Guest OctoberBlood Report post Posted August 30, 2002 I have pointed out I was wrong about calling them "queers". But yet, you bring up the point: What does calling the Backstreet Boys Backstreet Queers accomplish except show how "cool" you are by being ant-BSB and thus anti-pop? - How is calling someone queer, being cool? My apologies... as a dial-up user, it often takes a while to load/post things, and I wrote that up as you were posting it, and it didn't post/load up your response until after I already posted it. Anyway, I have no idea why so many teenage males (and some females) are inclined to call boy bands they dislike gay (but like I was trying to say earlier, a lot of them probably don't believe that, but they want to come across as "cool" and "unique" by trying extra hard to be blatantly anti-mainstream and taking every chance they can to insult pop stars). I think it's because: a) they're jealous that the boy bands have so many female fans, and by calling them "gay" they make themselves feel better ("Ha! Those girls are so stupid... they should be liking me, but instead they like someone who would never like them back because he's GAY!") B) no matter how tolerant society as a whole gets, in the high school locker-room the belief is still that being gay somehow makes you less of a man. Thus, these unliked boy bands, who sing songs of romance, often in high-pitched voices, are "unmanly", and thus gay. I hate this "minor" form of homophobia the most because it's so persistent. Again, sorry I missed your earlier apology. I totally understand what you are saying, the reason I went out on a limb and called them queers, is because of the way the sound and sing. They sound like little girls, or a little boy who hasn't hit puberity. I understand I was being immature.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted August 30, 2002 Wow, I leave and the last post belonged to me. Now I come back, and it's prompted a Pop v. Everything Else discussion. I'm not taking sides on the matter, because I LOVE Pop and LOVE stuff that isn't Pop. Most of my taste resides in the non-Pop arena, but that's only because I decided to EMBRACE THE POP~! a short time ago. And kudos to Starvenger or whoever it was for sticking up for my girl!!! Because of my obvious bias toward certain, ahem, personalities, I cannot contribute anything at this time. Hey! I just remembered I have Random Observations to write still! I'll wait until later, so I can get the same late-night thought processes. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted August 31, 2002 I just ignore pop music, I don't like it, so I don't listen to it. It's when pop musicians masquerade as music I do like that I get annoyed. Nu metal bands pretending to be heavy fall in that category. Pop princess music and boy bands are something I just absolutely do not give a shit about. I just stick with the CD's I like, and check out bands live. Radio singles and hype don't really help to give a clear look (or listen) as to what a band really sounds like. Don't like it, don't listen to it. and don't hang out with people that listen to crap.
Guest Punk Princess Report post Posted September 1, 2002 God... why would someone write such a long article about an artist they obviously don't like? You don't see me writing articles like that about Tool or Linkin Park. Why are people taking this so fucking seriously? OK, so Avril's not "punk" in your guys eyes... big deal! Can't we "MTV slaves" be allowed to like what we want even if it's not "really punk"?

Guest Ozymandias Report post Posted September 1, 2002 No one "ruined" your board, your board fucking sucked. Honestly now, a message board that shuts down permanently because of too-much traffic? WTF??!!!
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted September 1, 2002 Sad, sad person. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest bravesfan Report post Posted September 1, 2002 I agree with some of the later posts of pop music being "contrived and zombie-like" and rarily do the exceptions appear (Michael Jackson) so we can't really validate their worth. That "boy-band manager fatguy" (y'all know who I'm talking about, right? Ernie?) goes out to manufacture teeny-bopper songs and make money, not display said talents of Justin Timberlake or <insert name here>. Pop is "popular music", the stuff teenagers cream over...shallow as a wading pool in terms of lyrics---but not necessarily a overview of someone's actual overall talent
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted September 1, 2002 I dled Avril's album and it rocks. I'm probably seeing here live tomorrow

Guest Cancer Marney Report post Posted September 1, 2002 I don't know anything about Avril Lavigne, or whatever the hell you guys did, but I think I like Punk Princess. She's plucky.
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted September 2, 2002 So is Punk Princess actually Evenflow or is it the real deal? Because if she is, in fact, the genuine article I'd like to say this: That whole invasion thing was my idea. I found the board and posted the first phony topic. It was about Avril's pet donkey. Everyone else was following my lead. I started it. Me.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted September 2, 2002 I dled Avril's album and it rocks. Damn right it does... I'll go listen to it now.
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted September 2, 2002 I don't know anything about Avril Lavigne, or whatever the hell you guys did, but I think I like Punk Princess. She's plucky. The real life punk princess isn't so plucky. More "incompetent" and "pathetically impotent." I try not to be so harsh though. She's probably like 14 years old or something. Guest Cancer Marney Report post Posted September 2, 2002 I try not to be so harsh though. She's probably like 14 years old or something. Threatening to rape 14 year-old girls, even as a joke, isn't harsh? I was disappointed in you when I read that.
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted September 2, 2002 It was in the context of a character I was playing. I felt a little dirty doing it, but I was just trying to see how far I had to go to get banned. That and my post, as the same character, about paying adolescent boys to manually gratify me because my arthritis was too bad are the things I quasi-regret. Also, I only threatened to rape them after they threatened to push me down the stairs and break my hip. Keeping in mind that I was a one-legged 80 year old WWII vet who was perversely infatuated with Avril Levigne, what kind of person would threaten to do that? The stuff in nhb I just said b/c I knew it wasn't punk princess anyway. I know though, it was wrong of me. I know you don't like the "buts," so please forgive the one in the prior paragraph. EDIT: removed an extraneous apostrophe
Guest Cancer Marney Report post Posted September 2, 2002 Fair enough. <g> I don't think it was cruel, in that context, just tasteless. 'sokay.
Guest LooseCannon Report post Posted September 2, 2002 Tasteless yes. I can't hide from that. I also feel bad about besmirching the good name of those who actually fought in world war II. But I didn't realize that untill later.
Guest kingkamala Report post Posted September 2, 2002 I'll put it simple, people like what they like if they like Avril Lavigne so be it it's not my $14.99, if they like Slayer I don't have a problem with it. You like what you like and it's that damn simple.
Guest Michael Joel Benoit Report post Posted September 3, 2002 I bascially don't really like Avril's songs. Complicated is catchy. I can't get that song out of my head. I like the new song. But, moreso, I think she is HOT!
