Nirvana...

Recommended Posts

Guest HollywoodSpikeJenkins

I was flipping through the channels on TV, and came across MTV 2, which was airing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and then "Heart Shaped Box". And Im a fan of theres, not hardcore fan or anything, but I liked there music. The lead singer killed himself, and the drummer is in Foo Fighters now. But besides that, what do you people think about Nirvana?

Ok band, started a movement, which was really realyl need, but realyl bad lyrics, new born babies smell like butter? what.

Still the live album is probably one of the best albums ever cause it captured who nirvanna was. It showed influence, with the bowie cover, and how they didnt want to sell out, they didnt play teen spirit which was their big hit, but they took other songs and made the performace very memorable. and kurt has a great voice to follow ascoustics.

Legendary? Yes.

Greatest? No.

They are only legendary because of Cobain's short life and the Grunge movement.

To pretty much combine the sentiments to justsoyaknow and naz, there probaly the best Grunge Band ever, but no the best rock band ever, there hyped up to the bejesus because of Cobain's death and Grohl beuing in a better band now

My favoirte group of all time so my opinion may be biased, as far as being legdendary, to an extent, they accomplished more in 3 years than alot of groups do in 20.

As far as Cobain's guitar work goes, if your looking for some over-blown, cock-rock guitar solo, this isn't the band for you.

They were also highly influetnal, as almost anything that came out after Nevermind was influnced by it, part of the reason people dislike Nevermind is because it's been done so many times by different bands.

Did Kurt's death help the band? Yes and no, they were rumored to be breaking up anyway, so we probably wouldn't be hearing anything new, and his death unfourtantley was what brought the Alternative/Grunge movement to it's knees.

They were the biggest group of the 90's and the most exciting thing to happen in music since the Punk movement of the late 70's.

Just remeber, while the world was listening to Warrant and Guns n Roses and all of those other faceless hair bands, Kurt, Krist, and Dave were creating the greatest album of the 90's.

I'm done.

Mudhoney was/is the best grunge band ever, and "Touch Me I'm Sick" is one of the greatest rock songs ever. Nirvana's not bad, but this worshipping of them is borderline ridiculous.

if nirvana was the most exciting thing in music since the 70s, what does that make the pixies, who cobain by his own admission ripped off?

Nirvana was pretty good, but when Kobain died, the just became overblown, overexposed and way overrated. I thought Alice in Chains was the best grunge band during the early-90's movement

MOst....Overrated....Band...Ever

Don't get me wrong, "Nevermind" was a classic...and the rest of the stuff was good, but after he blew his head off they put pushed to legendary status.

If Eddie Vedder had done it and not Kurt, then "Jeremy" would be the big song that "touched a generation" and Pearl Jam would be the subject of this thread

Greatest rock band? Not even close.

Greatest grundge band? Nope, sorry that goes to The Melvins with Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden all in the run for the top. Hell it was The Melvins that inspired that fellow named Cobain in the first place. They did it better than anyone else before the grundge movment and continue to do it today. I saw them in 96 and without a doubt one of the best live bands ever. King Buzzo rules.

I first heard Nirvana's "Bleach " album before "Nevermind" was released. Me and another friend of mine were way into the Sub Pop scene.(I was also getting into the extreme sound of Earache Records at the time. Talk about two very different scenes) Hell I still have a Sub Pop "Loser" T-shirt I got way back around 89/90. Will never part with that piece of history. Always liked "Bleach" but always thought "Nevermind" was just way too over produced and glossy.

Good band but if Cobain and the rest of Nirvana was around today they would be playing half empty small clubs. IMO of course. :)

Actually Swan, Mudhoney was the first grunge band. The Melvins were indeed earlier than Nirvana though, in fact I beleive Nirvana basically copied their style from them. Regardless, Nirvana did it better in my opinion. If you want to debate the greatest grunge band it's really impossible because every grunge band really was very different and depending on what kind of music you like otherwise is going to dictate which one you like the best. None of the bands were necsessarily "better" than the others, just different. Though, yes, definatly, Cobain was the least talented lead player. However, I think the argument could also be made he was the most creative rhythm guitarist. But if it really matters my favourite Grunge band is Mudhoney, followed by RHCP, then Nirvana, then AIC.

I think putting the label of "grunge" on The Melvins is not doing them justice. I think they are more rooted in the stlye of Black Sabbath then that flash in the pan movement we all knew as "grunge".

Actually Swan, Mudhoney was the first grunge band.

Melvins formed in 1985 with the first album released in 1986. Mudhoney formed in 1987 and released a single that year. First album appeared a year later on Sub Pop. Just mindless information I have.

Mudhoney is still da shiz-nit. They were never really grunge of the Nirvana vein; they had more in common with the Kinks and the Stooges. Their new album, Since We've Become Translucent, rocks bells.

Nooooo! I had a long post going but AIM opened a site in this window and I lost it all!

Anyway, I think Nirvana, especially Nevermind is vastly overrated. However, I also won't deny that they had "it", even though they were far from the greatest rock band, or even the greatest grunge band, they were captivating to a lot of people, which is why even today they have so many devoted fans. Personally though, I only liked Bleach and a few songs off In Utero.

Also, Incandenza's right... even though the only Mudhoney song I know is "Touch Me I'm Sick", it's an awesome song... blows "Smells Like Teen Spirit" out of the water (although I never really liked that song anyway)!

No, I think that they're far from the greatest rock band of all time ... I don't even think they're the best grunge band (that'd be Flipper)

They were in the right place at the right time, pure and simple. I think that their 15 minutes of fame were just about over when Cobain died.
