guitarist, bwahahaha.....Hetfield is overrated as hell. He was good when he was thrash, when he yelled and screamed, he can't sing worth a damn and everyone knows it. Metallica should just pack it up, and hope that people forget about the last 10 years.

NoCalMike, Hetfield is actually a great singer, although his current voice fits a more mellow, blues-y/country style of music, hence the riff-heavy and blues-influenced Load and ReLoad. Overrated guitarist? Perhaps...but then again, he also wrote "Orion," "To Live Is To Die"'s guitar parts, and "Call Of Ktulu." Yep...overrated alright by making great music...

He may sound great on the CD, which I won't deny, but when he doing live vocals it is not nearly as good sounding. I was just disputing that though....As far as his writing capabilities, they are just fine. I just think Metallica is over though....

Orion and ktulu are easy as hell though. Never heard the other song you mentioned. Metallica should've just released Anasthesia as a single and quit. Anymore, I just revel in listening to longtime fans lament about the good ol' days and totally admit how they've gone to shit.

 

As far as Hetfield's vocals, well, this is my opinon and all, but that is the number one reason why I absolutely cannot stand that band. Hence Anasthesia is the only Metallica song i don't hate. More because I respect Cliff Burton than anything. he should've gone with Mustaine...that would've been amazing. Although it would've been a sad time when Mustaine kicked out everyone who wasn't named Dave a while back.. That had to have been his basis in making THAT decision.

Who cares if they're easy as hell? They're still GREAT songs. That's like saying "The Ramones sucked because they're music was too easy." You seem to forget that one of the major rules of being a good guitarist is being able to write good songs, not just be technically great (hence why I hate Jimmy Paige).

anywho, James is an amazing rythem player, just like Mustaine who both changed the way the guitar is played, hence thrash metal came in.

 

I'll admit that James is bland and I like Mustaine better, but best metal vocalist is Dickinson

Does Bob Rock overproduce stuff? Usually.

 

Is he the worst producer of all time?

 

Well, that would all depend on what your goal is when you go into the studio.

 

If your goal is to put of a 'raw' album that will essentially preach to the choir, and not make you any money, then yeah, Bob Rock is a pretty bad choice.

 

Bob Rock is, however, a hitmaker. That being why people record albums. Like it or not, *all* musicians are in it for the money. First and foremost. The secondary concerns may be art, integrity, banging hot chicks on tour and 'being true to the fans'. But those are secondary concerns.

 

You make an album so it will sell. And going to Bob Rock ups the odds of it selling into the stratosphere a hundredfold.

 

In that respect, you would have to call him one of the best producers of all time. You may not like the finished product, but lots of other people do, and they shell out the money to buy it. And that is what the band wants. Maybe they lose you as a fan, but they pick up a hundred others when you stop liking them.

Slayer is responsible for putting Thrash Metal into high octane. Yet somehow Metallica gets the credit. I will deny that Metallica had their role in the genre, but overall I would say Slayer has influcenced a lot more bands. Kerry King is on par if not better than Kirk Hammet.

if Kerry King was not so one dimensional as a guitar player then he would be on par with Hammett.

 

I'd still say Megadeth and Metallica started thrash metal before slayer
