Guest Steve J. Rogers Report post Posted August 22, 2002 Perfect example. I went to see the indie movie "The Good Girl" with Jen (Rachel from Friends) Aniston in it the other night. It was in NYC so maybe thats why but all during the movie it seemed there was a group of people laughing so uncontrollably loud during the whole thing you would have thought they were watching the latest Austin Powers movie Now don't get me wrong its a good flick and it was funny, darkly and ironicly funny, in other words nothing that would elict more than a light hearted chuckle (well the ONLY scene where I went gap-mouthed and almost laughed out loud was when a guy, just after having sex is outside with nothing on but a blanket that gets snatched off by his dog but that was it) My guess is that the setting was in a very rual part of Texas and the characters were all various kinds of patheic forms of white trash and maybe this crowd was laughing AT the characters more so than what was on film. Perfect example, the boy Jen's character has a tryst with writes him a note saying meet me in the parking lot of the Chuck E Cheese, that line had the crowd DYING LAUGHING but come on, how is that different than a New Yorker saying "Meet me in the parking lot of the McDonalds" or TGI Fridays to use another local kiddie style restaurant chain in other words, IT WASN'T MEANT TO BE FUNNY! I swear crowds like that drive people to rentals Steve

Guest jimmy no nose Report post Posted August 22, 2002 I assumed you were talking about people laughing at what are supposed to be serious scenes. I sometimes do that when they are poorly acted or overacted and get weird looks from people.

I sometimes do that when they are poorly acted or overacted and get weird looks from people. Not really, the scenes were funny just seemed they were laughing AT the trailer park trash nature of the film. I agree with you though somewhat, if a scene is SO unbelieveably horrid in terms of acting you have no other choice but to snicker, but to bawl out laughing? Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted August 22, 2002 I went and saw Spiderman opening night with a couple of friends And all through the movie people would giggle over the stupidest shit...stuff that was no way intended to be funny. I think a group of asshole potheads near where I was sitting started the whole thing and it just spread through to everyone.

I wouldn't say I bawl out laughing, just a light laugh. People close by seem to get kind of mad.

I think a group of asshole potheads near where I was sitting started the whole thing and it just spread through to everyone. The same thing happened when I went to watch Spider-Man. I also don't get why people laugh at the stuff they already see in the commercials. It really pisses me off.
Guest Ripper Report post Posted August 23, 2002 I saw the Austin Powers movie and this guy must have found Mike Myers himself funny because anytime any of his characters said ANYTHING he laughed. I mean like if a character said "Hi" dude was rolling. HE LAUGHED AT EVERYTHING. At jokes, regular dialouge, EVERYTHING!!
Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted August 23, 2002 This probably really doesn't belong here, but since it involves COMPLETELY inappropriate audience laughter, I'll post it. The theater dept. at the college I go to (World-Famous Siena Heights University! Ask us about our Simpsons class!) recently did a production of the play A Lie of the Mind. I had never heard of this play before, and I doubt many of you have either, but nevertheless let me tell you that it's a pretty damn tragic play. I mean, my friends and I were all deeply touched by it. But here's the thing--Seemingly the entire audience besides me and my maybe 5 or 6 friends would LAUGH at everything. They didn't fucking care! Damn asshole ignorant college kids! I don't usually wish harm on anyone, but dammit, these people need to either give a good explanation for their laughter or else be forced to at least see the play for what it truly is. The people I know that were actually involved in the production confirmed that my friends and I were right, and were MIGHTILY pissed at the general public for making such a mockery of their fine performance merely because their simple minds couldn't comprehend what was actually happening on stage. Guest J*ingus Report post Posted August 23, 2002 I've seen the same thing happen with any number of Shakespeare productions. If it's too different from their normal lives, audience members laugh as a defense mechanism.
Guest DARRYLXWF Report post Posted August 23, 2002 When Bambi was re-released here in Australia, I being the asshole I am, went to see it JUST so I could piss people off by laughing out loud when Bambi's mother died.
Guest bigsheep_305 Report post Posted August 24, 2002 Being an actor myself, I can tell you that ebing on stage and having someone laugh uproariously at something that ISN'T supposed ot be funny can be HIGHLY annoying. I was in a show one time, where this little boy has been practically dragged off to the Civil War, and he finally returns, limping, bloddy, dirty, half dead. And it's really a very touching part of the play. Well, evey night, there was at least one person(usually more, and usually teens) who would BURST out laughing when this happened. I wanted to shake them and go :WHAT ABOUT THIS IS FUNNY TO YOU IDIOTS!!! So that kind of hting,e ven in a movie theatre has ALWAYS upset me...
Guest JaKyL25 Report post Posted August 24, 2002 bigsheep_305, just by reading one post of yours I can tell that I like you already because: 1.) You agree with me 2.) You're using my original avatar. Arthur rules! Yeah, the scenario you described about idiots laughing at the kid in the play is more or less a direct parallel to the situation I was describing. People are so insensitive/unwilling to suspend their disbelief and actually GET INTO a play these days. Sad.
