Yes, i realize ive posted alot today. Damn rainy saturdays cant do shit on them. So im just running thorugh old WWF shows for fun.

 

This time...

King of the ring 1993:

 

Alot of people say this event was only good thanks to Bret hart. Not neccissarilly. If you can enjoy a PPV enough without complaining, then everything was good, that being my reaction to this show. Going over it now as a (s)mark, I realized alot of thingies. (lol, thingies)

First, the talent pool was pretty good. Not great, but good.

The following are the qualifying matches.

 

Bret Hart recieved a Bye for some reason, maybe being the last champion not in a singles match.

Razor Ramon def. Tito Santana

Mr. Perfect vs. Doink (DRAW)

Mr. Perfect vs. Doink again (DRAW)

Crush vs. Shawn Michaels (D-CO)

Mr. Perfect def. Doink

Mr. Hughes def. Kamala (not even a real match) (CO)

Jim Duggan def. Papa Shango

Bam Bam Bigelow def. Typhoon

Lex Luger def. Bob Backlund

Tatanka def. Giant Gonzalez (DQ-cheap win)

 

Wow, atleast all the shit (except for Crush, HBK, Tito & Backlund) were gone. Including lazy slugs like Kamala, Typhoon & Gonzalez, mediocre talents Matt "Doink" Borne & Papa Shango.

 

Now to the shit still in the tournament:

Mr. Hughes (mr. no heat who got a short bit of fame for stealing UT's urn with Gonzalez)

Jim Duggan (plus his beer belly)

 

and semi-talented people like Razor Ramon, Bam Bam, Lex Luger & Tatanka.

 

The Mainstars were obviously Bret Hart & Mr. Perfect.

 

(to add further effect, everyone was "ranked" 1-8) (How was Razor Ranked 8th!?!?!)

(also i rmeember WWF magazine with a preview of the event. 1 person listed wasnt even in a match)

 

Opening Match (I think)

Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Razor Ramon. Pretty good match by what i remember, i believe better then thier Royl Rumble 1993 Clash. Both men should have fought i think in semi finals. Anyway, I believe the match last somewhere between 10 & 15 mniutes (not sure) and Bret was pretty beat up for most of it. Side note, i think WWF Magazine made this match out to be 20 + minutes in results.

 

Mr. Perfect vs. Mr. Hughes: 1 REALLY Talented Worker WHO SELLS EVERYONE! vs. a no talent black man who wrestles with glasses on. Who also sold an injury when they broke.

I can guess this was lacking with a cheap ending of Hughes hitting Hennig with the Urn. They portected a guy who left the same month.

 

Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Bam Bam Bigelow: 1 Word: FILLER. Duggans last months are as a jobber, his last being against Yokozuna at 1993 Summerslam Specatcular. Lets see. Bearhug, Armbar Slam attempt screwed up, repeat, Headbutt bam over.

 

Tatanka (BUFFALO!) vs. "The Narcississt" Lex Luger

What is the ......DEEEAAAAL?! 2 UNDEFEATED WAY OVER MIDCARD SOON TO BE UPER MIDCARDERS facing each other in ROUND 1?!!? (well 2, but 1 that counts) Spells danger when JR is going nuts about the time. REEEEEEEEST HOOOOOOLDS STAAAAAAAALLLLLL ALLLLLOOOOOOOOT BY WHAT i remember, and guess what? If you dont know, go to fuck ot hell!!!

 

Bret "Hitman" Hart Vs. Mr. Perfect:

Wow, the rematch from SS91. I have no memory of any matches foward so can anyone clue me in on the notable stuff then having to read a whole rant?

