Guest HellSpawn Report post Posted August 30, 2002 My pick is... Dark Knight's rogues: Joker: Name unknown, Pshyco factor: see Carnage above my post (on pochorenella's pick) and elevate the evil 100 times. I dunno if he hates more Bats or Gordon, he just killed Jim Gordon's wife, crippled Barbara, and tried to turn insane poor old Commish. Ras 'al Ghul: Demon's head, Psycho factor: 8 of 10Immortal: he use secrets pits with chemical stuff that revitalize him, he is more like a Magneto, he wants to help our mother earth, the main problem, humans are poisoning the earth, solution? eliminate humans and earth will survive. Bonus point: his daughter, Talia, is sooo f'n hot, and in an alternate universe/story is the mother of Bats' son. Two Face: real name, Harvey Dent, Psycho factor: 9 of 10, he rules his life in base a flip of his coin, an special coin with one side scarred. his crimes are based on #2 and variants, i.e. twins, steal $2 millions, double homicide... Harvey is a friend of Bruce Wayne. Poison Ivy: female, powers: poisonus touch, expert on plant life, Psycho factor: 5, recently she got an improvement on her powers via Joker's semi god power (make yourself a favor and DONT read last year joker's world xover). OK, is late and Im nott much in the mood but still are: Scarecrow: main strenght -> fear Penguin: local mafia boss Black mask: local mafia boss Killer Croc: sometimes a partial mafia boss sometimes just a freak of nature Scarface/ventriloquist: psycho, without scarface the ventriloquist is powerless, with SF, is a major mafia boss. Riddler: burglar, he use riddles as a trademark. The reaper: vigilante Catwoman: status: sometimes rival, sometimes partner, she is a burglar. Bane. Just psycho, steroid abuse. Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted September 1, 2002 Batman. Honestly, Spider-Man and Batman are interchangeable for me so either picks for having the best rogue’s gallery is fine with me. But Batman get's the edge in my pick. Batman's gallery consists of some of the most deranged and complicated villains comics have ever seen. They do not all possess super powers like Spider-Man's rogue gallery do but they make up for it by being some of the most evil men and women to have ever been seen in comics. Besides a select few, almost all of Batman's foes have been abused in life one way or another. The interesting part to that comment above is: Would they have led normal lives if Batman or life had not treated them "wrong" as the villains feel they have been? The Joker became a homicidal sociopath after Batman interrupted a break in at a chemical plant and Batman cornered the Joker and had no where else to go. Instead of risking being caught by the Batman or the police, Jack Napier jumped into a stream of chemicals that turned his skin plain white and caused a deformation in his face by making it look like he is always smiling. When Napier took a look at himself, he snapped. His wife and unborn child had been killed in a freak accident and he was broke and out of work. Life kicked his ass and he just couldn't handle it anymore and took out his frustrations on Gotham City so he might be able to gain some enjoyment out of his miserable life. Harvey Dent was a highly respected District Attorney who devoted his life to fighting crime. He went beyond the call of duty and became a legend in his profession. But soon, his job consumed him and he became paranoid and erratic with people. He and Batman had become allies in their fight for crime but when Harvey went to far by trying to bring down and became obsessed with his job, Batman pulled back and cut off relations from Dent. Dent's finest hour also became his saddest. After years of trying to stomp out crime in Gotham, Dent struck it huge when he helped bring down Gotham City crime kingpin, Boss Maroni. Dent was the prosecutor in the murder trial of the crime boss when at a climatic point in the trial; Dent produced a two-headed silver dollar, which was Maroni's legendary good luck piece. Dent stated that the coin had been found at the scene of the murder and thus proved Maroni was responsible. Maroni realized he was nailed, but got his revenge on Dent by hurling a vial of acid at face. The acid struck the left side of his face, scarring it hideously. The damage seemed permanent and the pain, the ruin of his face, and his fear of losing his wife Grace's love drove Dent insane. Blaming Maroni's silver dollar for his fate, Dent slashed at one side of it with a knife so that one of its heads was now scarred too. Dent however, did not blame place all of the blame on Maroni's coin for his disfigurement. Dent and Batman's relationship was already strained at that point and Dent believed that Batman deliberately let Maroni get away with his attack. This is what drove Dent to crime so he could get back at Batman and the GCPD who upheld the law that failed to help Dent when he was in need of it. Dent felt he was an outcast thanks to the deliberate actions of Batman and the GCPD and he lashed out by committing crimes with the motive that it involved the number 2 somehow, which Dent was obsessed with. Dent's decision to commit crimes was a "fuck you" to everyone he felt that had turned on or failed him in life. Dent felt that the system had failed him and in turn he was going destroy everything that he once believed in. The Harvey Dent/Two-Face/ and Bruce Wayne/Batman relationship is one of the most complex yet interesting relationships in comics. Over the years, it has only been briefly touched upon but never fully explored. Harvey was like a brother to Bruce and when Dent turned into