Yeah really, whats the deal? Who are they congratulation? The guy who works the film reel, the usher, the chick who sells the popcorn? Pretty weak if you ask me. By the way converge, what movies did you see when this happened?

That happened the first time I saw Boogie Nights, all the way back in October of '97. I didn't cheer myself, but I could understand why those that did, did.

Not so much standing up, but applauding after a movie has been a wierd trend in the last couple of years. I don't understand it, but it's ok.

"monsters Inc" - mostly kids so i can let that one slide

"pearl harbor"

"jay and silent bob strike back"

"men in black II"

now when i see a new kevin smith or taratino, i feel real great and amped but i wouldnt do it

when i saw saving private ryan i felt moved to show my appreciation but i didnt do it then either

you know how i showed it? I TOLD PEOPLE IT WAS GREAT!! and to go see it.. i didnt wait for an encore or curtain call from the projection booth guy or the guy who sold me popcorn who spoke no english or the dude next to me who talked through the thing

another pet peeve @ the movies

babies/toddlers in the movie.. i dont think a 4 year old should be at "the cell" or a six month old baby at "nutty Professor II". hello? its called a babysitter! and why does the theater let them in?? i try to hit a movie once a week and without fail once a month there is some crying baby!!

if you are alone AND its for dirty work that is completley OK. our dirty work showing had 4 people..one looked homeless and was sleeping though. I saw "Four Rooms" by myself in the theater.. btw is "screwed" any good? i love DW but have heard bad things about screwed?

I think its cause people have seen so many crappy movies that when they see a halfway decent movie, they feel like they have seen something worthy of clapping. BUT. I've yet to be in a movie where people clapped, mostly cause everyone usually is up and out before the first word of the credits is up.

I have seen people throw stuff at the screen though for bad movies.

Anyone who would applaud Pearl Harbor or Men In Black II should have their fucking hands cut off.

When I worked at a theater there was clapping for "My Best Friend's Wedding." -- gag.

I agree. If that isn't a sign of the impending apocalypse, I don't know what is.

Maybe they were clapping because it was over.

Hell, in Pearl Harbor I was cheering on the Axis...

You know that if people give a Men In Black movie a standing ovation, it's the trendy thing to do.

I do not think I have ever seen that happen before, at least not in years. The alst movie I saw that had any kind of reaction was Battlefield: Earth, but that reaction was more the "That movie sucked." "Don't they screen these things?" "Worst movie ever." kind of reaction.

I've never had that happen to me, at a good movie or a bad one.

GODDAMNIT!!!!

So, I finalyy get a chance to see Signs..

AND THERE ARE 2 BABIES IN THE THEATER!!!

one of em looked like 4 months old and cried through the whole thing.. I even told an usher but nothing happened.. the parent looked about 14 and had a 14 year old friend with her, after signs was over they snuck into martin lawrence's movie..my wife told the mother she was a "fucking cunt", which was a small vindication.

i have seen this happen as well. I have never partaken of this new act but i believe it comes from the tradition from the old drive in theatre's. After the flick ended you would honk the horn and crap if you liked the movie.

I gave Episode II a THUNDEROUS ovation, even chanting "ECW! ECW!" for some reason... anyways, that was the only time I've seen that happen, but I was in the theater for the midnight showing with the rest of the supernerds like myself, so that explains it.

This pisses me off to no end.

When I went to see Spider-Man, there was a mother with like 4 little kids, none of them older than 8, sitting right next to us. Their constant bantering and annoyances were irritating as it was, but then the movie started. EVERY TIME Peter Parker was on the screen one of them, I dont know which one (it may have been more than one of them actually) would say, "That's Spider-man!" loudly. Then in the movie's final scenes when Spidey and the Green Goblin were fighting, the kid was acting really scared and nervous, as if he were in a haunted house and hadn't been scared yet, but was anticipating thr scare in a horrible manner. My point is, the movie was rated freaking PG-13. Now I know Spider-Man is a very kid-friendly product, but dammit DON'T BRING YOUR FREAKING BASTARD 4-YEAR OLDS TO SEE A FUCKING PG-13 MOVIE!

I know I've come across it a few times, the five times I can remember happened at the local filmfestival. The first time was in 1997 after a demented Hong Kong action movie called The Big Heat, which got a standing ovation.

The next time was in 1999 I believe, when the festival held an all night special with four Hong Kong action movies. They were Big Bullet, Once a Cop, Full Alert and Enter the Eagles. Applause for all of them transpired.

i think Star Wars is okay, because i know you people are nuts :) . I dont hate star wars, i just never got into it, but i totally understand the fascination...ECW? WTF?

a film festival is allright , usually the filmakers are in attendance at those things.

In general I should say i can understand it more if its a certain genre that has a following or whatever (Hong Kong action movies festival, Star Wars, Lord Of The Ring, View Askew) but Pearl Harbor? I dont think there was a Bruckheimer convention in town :)
