VH 1...

Recommended Posts

Guest Youth N Asia

Alright...I DO NOT watch VH 1 with any regularness...but it seems like every time I flip past it there's an MTV show from a couple of years ago on...

What's the deal? I hate MTV as it is...now I have 3 channels of it

I can't remember the last time I actually happened to catch MUSIC VIDEOS on VH1, while at least MTV pretends to care about them for an hour a day with TRL, and then also subjugates them to late-night.

MTV2 is cool though, no complaints there.

Yep, I've noticed it too. First time that happened to me I thought Time Warner had played around w/ my channel lineup again...

Whoa, I was JUST thinking about this. I used to like VH1. Good Behind The Musics, retro artist specials, top 100 lists and other good wholesome un-MTV pop programming. But lately it's been like all Real World and MTV shows!? I mean what's up? I know MTV own VH1 but what's the point of making it another MTV?

They did re-run that special with Jon Stewart, Denis Leary, Janeane Garafolo, and Chris Katan making fun of all those lame videos. While I disagree with the whole premise behind the show--why put shitty videos into regular rotation when you know they're shitty and will quite willingly lambaste them years later--it's still a really hilarious show.

Isn't VH1 owned by the same company that owns MTV?

MTV2 isn't all that great anymore either. They play the same videos as MTV. Every now and then one their "special blocks" will have good different stuff but it has turned too much into MTVlite.

MuchMusic is about the only decent music video channel left. 24 hours of videos or shows about music that usually mixes in more variety then MTV and MTV2

Don't forget MTV-X! ;)

VH1 is indeed owned by Viacom, as is MTV. I don't get VH1 in my area after 4PM, so I almost never watch it, and it's disheartening to hear this news. I remember them playing lots of videos and the awesome "Behind the Music" series. I always thought of them as "MTV for Yuppies" because they played Top 40, but older Top 40 artists like Sting and RHCP, who aren't necessarily "hip with the kids" anymore.

Well MTVX doesn't currently exist. It was replaced by MTVjamz. Yes just what MTV needs...a channel for rap and r&b .

But i still think this is more a case of MTV trying out different types of spin off channels then a case of MTV tossing MTVx in the trash. So i'm hoping that MTVx does return at some point.

MuchMusic has a new channel that is like MTVx called Loud or something, but infortunaly i think it's only available in Canada.

MuchMusic has MuchLoud and MuchVibe, which is geared towards Rock/Metal/Alternative and Hip-Hop/R&B/Soul, respectively. Edge102 has EdgeTV, which is whatever the hell "new rock" is.

Unfortunately, all of these are digital pay stations, so if you don't have sattelits or digital cable, you're SOL.

Oh, there's also an MTV Canada digital pay station. However, that's been regulated so it can only play like 2 hours of music videos or something like that.

And you can't forget MuchMoreMusic, which is the Adult Contemporary version of Much.

That's it, I'm moving back to Canada...

Isn't there The Box down in the states too? I remember seeing that channel down there a few years ago.

I hate how Viacom is affecting MuchMusic. MuchMusic doesn't need to air Becoming(Absolutely Hate That Show), The VMAs, That SI Swimsuit Special and other stuff that should be seen on MTV Canada rather than Much. Then, MuchMusic could focus on stuff like Ed The Sock, Amanda Walsh and other important stuff.

I've heard of The Box but i've never seen it and i don't know what i'd have to do to see it. It may not even still be around.

They're rerunning that? Cool, I loved that show. The best part being when Vanilla Ice came in (dressed in full Fred Durst Wannabe mode) and went psycho, smashing stuff with the bat. Great stuff.

The Swimsuit Special and MTV non-video awards I could live without.

The VMAs should stay in, though. I mean, the show the MMVAs, the Brit Awards, World Music Awards and MTV Europe Awards as well, so it's fairly well balanced there. Sure, awards shows are boring, but the fact that Much shows stuff from overseas as well helps give you an idea of what others are watching.

Becoming... is an interesting concept, but it's pretty cookie cutter, in that, artist and video aside, it's exactly the same product with all the people saying the exact same thing. I'd prefer that Much spend more money on Gonna Meet A Rock Star or other in-house productions, ya know?

I watch VH1 in the morning because they have Jump Start, which is pretty much Rock music videos for a few hours. It's a good way to start the day and the music is 100x better than MTV.

It is too bad that VH1 has seemingly gone down the crapper. I used to remember watching that station late at night because it had a better video selection than MTV did, where they would play videos that were up to a year old, while MTV seemingly played the same 10 videos all night.

Of course, I love MuchMusic now that I live in Canada now. I love the fact that they will occasionally throw out some old video out there that I have not seen in years, like a few months ago I was watching, and they showed that video with DDP and the Flock in it, and I was totally shocked. It was forgettable, but it was nice that they just played a video like that, instead of the same boring stuff all the time. I just hope Much does not fall into the same crapper MTV and VH1 have. That would suck.

Stuck Mojo, right? I don't think the Flock appeared in Bif Naked's video for "We're Not Gonna Take It".

God that show sucked. The premise was fine the problem is I don't find any of those 4 people funny. Kattan can be amusing on SNL, and Leary's had some funny lines but overall they should of picked a funnier people than that.

I loved 25 Lame. Leary wasn't funny, but Kattan and Stewart did fine. Garofalo was just there. But Vanilla Ice is God. Chris Kattan screaming "No Vanilla! No!" while he tore the studio apart had me on the floor.

Good times.

I don't know. Leary talking into the television rather than the camera is good stuff.

Yep, I believe so. It is always nice to see old videos with WCW guys in them. I also managed to see that Bif Naked video awhile ago as well. It makes me miss WCW. :(

Between MTV, MTV 2, and VH 1 it seems to be 24 hour coverage of VMA crap...this year's looks like the worst ever (save for a couple of the live bands)

Well, Shakira's performing, so her ass will likely save one segment. Avril Lavigne's NOT performing (she's presenting), so I guess there won't be a repeat of her ass's appearance at the MMVAs. Bloody shame...

KYLIE~! is only presenting, so I doubt she'll win any of the three she was nominated for. Imagine my chagrin at this.

Oh, and MTV2 was worth watching if only for their Dance block on Friday nights. 12-3 AM. Ahh. Of course, they've been trying to sabotage it lately, by starting it up to 15 minutes late, ending it early, playing only two or so videos before another commercial break, and playing absolute shit from the 80s that I doubt people knew of back then, let alone now. Fortunately, every five shitty 80s videos were outweighed by absolutely superb fare like Daft Punk, Stardust, Playgroup, and the usual Techno suspects.

Fo sheez,

Kotzenjunge

EDIT: Another MTV conspiracy against good material: KYLIE~! was bumped from fourth of the announced people on the VMAs to the eighth, while the people above her stayed in the same place. Is James Gandolfini(I have no idea who this person is) that much better than her? I DOUBT IT.

Maybe if I knew who he was, I could possibly agree. That's the problem though. I don't.
