CMLL 8/24/02 Workrate Report

I was at the ROH show last night, which is why this is a day late (but not a dollar short)

WHAT WORKED

Hombre Sin Nombre/Safari/Negro Casas take on Zumbido/Juvie/Virus in a “Guys we don’t see too often (and Casas)” match. No entrances, but we’ll live. HsN now has a big question mark on his mask and looks like one of the Riddler’s henchmen. Safari starts us off as he runs through Virus and Zumbido. There was a wacky spot where Zumbido was crouching on the floor, and Safari did a top and gave him a sunset flip, which seems like it would hurt Safari a lot more than Zumbido. Anyway, we get a nice HsN/Juvie sequence, as Juvie seems motivated tonight. Casas gets tagged in and soon gets Zumbido with the Casita and HsN punches Virus’ ticket with the headstand backslide. Segunda caida is started by a nice HsN/Virus segment. Did Casas just imply that Juvie was gay? Zumbido tries walking the ropes but gets crotched for his efforts. It soons turns into what looks like a rudo beatdown, until Guerrera accidentally crotches Virus on the top turnbuckle, allowing HsN to hit a powerbomb into a facebuster on Juvie for the win. Rudos argue afterwards about what went wrong. Fine action, a bit too short for my liking, but if they’re giving the rudos an angle, I’m down with that.

Mascara Magica handles Guapo auditions. I thought they called the first guy Tony Rivera but I’m not sure if it was him or not. Lex Luthor is up next, who sorta looks like Dom Irrera. A scantily clad female is next, who’s interested in a valet position. Last is a transvestite. Is there a talent switch with AAA going on? Mascara decided to call it a day. Smart man.

Semi-main finds Dr. Wagner/Black Tiger/Takemura vs. Shocker/Mascara/Vampiro. Doc’s wearing Tajiri pants. A big brawl breaks out, with the rudos gaining the upper hand and Wagner pinning Vamp with a powerbomb in short order. More of the same to start the segunda caida, as Masada and Nozawa stomp on Magica for fun. Takemura jumps off of Tiger’s back and gives Shocker (who’s seated on the top turnbuckle) a nice looking rolling kick. Felipe Ham Lee comes down and gives Nozawa and Masada the boot. Rudos hit a nice Superkick/German Suplex combo. Shocker gets rammed crotch first into the post. Tecnicos finally make a comeback and start beating the shit out of the rudos. Shocker nails Wagner with the big elbow to win the fall. Tercera caida settles down into a standard match, and golly is it rocking. Shocker runs through all the rudos and looks great doing so. There’s a segment later on where he and Doc just starting striking the crap out of each other. Time is money, so we’ll skip to Tiger accidentally dropkicking Wagner and Shocker hitting the fireman’s carry powerbomb on Tiger for the three. Vamp hits a half-Jackhammer half-Falcon Arrow on Takemura to win the match. The brawling segments were good and you can’t beat the wrestling portion. Too bad the show didn’t end there.

Stellar moments had some clips of last week, and also a ringpost Asai Moonsault from someone, as well as Mephisto getting shoved off the top rope to the floor and taking out a cameraman in a cool visual.

WHAT DIDN`T WORK

Say, a Talibanes skit. They talk about their upcoming match and start to pray, until Emilio stops them and brings them in front of a black wall with a “Mezquita” (mosque in Spanish) sign taped to it. Praying commences. Nope, can’t approve, sorry.

Talibanes skits mean a Talibanes match can’t be far behind. Indeed, they team with Universo Dos Mil to take on Rayo de Jalisco, Tinieblas Jr., and Gigante Silva. Yikes. Actually, Tinieblas did have some pretty good sequences with Universo and Scorpio, including a pretty balls out tope suicida. But that was surrounded by a lot of Rayo making the bad guys hit each other and Silva hitting the forearms to the back. Life’s too short to dwell on this, so we’ll say Silva wins with a Giant Press on Bestia and Emilio. I have to wonder about these Silva matches: Is Silva a draw? Is he really over with the crowds? A friend of the bookers? I just don’t know.

Brazo de Platino challenges Ultimo Guerrero and Rey Buccanero to a match between himself and I guess Brazo de Plata. That’s pretty low on the totem pole of matches I want to see.

Black Warrior trains for his match against Felino, and Olimpico shows up, I’m presuming to deliver a message. Black Warrior goes back to flipping and then stares at the camera for a while to end the skit. Weird.

I heard bad things about the Legend of the Silver Mask finals, and I hoped that the people who had already seen the match were wrong. Sadly, they weren’t. The Felino/Warrior match started ok, but then they proceeded to badly blow two spots in about a ten second span. The whole thing was just spot-spot-spot, a lot of them not hitting cleanly at all. At times they really weren’t on the same page, or even in the same library. They did hit a few nice spots, but there was no flow at all, or anything to really draw you in. I’ve watched it twice and still nothing sticks out. They badly blow the ending until Felino finally ends it with a sunset flip powerbomb. Even more disappointing when you consider that this is supposed to be a big match. Watch the IWRG 2/28 match against Pantera—it’s infinitely better.

Main event dissapointed, but two good matches help ease the pain.

the Felino vs Black Warrior was such a big dissappointment as Black Warrior of all people blows a running Hurricana and another spot that makes me wonder if he is related to Venero.

is Hombre sin Nobre the same guy as Hijo de Rayo? I wish they would have more Zumbido matches

They are one and the same. The explained this I want to say in November. It was when Misterio/Nicho/Halloween/ and Damian were down there working some of the shows. On the show they ran the promo about 8 times

I remember that but was new to the show and no idea who he was, it seems like that was the last time Hombre sin Nobre was on tv until recently. Any reason why he changed the name & mask other than Hombre sin Nobre is more entertaining than Rayo de Jalisco?

Actually Hijo de Rayo is not really his biological son. It is his stepson. There was a big squabble with the step dad didn't want to claim him as his son. In Mexico they ran a newspaper ad with possible names for the son. They settled on Hombre Sin Nombre. The step dad went to Paco Alanso to complain, and because of loyalty to Hombre Sin Nombre step dad they wouldn't give him any push unless he changed his name. Kinda confusing.

I wish Hombre Sin Nobre would change the color of his mask since there are far too many luchadores with black masks. Or at least go half Rayo half his own design for a mask since he is just the step son :)

I also like the reports that you're doing. Keep it up. I finally got Lucha in Austin about a year ago.

Yeah they do a good jog. I just like to get different takes from people. Lucha reviews aren't like RAW reviews where you can find them anywhere.

would it be consider crue and unusual punishment to have a review for AAA? The only one show that I found entertaining as of late was the TripleMania 10 shows. Too much Chucky vs mini pink boring luchadore Cruile

I used to have that same Black Warrior pick as my avatar when I post on Ezboard (just changed it a few days ago), so I was all sorts of confused when I saw razateca's posts. I thought I had posted like 5 times in the thread.

Anyway, given the generally bad matches and goofy gimmicks, I'd say reviewing AAA would neatly fall under cruel and unusual. Only two guys I give a damn about are Oscar Sevilia (even though he looks like he raided Tito Santana's wardrobe) and Pathfinder. They did have that good Triplemania show from Japan a month or so ago with a nice Sevilia/Apache match and an 8 man with Jushin Liger and CIMA.

I changed it to Black Tiger, same family different wrestler

I wish they would have more Mascarita Sagrada and La Parkita matches as they are the only reason to watch AAA for me.
