The One And Only Smackdown! Thread

I will admit the little bit that I watched was better than the pure pile of shit I was expecting. I still thought it was god awful boring though. It was a bunch of medicore to decent wrestling where absolutely nothing happened so it is still boring crap. Rey Jr. wrestles Rico? Hope you had your fun with the big boys Rey time to go play with the little fellas again. Moore/Helms/Tajiri/Knoble are doing absolutely nothing. And the #1 contender series two hours to put the shot to the UT. Yippie. Shouldn't they have had Edge cut a promo talking about how he blew his shot to beat the unstoppable monster, or Benoit talking about how this is his shot to get back to his pre-injury main event level, or anybody asking why the hell Rikishi was in there in the first place when he has done nothing to earn a shot at a title shot. They made a big deal about the series but they emphesised Steph's view or who Steph had coming in about it they gave the wrestlers no time save for a three minute throwaway Angle interview and Eddy and Rikishi doing something or other. Correct me if I am wrong (I skipped a lot of the show) but did Steph had more backstage segments and mic time than all of the other wrestlers put together?

. Lesnar is MUCH better than Yoko

Because Brock's DUD's just beat the shit out of Yoko's DUD's. And the difference in overness is overwhelming.

Go back to page 8 and read my post. Here, I'll make it simple: "Anglesault, is there anything you liked about tonight's show? The opener, Mysterio, the main event (with the exception of the outcome)? I know that you like Angle, but surely you must enjoy wrestling for other reasons...right?"

Well...

But unlike in the past, it was all spent building up the tournament, the participants, and the ramifications of winning.

But he's not. Hogan was a much worse choice. HHH was a worse choice.

Hogan was OVER. Beats the pants off the Brock decision right there. I'd say Brock and HHH are in equal status.

Brock's had one quality opponent in the last five months, and one decent but broken down wrestler. What did you expect, him lighting it up in the ring?

Being over is hardly ever a sutible justification of why to put the belt on someone immediately. There are alot of people who have been really over, liek Scotty Too Hotty, and don't deserve the belt. The fact that they knew Hogan was a novelty and still went with it was truly stupid.

If he wants to be WWF champ, DAMN STRAIGHT he should be having good matches with RVD and Booker T.

I'm not saying that it was a GOOD decission. But at least Hogan fits ONE of my requirements for being world champ. Brock fits neither. So the awful choice of Hogan is better than the terrible choice of Lesnar.

Oh come on now, Bubba vs. Brock was 10x's better than anything Yoko ever put out. Not to mention that Brock can actually move and is much stronger and more agile. Not to mention the talent brock has been in there with has been sub-par. No matches with Benoit, Guerrero, Jericho, or Angle yet. I think Matt Hardy is the best opponent he's ever faced... Well, cept for the Rock.

How could you think Smackdown was boring?

Edge vs. Eddie Rocked. Rikishi vs. Eddie was surprisingly good. The main event rocked all sorts of ass with Benoit/Angle stealing the show, the cruisers are progressing along and moore/tajiri was whomp ass as well as Rico/Rey. Sure, things aren't moving along at the speed of light where angles start and end in the same show... it's called 'building', for some reason a lot of people here are oblivious to it.

Booker and RVD? You must be kidding. Those guys are supposed to help Brock develop as a wrestler? Booker's a big time disappointment. You'd expect a guy with as much experience working with good workers would be better, but Booker's a good worker with some bad tendencies in his match (that surprisingly he picked up wrestling Benoit, mainly because he didn't pick up on how to pace and tell a story with his holds). RVD bumps well and all but he's hardly the calire of opponent that will get you good matches everytime out. Entertaining matches, yeah. RVD matches are generally fun to watch. Until you start to think.

Let's look at someone in a similar circumstance. Angle was decent wrestler like Brock when he came in. He bumped alot. He worked a decent story. So does Brock. But it wasn't until he faced opponents of the calibre of Benoit and Jericho that he started picking up early momentum and later the Rock; and it wasn't until he got a secon run against Benoit and later Austin when he got as good as he was now. Has Brock had anything of that calibre?

Smackdown was a good show. As I said in the 2nd post, it had its down points (Rikishi matches, Cena vs D-Von) but for the most part the good matches (Edge vs Eddy, Rico vs Rey and for the most part the Main Event) outweighed the down parts.

Booker vs. RVD on Raw a while ago was just disgusting to watch. Both men were totally exposed in that match. Booker fell out of my good graces after his very poor performances with Eddie Guererro.

Though, IIRC Lesnars match with Booker wasn't that bad. I remember being impressed with the legit power Lesnar had when he handled Booker like a rag doll after he caught a superkick.

Which makes it kind of sad that his matches are so unbelievably bad.

What I don't get is, When it was proven that Brock was basically worthless, there was NO PLAN B, so they had to continue this doomed to fail push from hell. Now the only way you can get Brock over is by using the world title and sacrificing every somewhat big name on the roster-And it STILL might not work. Is it REALLY worth it? Who will they feed to Brock next month in an attempt to get him over? What about the month after that? Will it get to the point where at WM Brock has destroyed everyone else's credibility and there is nowhere to go with Angle? Where does it stop?

I think the ends justify the means with Brock Lesnar. The fact that the Wwf is NOT giving up on him is a very good sign in my eyes. It means they are commited, they are confident, they have direction... They are everything they weren't for the past 2 years.

