Greatest Masked Wrestler of all time

Recommended Posts

Guest gwf0704

Just curious to find out who you all consider the best masked wrestler of all time.  I'll throw in Mil Mascaras as most entertaining, Masked Superstar as best heel, Tiger Mask as most athletic, but Mr Wrestling II as the best all around.  What do you all think?

The Destroyer

From my post in the "Favorite Gaijin" thread:

"One of the greatest all around wrestlers ever.  He was the 60's to the mid 70's Ric Flair.  Except he was better.  EVERYONE needs to go out and buy footage of this man.  You will get hooked.  He was the true master of psychology in the ring.  Jake Roberts would get smoked if you compare him with the Destroyer.  The Destroyer would do all of the little things in a match that would make fans appreciate wrestling more.  If he injured a leg, the Destroyer would have 13 different ways he could attack the leg and not look repetitive or boring.  The Destroyer was perhaps the biggest gajin draw ever in Japan with only Freddie Blassie coming in second.  Back in the day, more than 60% of the TV audiences in Japan would watch the Destroyer wrestle.  Only Rikidozan and "Big Daddy" Shirley Crabtree would come close to that those kind've ratings.  Even though he wore a mask, the Destroyer became a cross-over hit in both Japan and the US.  Back in the day, the Destroyer was just as well known as Hulk Hogan or Austin.  He was huge.  The Destroyer would make you proud to be a wrestling fan.  Get ANY footage of this man that you can."

man I loved Mr. Wrestling 2 back in the day!

My heart says Tiger Mask but I gotta go with Liger, Sasuke and Ultimo Dragon as the super trifecta.

Either Liger or Misterio (I haven't seen much Tiger Mask, though I'm buying a comp soon).

I'd have to go with Brad Armstrong in any of his failed gimmicks under a hood... like father like son so i guess Bullet bob should be included too

I'd have to say it's Rey Mysterio Jr. but Blitzkrieg could easily have been the best if he was used properly in WCW.

Heavys: Destroyer, Mr Wrestling II

Juniors: Blitzkrieg and Hayaubsa. I never like Rey Jr's spotfests.

I would like to defend Rey Misterio Jr.

I think he was good during his ECW tenure.  His 2/3 matches were more than mere spotfest, true it had obviously spot that were hard to understand but it was entertaining to me.  Rey Jr. time in WCW, well at least the 1st year was a great set-up for the Cruiserweight division which surrounded Rey vs Malenko on Nitro every week.

Rey started to get boring and unwatchable when he joined Konnan and formed the Filthy Animals.  The jailsuits, the devil horns&tail!!!! were a waist of talent.  Then when Rey won the CW belt from Kidman he basically refused to defend it for whatever reason.

So therefore Rey Jr. was a great masked wrestler it was when he became a Human Lawn Dart that made him lame.  I hate you Nash and Bishoff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly, Rey Mysterio Jr. was definitley one of if not the best MASKED wrestler of all time. After he lost his match his matches sort of went downhill from there.

Am I the only guy that liked the Black scorpion gimmick? Come on, he was cool, although now it looks lame, but being 6 years old i was like, hes cool, yet scary. And since he was Ric flair, give him credit!

I think the Masked Dusty Rhodes gimmick was more entertaining, you know how he got suspended for beating Tully with a bat.  Then all of a sudden this masked cowboy the Red Ryder started doing the fire side promos.

Can I nominate Vader as best heavyweight masked man?  His matches against Cactus Jack in WCW were entertaining and he was champ in 2 countrys!!!!

The Midnight Ryder (dusty Rhodes) appeared after he lost a match stating Rhodes couldnt wrestle in florida for 30 days, thanks to Kevin sullivan and Jake Roberts. Of course, when the 30 days ended, the Ryder disappeared, until he cost Rhodes another match vs. Sullivan because of an attack by Kevin on a relative of his. I believe the Ryder was Roberts who helped Sullivan in the cage match (the one just mentioned)
