Best Year For WWF/E Championships?

Recommended Posts

Guest Snappy Nappy Dugout

World Title: 2001 IMO was the best year for the world title. Austin 9 month run(I'm not counting Kurt 2-week run) was just what the belt needed. Plus there were alot of contenders like Jericho, Angle, Benoit, RVD, HHH, Booker T. And there were classic matches like Benoit Vs Austin From Smackdown and Angle Vs Austin at SummerSlam.

IC: 2000 Was a great year for the title. New wrestlers that came in that year help that title to get back to what it ment to be....... Make them stars and contenders for the world title. Minus the Chyna 1 week run, Nothing but Awesome wrestlers held the title that year(Jericho, Benoit, Eddie, Val,).

European: Um, was there even a great year for this title? Oh, 1998 was a good year for the title. Owen, HHH, X-Pac and D-lo Brown was all great title holders. And who can forget the X- Pac Vs D-Lo Brown JD match?

Tag Team: 2000. It was basically Edge & Christan title.

Hardcore: 2000. It's Already Been Said.

Women: I'll say 2000 becuse when Lita won it from Fat Ass...... Whoops, I mean Stephanie, everyone was getting into it, but since Lita wrestling suck ass, I'll say 2002 Is a great year for the title. Trish, Jazz, and Molly has been putting on great matches. There's a bunch of newcomers like Nidia, Victoria, Linda, and Torrie putting on good matches(C'mon, Torrie Neckbreaker RAWKS~!).

Yes he did, the day after Unforgiven.

Eh, I just forgot about that match and can't really consider Booker a contender just from that.

I'd say 1998 was a banner year for the WWF Championship. Michaels finished off his last reign, followed by a very good first reign for Austin. Also, the Rock won his first title that year, winning the Deadly Game tournament at Survivor Series. Finally, Mick Foley got his first title run, beating the Rock on Raw in a fairly well-known match (results given out on Nitro with Raw pre-taped).

That's a really strong list of champions for one calendar year.

I think 2000 has to be a contender for best year for the World Title. HHH's run was just such a good step in revitalizing the title which had been screwed around with quite a bit in '99. There were relatively few title changes, and most of them were done in a very sensible manner (except for of course, KOTR that year). Plus, it saw Angle win the title in his rookie year, which, before the burrial, was just a great example of guy getting hugely over through elevation to the point that putting the title on him made sense.

And I have to agree fully on 2000 being the best year for the IC title. After the Chyna siliness, it was just smooth sailing for a good long period with Benoit's reign being the absolute peak. Just awesome, objective booking that got everyone involved in the title picture and made Benoit seem unstoppable at the same time. Billy Gunn hurt it, but Benoit had it back by the end of the year, so it wasn't too damaging. Just a great year for that title and a sense of importance that we might not ever see again.

1998 was probably the best year for the WWE Title. HBK lost the title to Austin, who had a good first reign as WWE Champion, minus the 24 hours not being WWE Champion when Kane won the title at the King of the Ring. Also, the Rock won his first WWE Championship at the Survivor Series, and Foley did as well. As for the other titles, I'll say 2002 for the European Title and the Hardcore Title because the WWE finally got rid of them. As for the Intercontinental Title, that would be 2005, and 2010 for the Women's Title.

I-C: 2000 was a great year for the I-C Title, right up until they put the belt on Chyna at SummerSlam. I love the woman, but that killed whatever momentum the belt had. But still, I think Jericho's, Benoit's, Angle's, Val's, and even Rikishi's title reigns were solid enough to make that the best year for the belt.

World: Um...I loved Austin's in 2001, but 2000 was a good year for the belt too. Hunter's third reign restored all credibility the belt lost in 99, and Rock's 5th, despite the way he won it, was still very solid. I missed most of Angle's reign cuz I didn't have cable at the time, but from what I was able to see, it wasn't too bad. But like I said, I loved Austin's reign, so I'd say it was a toss up between 2000 and 2001.

Euro: 98, hands down.

Hardcore: Fuck it.

Women's: 2002

Cruiserweight: Right now.

Damn, I forgot the Tag Team titles and the Cruiserweight Title. 2000 was the best year for the Tag Team Titles, just because of Edge & Christian, the Hardy Boyz, and the Dudley Boyz. 3 of the best tag teams in the WWE. As for the Cruiserweight Title, that would be 2002, since the division is now growing with superstars like Noble, Kidman, Tajiri, the Hurricane, and eventually, Mysterio getting shots at the title. I won't even mention the Light Heavyweight Title, since I don't think it's had a really good year. Well, unless you count the year that Gillberg was Light Heavyweight Champion, which I believe was 1998. By the way, I'm not being serious about that last part.

Dean Malenko's run with the title in 2000 wasn't too bad, in the grand scheme of things. It was better than Jerry Lynn's, anyway.

As I recall, Deano Machino had a SWANK match with Scotty 2 Hotty that year at Backlash for the LHW belt... after that match, I honestly thought that might be the turning point for the light heavyweight/cruiserweight wrestlers in The Fed. Guess we had to wait a couple years, tho.... At least now, they seem like they're really trying.

I sense hardcore anger here. I also sense not too many ECW fans from back in the day...

Hardcore's best year? 2001 by a gnat's wing over 1998, only because I still have nightmares about the Road Dogg reign. Ah well.

Back to searching for ECW tapes.
