Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted September 8, 2002 Three on a Meat Hook.....It's Alive. Three on a Meathook was pretty tight. Based on Ed Gein, pretty much. "It's Alive.".........well, SECOND WORST MOVIE EVER The only thing that tops it is "The Cars that Ate Paris." Which is the single worst movie I have ever seen. I mean, it was so awful that it transcended "funny bad" and dove headlong into "Dude, I'm SERIOUSLY ready to turn this off, it's so bad and shitty and boring and horrible." I would rather watch Santa with Muscles twice, NAY, THRICE~! before I'd EVER sit down to 10 minutes of The Cars That Ate Paris again.
Guest Anorak Report post Posted September 8, 2002 I hate things like this because I can never pick one. I mean, every saturday we watch bad horror movies. We've done that for years so I have a huge backlog of movies to pick for a category like this. I did a review of what we picked out as our 10 favorites which you can see here. But there are just so many more than that. 2000 Maniacs. Deafula. Splatter Farm. Death by Dialogue. The Prey. The Devil Bat. Pieces. Flesh Feast. Three on a Meat Hook. Equinox. Microwave Massacre. Gargoyles. Gore-Met Zombie Chef from Hell. Maniac. The Gates of Hell. The Alligator People. Horror House on Highway 5. American Gothic. The Maze. Horror of Party Beach. Blackenstein. Bloody New Year. Catman of Paris. Clown House. It's Alive. Jack Frost. Uncle Sam. Magic. Night of the Bloody Apes. My Bloody Valentine. Mother's Day. Mortuary. Slaughterhouse Rock. Rock and Roll Nightmare. The Video Dead. How do you choose? I guess I'll pick one of the most obscure. Nekromantik. It's a German horror movie about a couple that likes to have sex with dead bodies. It's awesome. There have even been rumors that some of the scenes are more real than you'd imagine. ha ha The best scene is where the main character masturbates while he commits suicide by stabbing himself with a large butcher's knife. He of course begins to shoot blood out of his dick. Magnificent movie. I love both good and bad horror films but 'Three On A Meathook' must be the single worst film I've ever seen in my life. Its not even close to the 'so bad its good' category of horror films as its simply AWFUL on every level you could think of. On second thought it did make me laugh out loud a couple of times so it probably isn't the worst film I've ever seen in terms of entertainment, just the most ineptly made film I've ever seen. I have a bunch of favorites... "Maniac" -- Very downbeat and quite nasty but quite well made and atmospheric for an exploitation film. Disliked by a lot of people (especially some critics) for being misogynistic but its hardly as bad as stuff like Fulci's "The New York Ripper" in that regard. "Last House On The Left" -- I was a bit dissapointed when I first saw it to be perfectly honest, I'd got the impression from some critics that it was a well made film but to me it seemed to be typical 'drive-in' quality fare on some levels. To be fair though the film is still very powerful on many levels, the drawn out nature of the rape, torture, humiliation and murder featured is disturbing and to its credit there are a couple of subtle & effective scenes involving the gang as well. "Susperia" -- The stilted tone of the dubbed dialogue and variable acting is easy to ignore because technically the film is outstanding. The visuals are often amazing, the use of light and colour together with one of the scariest soundtracks ever recorded make for one of the most stylish, unique and atmospheric horror films ever made. The film also features a few of the most memorable set-pieces Argento ever put together. The ending always felt a bit abrupt and unsatisfactory to me though. "Night Of The Living Dead" "Dawn Of The Dead" "The Wicker Man" -- Edward Woodward's performance just makes the film IMO, his character's faith and stubborness is what enables the film to become a powerful and eventually quite emotive experience at the very end of the film. The other obvious strength lies in the disconcertingly weird pagan imagery which appears both bizzare and threatening at the same time. The image of Christopher Lee in his pagan dress is enough to give anybody nightmares as well. "The Witchfinder General" -- The character of Matthew Hopkins is as far removed from your regular bogeyman of the modern horror film as the historical setting is. The recreation of the time period and its brutal cruelty is achieved very well and it explores very real and very human themes of evil in terms of greed, hypocrisy, religion, superstition and sadism. "Witchfinder" has even more of a cult reputation based on the fact that it was the last film made by Michael Reeves, who was a highly regarded young horror filmmaker who died tragically young. "Meathook" was a trashy rip off of "Psycho" and wasn't inspired by Ed Gein in any direct sense, it was simply a no budget 'drive