Two-Face, Wayne was crushed to see his former friend shit on everything that he and Dent believed in. Hopefully, Jeph Loeb will explore this relationship one-day in his new run on Batman. There are other examples of Batman's involvement in the birth of his villains such as Bane who based his entire life while growing up on the idea that one day he would defeat the mighty Batman who was looked at as invincible. Bane was directly responsible for the massive prison break at Arkham Asylum where numerous villains from Batman's rogue gallery escaped. All of them killed unknown numbers of innocent victims while also dispatching Arkham guards however they could. The villains that were directly influenced by Spider-Man were Venom and Carnage who had taken on the form of the evilness that inhabited Spider-Man's old black symbiotic costume. Ironically, it was Venom who helped give birth to Carnage who was staying in the same prison cell that Eddie Brock (Venom) was staying at. The symbiote helped break Brock out of prison but left a little surprise for Cletus Cassidy (Cranage). Part of the symbiote that helped break out Brock had left behind chunks of itself around the broken in wall. The symbiote chunks left over took Cassidy and bonded with his blood stream and Carnage was born. Another example of Spider-Man indirectly influencing villains would be Kraven. His child hood friend (brother) the Chameleon brought Kraven over to America in hopes of defeating Spider-Man. Kraven was promptly defeated by the web-slinger and was deported. Kraven would return to hunt Spider-Man and each time he would, he was soundly defeated and arrested/deported. After years of Kraven being defeated by Spider-Man, the once proud hunter snapped and became obsessed with defeating Spider-Man. Some attribute Kraven's madness with the chemical's he would work with to outfit his hunting arsenal. Whatever the reason might be, Kraven became a manic-depressive who would not be satisfied until he was rid of Spider-Man once and for all. Kraven succeeded but he did it by tranquing Spider-Man which years earlier, Kraven had discouraged due to it being a tainted victory. Karven wanted to defeat Spider-Man in fair combat rather than cheap means. Karven killed himself after he had defeated Spider-Man and had proven to himself that he was just as good/better than the menace that plagued him for years. Those are the best examples of Spider-Man directly/indirectly influencing his foes to become murderous monsters. The other members of Spider-Man's rogue gallery would have become murderous monsters regardless of Spider-Man's influence as each of them were already twisted in the mind before Spider-Man even came along. The Green Goblin was already insane when he fought Spider-Man and unlike the Batman foes mentioned above, the Goblin took his fight to Spider-Man only while the Batman foes above took out their frustrations on the citizens of Gotham in brutal fashion at times. The Goblin was indirectly responsible for Gwen Stacy's death but he did not snap her neck before she was falling in the air. Stacy's death was a freak accident with the Goblin having the intention's to bring Spider-Man out so he could finish off his hated foe once and for all. There is a difference between going after one person to get the attention of someone and trying to get someone's attention by murdering a dozen or more people in one outing like the Joker or Two Face or even Bane. Spider-Man's villains fit his character. Some of them are zany while they are calculated killers or mad men. Neither rogues gallery is weak at all. They each compliment the character that they are fighting and prove to be a threat each time that they commit a crime. I've given the edge to Batman's rogue gallery based on the brutality and miserable life's they have endured which makes them IMO more of a threat to not just Batman, but to the people that Batman protects. Dr.Octopus might kill a dozen guards in a break out from the Vault but the chances of him murdering 100 people that day is far less than the Joker or Two-Face breaking out who have made it their goal to bring down Gotham and the Batman or anyone else that gets in their way. If I heard that the Joker escaped from Arkham, I would be more scared of him rather than Dr.Octopus or the Vulture. Innocent people are more likely to get murdered by the Batman rogue's gallery rather than the Spider-Man rogues gallery and that is where I am giving the nod to Batman's rogue gallery. As I have stated above, to me, either gallery is fine as a #1 pick. But for the moment I am going to go with Batman's rogue gallery. Honorable mention goes to the Flash's rogue gallery who compliments the hero just as well as Batman's or Spider-Man's.
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Report post Posted September 2, 2002 Sass, that was beautiful, man. Batman had always been one of my favorite heroes and his rogues gallery is pretty much the best I've evr seen in comics.
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted September 2, 2002 Gret job, Sassquatch. I think your point is very well made and I'm tempted to agree with you, but being that I'm a bigger Spidey fan than I am Batman's I'll still give the nod to Spider-Man's villians. Yes, they'res less crazy/psycho or whatever, but they fit Spidey's character and personality in a great way. Somewhat like Ezekiel explained to Peter on Amazing Spider-Man a few months back (if you read the Morlun Saga you'll know what I'm saying.) But any one of them is great, you're right. Hopefully nobody will come here and say Superman's rouge's gallery is the best!
Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Superman's rogues gallery was given a *massive* upheaval when the revamp took place and it worked out for the better. While Superman's rogues gallery is nowhere near Batman or Spider-Man's rogues galleries, it is eons better than his Pre-Crisis one, which was downright deplorable. The ruthless businessman Lex Luthor stomps a mudhole dry in the evil scientist Lex Luthor any day of the weak.
Guest raptor Report post Posted September 4, 2002 It may be my markish tendencies coming out, but I've always felt that the X-Men had the greatest rogues. Even as a child I was bored and jaded when it came to the bank robbing/world domination scheme of the week villains. No matter how great their back stories, almost all of the Spider-Man/Batman/Superman villains fell into this category during my formative years. X-Men villains are great because they all populate the gray area that the heroes themselves populate. Magneto’s ideal are correct, but the way he goes about implementing them that makes him the perfect foil for Xavier. They’re two sides of the same coin. The fact that the X-Men and their villains never needed a “revamp” also proves to me that they’re the best. Morrison’s run is the only thing that comes close to a revamp, but it’s just an extension of plot threads and ideas that have been around for decades. They’ve been the greatest villains since day one, when Magneto tried to take over a military instalation in his attempt to right the wrongs perpetrated against the mutants by humans. Guest pochorenella Report post Posted September 4, 2002 You might have a point there, raptor. But off the top of my head I cannot recall that many X-Men villians that aren't mutant themselves (except for Arcade, but he's a Joker/Toyman ripoff), Sentinels, or even teamates , so I think that's rather bland in comparison to other heroes' villians. Guest gthureson Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Magneto is a great villian, but one great villain does not a rogue's gallery make. Besides, they have gotten so into the 'gray area' that they switch sides far too often to even consider them to have a rogues gallery. Heroes included. Besides Magneto, I can think of....erm.....well, no X-villain that I think, "Man, I can't wait for another story with that guy in it!" Except maybe Juggernaut. I've always like Juggernaut. Mr. Sinister, Apocalypse, Mojo, Stryfe. Eh. They do the job in the stories they are given, nothing more. Its not like Two-Face, where I mark out for every appearance the guy makes. Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted September 5, 2002 Two-Face as a character is on an entirely higher level than any X-Men villain out there today. Not even Mags can touch Harvey who is just fascinating to look at what makes him tick along with his relationship to Batman/Bruce Wayne.
Guest gthureson Report post Posted September 5, 2002 I still like going back to NML and reading the trial of Jim Gordon. Harvey's defence vs. Two-Face's prosecution was just fascinating to read.

Guest raptor Report post Posted September 7, 2002 I don't like Two-Face that much, because like I said earlier, he falls into the kind of plots that are uncharacteristic. You know, like robbing a bank or something equally as asinine. The only X-Villain who robbed banks was Juggernaut, and that was a believable part of his character. And he has shown more character development than most villains, as well. He is as psychologically fascinating as Two-Face, in my opinion,
Guest gthureson Report post Posted September 7, 2002 S'cause Bat-villians are criminals, therefore they commit criminal acts. X-villains are, by and large, god-awfully powerful mutants with delusions of grandeur and rather dodgy goals...that goal usually the capture and/or death of one specific X-Man. Cyclops more often than not, it seems. I always like Juggernaut in the stories where he just left at the end. With the attitude of, "This is just far too much hassle to put up with, I'm gone." Rather than the standard, "Well, it'll be big fight, then someone will knock his helmet off, and the resident telepath will knock him out, and chalk up another victory for Team X after flattening some small town." Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted September 9, 2002 I think out of all the X villains over the years, the one that I have heard are mentioned the most, as someone's favorite has to be Juggernaut. I too am a fan of Juggernaut and he is my favorite X-Men foe. Juggy has this story that fans can relate to. He had a shitty life and then one-day he achieved all of this great power and became one of the toughest beings on earth. Instead of trying to take over the world and mold it to his own liking like most X foes, Juggy just wants to make some extra cash and live out his life by having good times. He's not some miserable despot like Apocalypse or a soap box idol like Magneto. Fans can relate to Juggernaut's life because if they had the power that Juggy has then yeah, some of them might be inclined to rob a bank or take out a contract on someone with Black Tom. Or hell, you might just want to start a bar fight just so you can show everyone in the room that you're the toughest SOB in there. You might even try to become a hero and help save people with the power of the Juggernaut. Who could stop you? Juggernaut is not some would-be world conqueror. He is not trying to eradicate all human life. He is not a mass murderer. The Juggernaut is just an average Joe like you and me that are using his powers the way he sees fit whether it is legal or illegal. The Juggernaut is a nice change up from all of the other X foes and I always look forward to reading stories about him.
