Guest oldschoolwrestling Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 I was watching Smackdown and out of the blue my 8 year old asked why they let Brock beat Rock. I told him Brock beat him 1-2-3 and he said "But if they decide before who wins the matches, why didn't they let Rock win?" I asked him why he thought that. He said he thought that they only have fake matches at house shows (we went to one a few years ago and he was unimpressed since it seems better on tv). Apparently our neighbor kid told him about wrestling being fake. I kayefabed him so all is well. I don't care if he finds out about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Toof Fairy, but not wrestling!!!!
Guest Incandenza Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 It's better he know the truth now rather than look like a fool later.
Guest oldschoolwrestling Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 Find out what about Santa? He's bisexual
Guest Kinetic Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 My parents flat-out told me that wrestling was fake. Hogan had been injured by Earthquake, I think, and I was justifiably concerned for his well-being. My dad, in his infinite wisdom, told me not to worry about it because wrestling was fake and Hogan was probably just on vacation. That obviously upset me even more, since it hadn't even occured to me that it wasn't completely on the level. Long story short, after sixteen years of therapy I'm pretty much okay with it.
Guest Fook_Hing_Ho Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 I'd tell him it's fake. You don't want him to find out later on and think his dad is a liar for telling him it's real. Plus, it makes him a smark, and we all know you can never have enough smarks.
Guest Retro Rob Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 As soon as my parents found out I watched wrestling at age 7 they told me it was fake in the hopes of turning me off of it. That obviously didn't work and here I am today. I say you should tell him. Even though he'll know it's fake he could still be a mark and have fun with it.
Guest Strike Force! Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 It's better he finds out it's fake. You don't want him to turn out like those dudes in the Puroresu folder, where denial obviously runs rampant.
Guest Incandenza Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 There will be enough people giving the kid guff for liking wrestling down the line, so let it be for merely liking it rather than believing it was real.
Guest HartFan86 Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 It's better he know the truth now rather than look like a fool later. I agree. The first thing I did was when I watched wrestling, my dad said "You know that stuff is fake" and I said "Yeah." I wouldn't want my kid going to school saying that wrestling is real cause he'll get teased bad. Edit: Definately Ravenbomb. I wish my Dad told me that. That's what I tell the younger kids who ask me if wrestling is real. I say "It's fixed and they plan it all out, but sometimes things can happen for real like people getting hurt."
Guest HBK16 Posted August 30, 2002 Report Posted August 30, 2002 My cousin asked me if wrestling is fake. That caused for an emergency fake sleep drill. I just told him I would tell him after my nap. lol. Works like a charm!

Damn, Kingpk, that incident must've really scarred you, seeing as the Hogan/Earthquake thing took place in 1990. Are you a distant time traveler from 2006, or is your life being written by Dusty Rhodes, or both?
Guest treble charged Posted August 31, 2002 Report Posted August 31, 2002 Everyone told me that wrestling was fake, but I wouldn't believe them. Thinking back, though, I think I always knew that the 'gimmicks' were fake, as I was smart enough to realize that no one would name their child 'The Undertaker', but I always thought that the fighting aspect of it was real. Oh well.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted August 31, 2002 Report Posted August 31, 2002 My mom told me that it was fake after I was legitimatly shaken up after Tatanka's undefeated streak came to an end at the hands of Ludvig Borga. I was crushed. ::sobs::
Guest HBK16 Posted August 31, 2002 Report Posted August 31, 2002 I first learned that wretling was fake when I was in the first grade and I was watching WCW. My sister came up to me and she told me it was fake and didn't bother to watch it for 2 years. The I started again with WWF. Damn her!

Are you a distant time traveler from 2006, or is your life being written by Dusty Rhodes, or both? It's Kinetic, first of all. And I actually started the therapy a few years prior to my wrestling revelation. There was a whole situation with our gardener getting drunk and touching me. Once he became overwhelmed with the realization of what he had done, he tried to bury me in the rose garden. I wasn't really all that traumatized--I was a child, after all, and didn't really understand that Miguel had violated me. What really sent me over the edge was that, as he was burying me, I discovered that my pet rabbit Nibbles hadn't run away after all. The wrestling thing was sort of secondary to all this. It did come up, though. You can believe that.

Guest MaxPower27 Posted August 31, 2002 Report Posted August 31, 2002 One finger? I remember Yokozuna coming out, and banzai-ing Tatanka when the ref was out, and Borga pinning him. I was so distraught that I may not remember anything about a 1 finger. Then again, I didn't have cable until I was 13, so maybe it was a different match.
Guest treble charged Posted August 31, 2002 Report Posted August 31, 2002 No, after that part (which I completely forgot about), Borga used just one finger to pin Tatanka. I damn near cried.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted August 31, 2002 Report Posted August 31, 2002 It's funny how almost all of my fav's from back in the day are either (a) dead (B) working indies © out of the business. Man, I miss being a mark.

It did come up, though. You can believe that. Sorry about that. Mental lapse. Happens on occasion. (Once every 30 seconds) Anyway, I knew wrestling was fake BEFORE I started watching it. My dad told me all these stories about meeting Andre the Giant and other various wrestlers during his days as an usher at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, and how the heels would be hamming it up with the faces, so I had a pretty good idea of how it worked. I started watching it one Saturday in 1994, because there was nothing else on. The first match I ever saw was a King Kong Bundy squash, and I liked it, so I kept watching. Eventually, CFCF-12 picked up WCW as well, and I've been a big fan ever since.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted August 31, 2002 Report Posted August 31, 2002 Man, my dad was all "How the hell can you watch that? It's so fake." I was like "Yeah, but Undertaker's cool." The joys of being young and stupid.. Now, my old man's like "How the hell can you watch that shit? It's fake." Now I say, "So is the news." He usually wanders off confused for a while after that.