in' movie. "Psycho" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" were loosley influenced/inspired by the Gein case but it was "Deranged" and the more recent "Ed Gein" that directly tackled it head on. Guest Lethargic Report post Posted September 9, 2002 Cool... yea, I ran into a similar dilemma when I went to Hollywood Video today. It's my last "free ride" since I'm moving into college next week, and I'll actually have to pay for my rentals. I ended up trading in Time of the Apes (most shameless Planet of the Apes rip-off I've EVER seen, I was looking forward to it) for the new Stuart Gordon DTV (I guess because I never heard about it before) release Dagon. I've always wanted to see The Alligator People too... "I'll get you Alligator Man! Just like I'd get any four-legged gator!" I've seen Uncle Sam and it rules so much. I own Jack Frost on DVD but think its overrated (I like the sequel better), and even though you probably wouldn't be able to find it for rent anywhere, in I think October Something Weird Video is putting out a special edition DVD for Night of the Bloody Apes. Can't remember what the other movie is though (gotta love those double features ) I thought Dagon was pretty bad. I thought the first 30 minutes were really good but it just started getting more and more goofy after that. Netflix usually gets those Something Weird DVDs. I'm talking about the one from the 60's. Not the baby movie. In our years and years of watching bad movies every Saturday night, there have only been a few movies that were so horrible that we all voted to stop. Grim, I Zombie, Blood Sucking Freaks, Ticker, Blood & Donuts, Monkeybone, The Killer Tongue, Monster of Camp Sunshine, Story of a Junkie, Hillybillies in a Haunted House, Just Visiting, Angle of the Night and Multiple Maniacs. There were others that we wanted to stop like Teenage Cavemen 2001, Jeckyl and Hyde TV Pilot, Dr Bones, Hollywood Strangler meets the Skid Row Slasher, The Dead Hate the Living, The Eternal, Ghosts of Mars, Bones and Jack Frost 2, but we managed to get through them like we manage to get through most of them, by talking all the way through it. Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted September 9, 2002 Silent Night, Deadly Night is hitting DVD? About time! No, part 2 is coming out on DVD. No word on the original.
Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted September 9, 2002 Is that the one where they buried people up to their necks? I get Motel Hell confused with Tourist Trap. Yeah, in Motel Hell they bury them up to their necks and play wierd music. I forgot about Tourist Trap. That is a classic cult movie as well. I saw it for the first time on DVD last year, and couldn't believe how great it was. Fear Chuck Connors!

Netflix usually gets those Something Weird DVDs. Yea, I think they should've kept the townspeople's "secret" more, well, secret! They put it over big-time on the box but make it obvious from the getgo... I was expecting something more moody and mysterious, like Wicker Man. Plus the ending just didn't make sense. Netflix gets Something Weird discs? Damn, I really need to get in on that...
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted September 10, 2002 Silent Night, Deadly Night is hitting DVD? About time! No, part 2 is coming out on DVD. No word on the original. Wha? That's weird... is there some issue with the rights or something? That's what kept Anchor Bay from putting out a Chopping Mall DVD. Oh well, getting Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 would basically be like getting the original on DVD anyway. Or at least the best parts.
Guest J*ingus Report post Posted September 10, 2002 Dagon makes more sense if you've read Lovecraft's story The Shadow Over Innsmouth. But I still didn't like it. I just didn't buy that the hero would accept the final turn of events like he did, especially considering what he'd just seen done to his girlfriend. Plus, it's not too often that a movie looks like it would've been better if they'd simply had more money, but this is one of those movies.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted September 10, 2002 Budgetwise and setting-wise and however else you want to call that Dagon was great, but you're right, the ending totally killed the movie. I hope Deathbed is better. Wouldn't Dagon be worse if you read Lovecraft? Movies based on books usually are.
Guest J*ingus Report post Posted September 10, 2002 No, because it's not even trying to be a close adaption, but it relies heavily on Lovecraft's backstory about various ancient demons trying (and succeeding!) at ruling the world. Although I seriously want to see that High Priestess beauty in another film, preferably one where she's not wearing hideous fishy prosthetics.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted September 10, 2002 DUDE! Chicks with tentacles are HOT! You're right though, she is a beauty, not really particularly stand-out but I wouldn't mind seeing her in another movie.