 

Hulk Hogan vs. Yokozuna

Wait, this is the last match of memory. Hogans  last (well, cant say last) Title defense in the WWF. Yokozuna controls with his plodding nerve pinch, bearhugs and token stalling, with some Hogan punches. Slam, nope. Slam, nope. slam, nope. Yokos down after a few clotheslines, camera man (jannetty or wippleman) "blind hogan with a fireball that hits near his stomach, legdrop later and Yoko kills hulkamania. To add insult to injury, banzai!!!! Savage sounds surprised. Why? Cause he actually jobbed to someone

 

Smoking Gunns & Stiener Brothas vs. Money Inc. & Head Shrinkers:

No Clue, cept it probably was dumb.

 

Crush vs. Shawn Michaels:

I remember the ending basically. Crush has HBK done, but is distracted by rthwe 2 Doniks that have been pissing him off and HBK gets the win. Also, its Diesels first WWF PPV.

 

Bret Hart vs. Bam Bam Bigelow:

Same thing, fill me in.

The Bret Hart/Bam Bam Bigelow match was good except they had to restart the match because Sherri caused Bret to lose the first time.Does anyone else realize that Sherri was always the only one ever caught for outside interference?

My memory's pretty bad, so I don't remember details, but I remember the card was pretty good.  

 

* The Bret Hart-Mr. Perfect match was, IMO, vastly better than the SUMMERSLAM one (which I feel is overrated).  The Bret-Razor match was also pretty good.  Bret-Bam Bam was pretty weak, but Bret was wrestling his third match that evening (without dogging the other two), so I'll give him props.

 

* Seeing Hulkamania come to an end was also fun, but now knowing that he'd be back just nine short years later would probably kinda ruin it for me a bit.

 

* The Shawn/Crush match wasn't bad despite the screwy ending.

 

* The tag match was bad.  Luger-Tatanka was boring as hell due to the restholds (which stemmed from the fact that neither knew how to put on a 15-minute match that was...you know...entertaining).  Perfect-Hughes was atrocious, as was Duggan-Bigelow.

I actually really enjoyed that show,I remember that was the last PPV the WWF had before I moved from Long Island(Home of women's figure skating goal medalist)to Connecicut and I remember my parents went to Price Club(it's like Cosco)and I stayed home with my sister and we were really enjoying the show together and when my parents came home we were both just sitting there calmly without fighting,it was one of those moments that was like WOW I am enjoying watching wrestling with my family.I thought the Bret Hart Vs. Mr.Perfect match was better than the one at WWF SummerSlam 1991 too!!!

KOR '93 is one of my favorite PPV's for a few reasons.  First off, I'm a HUGE Bret Hart mark and this was his defining show.  Second, I hate Hogan and the end of Hulkamania was beautiful.  OK...lets go down the line.  

 

Bret - Razor - classic setting as it was the mat technician vs the muscular brawler.  Match was MUCH better than their 93 Rumble match for a few reasons.  The pacing and psychology were well done.  Razor tries to wrestle Bret for a few minutes and once Bret pretty much dominates, he starts to resorting to brawling tactics.  He works over Bret's back and midsection (most likely to set up the Razor's Edge) and stomps on Bret's hands.  Heenan actually points out the reasoning very simple "If you can't punch a man, if you can't hold a man, you can't beat him".  Bret tries to work in his FIVE MOVES OF DOOM, working over the back to set up for the Sharpshooter, but gets caught by Razor's power.  Finally, Razor goes for a superplex after Bret reversed a Razor's Edge attempt into a small package.  The superplex would have definitely caused more pain to Bret's back, therefore insuring that he would take his finisher.  Instead, Bret shifts his weight on the superplex, and Bret's working of Razor's back comes to fruition as Bret lands on top of Razor for the pinfall.  

 

Perfect v Mr. Hughes....- nothing note worthy except after Hughes knocks Perfect with the urn, Perfect sells the shot to the head all the way to the back, but by his second match, the injury isn't affecting him anymore.  

 

Bam Bam - Duggan - Bam Bam gets put over clean after Duggan misses the 3 point stance, hits his ribs and Bigalow drops his head right on them for the pin.  

