Guest areacode212 Report post Posted August 29, 2002 You may want to try out Ultimate Spider-Man, which is basically a rebooted version of Spidey (he's still in high school, only it takes place now, in 2002). Kevin Smith will be writing Amazing Spider-Man soon, and based on his work on the current Spider-Man/Black Cat miniseries, it should be a lot of fun. His previous superhero work (Daredevil, Green Arrow) was...okay, but not especially mind-blowing. Like Mallrats. Spidey/Black Cat is pretty much his Chasing Amy. I say try out Ultimate Spidey (the first arc is out in TPB) and Spider-Man/Black Cat (which is only up to #2). Tangled Web has had an run of excellent issues, too. Guest pochorenella Report post Posted August 29, 2002 I agree on Ultimate Spider-Man. Probably the best Spidey title in a long while. And while the first and second storyarcs are available in respective TPB, there's an Ultimate Hardcover which covers maybe both combined a a little extra, to boot. And I wholeheartedly recommed getting the Best of Spider-Man vol. 1 Hardcover, which has the Amazing Spider-Man run from J. M Strazinsky (a very good first storyline IMO) and also the famous WTC issue, as well as some sweet Tangled Web stories and an AWESOME retelling of Spidey's first meeting with Daredevil and the Punisher. Trippy, i was going to post almost the EXACT question, except i stopped reading after Peter found MJ...trippy... Considering i read a little ahead of you. -Spider lives in denial for a period, as he is certian MJ is alive. -He Blames other people (Doom, Hulk etc) but finds nothing. -Spider was right all along, MJ was drugged and smuggled off the plane before it took off, and he finds her. The quality has gone WAY up since the long (god, how long it was), dark days of Howard Mackie & John Byrne. I'm NOT excited, at ALL, about Kevin Smith taking over AMS. Guest Sassquatch Report post Posted September 1, 2002 Spider-Man went through a serious makeover in issue #30 for both Amazing Spider-Man and Peter Parker: Spider-Man. J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5 and the creator/writer of Top Cow's Rising Stars became the writer for Amazing Spider-Man with issue #30. Paul Jenkins had been the writer for PP: SM since issue #21 but his book still went through a face-lift. Start at issues #30 for each series (Amazing and PP). Your best bet is to go out and buy the trade paper back's (TPB's) of the series. JMS usually runs story arcs that go on for 5-6 issues. Jenkins has been doing the same as well and just finished writing up a storyline between the Green Goblin and Spider-Man (PP: SM #44-#47). JMS is starting a new storyarc in Amazing with issue #43 with Dr.Octopus and an imposter of his that captured Doc Ock and tried to kill him. The sub plot in the Amazing books right now is Peter trying to get back together with Mary Jane who has since moved on from Peter and his life and does not want to deal with Peter's life. I *highly* recommend you pick up Amazing Spider-Man over any of the other Spidey books (PP: SM, Ultimate Spidey, Tangled Web, etc.) Kevin Smith is tentatively supposed to take over Amazing Spider-Man around issue #50. Right now Smith is doing a mini-series with the Black Cat and Spider-Man. Cat and Spidey have teamed up to find a killer who killed on of Felicia's (Black Cat) friends. Smith is also delving into the Black Cat/Spider-Man relationship, which actually makes for an interesting read. Peter is trying to get back together with MJ but at the same time he is having the time of his life with a former lover who he seems to have still not gotten over. If you have the cash then go out and buy every issue of Amazing and PP: SM. If you don't and wouldn't like to go through the hassle then just stop by your local comic shop/book store and pick up the TPB's of the series so far. Hope this helped. The last issue i read was when Spider found MJ's stalker who smuggles her off the plane. 2) I've read (on this very thread) about other Spiderman comics, what basic storyline/time period are they in and which ones would you recommend? Spider-Man is fighting Doc Ock in Amazing right now yet he just got done beating the Green Goblin. The only things that remain the same in the *regular* Spider-Man universe is what is going on in Peter Parker's life. Peter is a high school teacher in both of the series. Peter is trying to get back with Mary Jane in Amazing Spider-Man but he still thinks about it in Peter Parker: Spider-Man. Etc. The current *regular* universe Spider-Man comics are: Amazing Spider-Man Peter Parker: Spider-Man The new Black cat mini-series Here are the other Spidey books that do *not* have anything to do with the *regular* universe Spidey books: Ultimate Spider-Man Tangled Web Tangled Web is a book where a new writer comes on to tell a Spider-Man story that he would like to write about. Greg Rucka's story in issue #4 is one of the most praised issues out of the bunch, which deals with being in the life of a man who works for the Kingpin. 2) I've read (on this very thread) about other Spiderman comics, what basic storyline/time period are they in and which ones would you recommend? Amazing Spider-Man (regular) Peter Parker: Spider-Man (regular) The Black Cat mini-series (regular) Ultimate Spider-Man (ultimate universe) Tangled Web (self-contained stories written by various writers with a different story each time.) The *highest* recommendation out of the Spidey line that I could give you is Amazing Spider-Man. You can jump on *right now* because with issue #43 JMS is starting a new storyarc that revolves around Dr.Octopus and an imposter of his. Peter Parker: Spider-Man is hit or miss with Jenkins on the helm and his last storyarc with the Green Goblin (#44-#47) was *very* disappointing due to all the build-up it was given. Hope this helped.
