Guest ISportsFan Report post Posted August 22, 2002 Corey Baird of Bedford, N.S. - Torch Newsletter subscriber (5.5): As a Canadian, this was my first opportunity to order and NWA-TNA event. To say I was underwhelmed would be an understatement. From the reports I've read most of the other shows featured less wrestling and more bad skits. Well, save for Amazing Red and Lo Ki, the wrestling didn't do much for me on this show. I place a lot of the blame on Mike Tenay and Don West. Now I'd heard the latter was awful, but what's Mike Tenay's excuse? It's like they were trying to out-scream each other. Tenay should have learned from his WCW days that pimping every single move as the best thing ever actually accomplishes nothing. Instead, it provoked apathy in my living room. As for West, my ears are still bleeding from his nonsense. His unintentionally bad lines had us in stitches, though. On Slash, "It's like he materialized from the depths of the ground!" And I'm pretty sure I haven't heard the word discombobulated used on a wrestling broadcast since Dusty Rhodes's heyday. I felt sorry for the audio guys who were obviously trying to compensate all night for the 100 decibel wonders. As for the rest of the broadcast, let's say I doubt the promotion has the time to fix everything that's broken. NWA-TNA should do a better job telling fans about its talent, either through video recaps or the announcing team. I know they can't spend too much time rehashing things, but they really should take into account first-time viewers. Then just when my friends and I figured out who the faces and heels were that sorry Brian Lawler cluster screwed everything up. When will people realize Vinny Ru is no genius. I hate to be so negative, but after watching this crap I have a whole new appreciation for WWE. There's a reason most of the talent isn't working for the McMahons, although I was very impressed by Amazing Red, Low Ki, and Ron Killings. Sonny Siaki has potential, as does A.J. Styles. From the brilliance that is pwtorch.com. Jason
Guest takapac Report post Posted August 22, 2002 The above-mentioned fan routinely gives Raws and Smackdowns 9s and 10s out of 10 at PWTorch. *shrugs* Still, his post motivated me enough - as another Canadian first-time viewer - to write in and say that I was amazed by how superior the wrestling is on NWA/TNA to that on the WWE's shows. Taken as wholes, they're not even in the same room.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted August 22, 2002 marks are marks... I like WWE as much as the next guy...but I certainly am impressed by guys who get far less money who go out there and bust ass no matter how much talent they have. And TNA has some talent too...as evidenced by the X guys. I'll take hard work over HHH promos. It's the Dupp stuff that I can't stand...and this week had none of that. Just wrestlers busting ass...whether it be Styles and Lynn going all out for over 30 minutes...or Harris and Storm busting ass to try and give people their moneys worth. Hard work is always a good thing.
Guest eirejmcmahon Report post Posted August 22, 2002 You really do have to appreciate how hard some of the guys work - especially those poor sods Lynn and Styles who pulled three matches and then had to go on for a three way ladder match later in the night! If nothing else, some of the NWATNA roster is making good use of their chance to display their abilities to a larger audience than they'd be used to. Marks are indeed marks, but that swings both ways.

Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted August 22, 2002 I stopped taking Keith's match ratings seriously when he have TLC2 a full *****, and refused to give anything Helms and Chavo did in WCW any more than ***1/2.

Reading it, I realized something I had always known, but his review confirmed it: Keith is maybe the biggest WWE mark on the planet. Really. Sure, he criticizes them pretty strongly, sometimes to my amusement. But outside of the WWE.....he pretty much hates everything (unless it's Canadian, i.e. Stampede Wrestling). Check out his reviews - trashes WCW, trashes ECW, dislikes lucha and puro heavyweights in general. Trashes the indies. As much as he may bitch about 1/2 hr long Trips promos, THAT is what he loves. Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted August 24, 2002 I didn't realize he did a rant on the Lo Ki/Styles/Lynn 3 way. The 10th show is the only one he has done to my knowledge. Can someone post his review of that match?