 

Luger - Tatanka - Luger has to wear an elbowpad, because his steel plated elbow shot is deemed unfair (like an elbow pad is really going to soften the blow). tons of restholds.....Ross was screaming at the top of his lungs "ONE MINUTE REMAINING, ONE MINUTE REMAINING".  Note worthy items, Bam Bam was feuding with Tatanka, and common knowledge means they meet in the semi's...with Bigalow even stating during the match that he wants Tatanka, yet it never happens.  The time limit is winding down and Luger is wrestling like he has another 10 minutes to go.  Savage on commentary makes NO sense...its great Classic Savage commentary.  Bigalow gets a bye to the finals.  

 

Semis-

 

Bret v Perfect - Interview with both men before the match, bring up SummerSlam 91, with Perfect still being bitter (yet Perfect was a face, the first time that I had ever seen a shade of grey on WWF TV.  Usually, when both guys are faces, its just a matter of respect and they are all nice).  Bret, in a nice touch, taped up his fingers, because of what Razor did in his match.  These guys put on a wrestling classic for 20 minutes...much better than their overrated SummerSlam 91 encounter because Perfect's back wasn't injured.  Perfect and Bret work over each others legs.  Bret works on his leg again, putting on a figure 4...and Perfect can't get out.  He reaches the ropes and this is where the match get really interesting.  Bret tries for the sharpshooter, but right before he has it applied, Perfect grabs his hand and pulls on his fingers to get out of it....Heenan points out that this is the Mr. Perfect that he used to manage...the one that would do anything to win.  Perfect puts on a sleeper and kicks away Bret's hand when he gets to the ropes....keeps in on til a count of 4 from the ref.  He attacks Bret's leg and gets it in bad shape with the help of the guard rail on the outside.  He pretends to help him back in the ring, but just cheap shots him and gives him a small package, but Bret's legs are still stronger than Perfect's after working on them for so long, and he reverses the small package for the win.  After the match, Perfect is upset, talks trash to Hart, but ultimately shakes his hand.  

 

Hogan - Yoko.  Hogan can't slam Yoko.  Camera of DOOM!  Hulk gets pinned with a legdrop for the title.  Eats a bonzai drop as a goodbye gift.  The announcers promise an update on hulks condition, but it never comes.  

 

Smoking Gunns/Steiners vs Money Inc/Headshrinkers.  Decent bout because of Dibiase and the Steiners.  Faces win with a clean victory over the champs that set up a title chase eventually.  

 

Crush - Shawn.  Diesel is introduced to the world on PPV in a backstage interview.  Doesn't really do much in the match.  Crush tries to overpower Shawn, but HBK wins in the end after Crush is distracted by multiple Doinks.  

 

Bret - Bam Bam.  The announcers play up the fact that Bam Bam hasn't wrestled in 90 minutes, and only had one match, as opposed to Bret who had 2 and was only maybe 40 minutes from his match with Perfect.  Also, Bret's hands, back and leg are injured.  Naturally, Bam Bam attacks the back with headbutts and backbreakers.  Bret tries to comeback in any way he can, biting, scratching, etc.  Eventually, he tries to put the Sharpshooter on and can't because Bammers legs are too big.  Bam Bam tosses Bret to the outside and argues with the ref about something while Luna Vachon hits bret in the back with a chair shot, and Bam Bam pins Bret after a top rope headbutt.  Referee from the back comes out, points out the interference and the match is restarted.  Bam Bam tries to take Bret out quick, but makes a mistake by charging him, eating boot, and getting rolled up quick in a victory roll by a desperate Bret!

 

Bret Hart is the King of the Ring.  

 

During the coronation, a tired, beat up Bret Hart is confronted by Jerry Lawler, who claims to be the real king.  Hart tells Lawler that if he had any real guts, he would have entered the tournament to prove it....and Lawler jumps Bret from behind.  He uses the scepter on him, his throne and thrashes an already beat up Bret Hart to end the show, and giving Bret is next big fued.