I am sorry. I was just expecting, for example, in a month's time for a reason to be given why Tajiri/Knoble/Moore/Helms are wrestling each other. I am all for a slow build but it is hard to build with no foundation. The only other angles I can think of are Steph taking up as many segments as she can. Edge/Eddy which I have no idea why they are fighting what is it the "Hey you speared me I hate you" feud. I like the slow built of Matt Hardy. But they are hardly at a great batting average. The only angle they progressed quickly was UT jumping to SD and immediately grabbing a title shot.

But then WHY THE FUCK IS HE WORLD CHAMPION? Let him develop and when he becomes good (Or we realize that he is Billy Gunn 2, but neither here nor now) THEN you give him the belt. They are just throwing shit at the wall and hoping it sticks. Unfortunately, with Brock, they are glueing it to the wall and trying to fool the fans.

I think the ends justify the means with Brock Lesnar.

So, when Brock goes over anyone who is, was, or could have been a name in the WWE just to get this one guy over, and he is the last man standing with a pool of broken careers surrounding him, I'll get back to you.

The fact that the Wwf is NOT giving up on him is a very good sign in my eyes.  It means they are commited, they are confident, they have direction... They are everything they weren't for the past 2 years.

Even if that direction is Straight to Hell?

You forgot the whole Hurricane/Knoble feud?

Obviously they're not just throwing shit on the wall because they've been planning the Brock push for months.

I liked tonight's show. Eddy/Edge was bitchin good and Rico/Rey was awesome as well. Taker being the guy to jump ship was kinda disappointing at first, but he was used right in the mian event, so I really have no animosity over Taker going over. Also, I liked the development of Matt Hardy's heel character and Shannon Moore/Tajiri ruled the earth too.

All in all, a great show. Wish RAW was more like this.

I liked how they are just going with Hardy thinking more and more of himself. I don't get why they fed him to Lesnar though. The previous couple of weeks it looked like he was going to work something with Helms and Moore the slow build to a heel turn. Fine, Good. Then tonight to go into a complete offshoot and getting squashed by Lesnar I don't see how that helps the previous setup the last couple of weeks. It defeats any feud they could have worked because Hardy got squashed by Lesnar so who cares if Helms squeaks one out over him eventually. And if they still feel they need to feed people to Lesnar in squashes to get him over even as champion they really need to abort the Lesnar project now while you can still salvage him.

Obviously they're not just throwing shit on the wall because they've been planning the Brock push for months.

There was the 8000 new directions before that too.

As for the Brock push. In June, when it was apparent that this guy wan't over, and didn't appear to be in the general area of overness, I would have seriously questioned giving him the title at Summerslam.

In July, when he can go out there week after week and kill Face numero uno, and not get ANY reaction, I would have pulled the plug.

In August, when he started a feud with the Rock, and the crowd went "eh" i would have fucking shit myself.

Matt Hardy, victim number one in the this desperation move to get the champ over. He's fucked. who's next? How long before it hits people that are worth a shit?

Actually I consider the Lesnar push the biggest example of the writers throwing shit against the wall. It is just an extending throwing process. The writers were panicking due to the downturn in popularity so Lesnar is their latest attempt to force a change when nothing they can possibly due will likely change anything.

And the obvious solution to the downturn in popularity is TELLING the fans what they want-Brock. No, you don't want those Angle and RVD guys, You want BROCK damnit, and we're going to give him to you, and you're going to LIKE IT.

Ah. The WWF. It caters to the fans.

Tonight's show as ok I guess. I liked Rey and Rico best. There was some other decent tourney stuff. But good lord..another UT main event on PPV? I think we can all surmise that he jobs there and then his main event days are pretty much over.

I'm surprised that so many people hate the RVD/Brock matches. I guess they did have dumb finishes but the Vengeance match (lame DQ aside) is Brock's best match that I have seen. I give it an edge over SS in that the crowd reacted the way it should, rather than in the weird NY way of cheering on a heel over the face. RVD got cheered whenever he did anything, Brock got some boos as well.

Somehow I don't think we've seen the last of RVD/Brcok, I really don't. I'm thinking that could be a decent S. Series main. It's not like there are just SOOOO many good contenders for Brock.

Matt Hardy, victim number one in the this desperation move to get the champ over.

Brock already ran down both Hardys, so it really doesn't matter if he runs down another one for one night again.

Anyway, I enjoyed tonight's show a lot. I was really digging the tournament idea, although it wasn't executed right... isn't the whole point of a tournament to have someone advance more than one round? I can understand them not wanting an Eddie/Benoit since they're both strong heels right now, so instead of killing Eddie by jobbing him to Rikishi (to a SUPERKICK after Eddie spent the whole match working the legs!) why not just have had the first round be Edge/Rikishi and had Eddie interfere against Edge?

Anyway, Rey and Rico was a lot better than I thought it'd be (I love Rico, but because of his age and him not generally wrestling a fast-paced cruiserweight match I wasn't sure it'd be a good match), and I liked the Triple Threat better than the one at Vengeance.

I think you've misinterpreted it Anglesault. The solution they've come up with is building up one new, fresh main eventer no matter what the cost, and than once he's established create a supporting cast. That seems to be the plan even if we can't get rid of HHH.

The reason they put Lesnar on SmackDown was because this is totaly panic mode and they figure that Heyman and Hayes can solve it.

But don't push Angle or RVD as a main eventer. That would Be LOGICAL. No, push someone the fans DON'T want in Brock and make Angle and RVD (Who the fans WANT to be the new main eventers) Ted DiBiase and Randy Savage to Brock's Hogan. UGH.

Meanwhile, just let Brock kill everyone in a desperate attempt to get over when you have SIX people who could take his spot.
