BLS: T.A.Z.

Metallica: Call of the Ktulu (S&M Version)

Metallica: Orion

Metallica: To Live Is To Die

Pink Floyd: Echoes (a 23 minute song with hardly any dialoge is an instrumental.)

Let's Go Away for Awhile -- Beach Boys (studio crew)

Rocking Surfer -- Beach Boys

Shut Down, Vol. 2 -- Beach Boys

Walk Don't Run -- Ventures

'Endgame' -- REM

'Blue Eurasians' -- The Kingsbury Manx

'The Light At The End Of The Tunnel (was a train coming the other way) -- Richard Hawley

'Memory Gospel' -- Moby

It may not strictly be a 'proper' instrumental (about 20 words in over 6 minutes) but Wagon's ''Broken Lines" is a brilliantly composed piece of music rather than a regular 'song' IMO.

I'd also include just about anything by Calexico.

Any of Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails instrumentals are great--all the superb musicianship without the occasionally deeeeeply whiny lyrics. "A Warm Place" is great, and any of the instrumentals off of the Still disc of And All That Could Have Been are absolutely wonderful.

I can't think of too many absolute favorite instrumentals at the moment, but Red House Painters' "Cabezon," the first track on their Ocean Beach album, is a bright, summertime-y type piece that I enjoy, and which provides a stark contrast to the moody and melencholy material that follows.

The instrumentals from And All That Could Have Been rocked, as Edwin pointed out.

My favorite is "Orion" by Metallica.

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinte Sadness (not the album, but the song that opens the first disk)

Most of the song's off Freddy King's Just Pickin' album, including "Hideaway" and "The Stumble". Pretty much anything by The Ventures (dude, surf music is totally awesome!) also makes the list, including "Walk Don't Run" of course and "Wipeout" and "Pipeline", but my favorite Ventures instrumental is actually "Ghost Riders (In the Sky)". Also, the Mahavishnu Orchestra has some good instrumental stuff but I can't remember the songs right now (I think they're all instrumental). I also recommend Ghosts and Vodka, especially "Futuristic Genitalia". Great song.

In the vein of hip-hop instrumentals, pick up instrumental versions of anything by Dan the Automator or Dr. Dre (I don't like Dre the rapper, but as a producer he's SWANK~!). There are many many others but I can't think of them right now for some reason.

I disagree, Echos is a song, it has lyrics and a chorus, it just has a very long instrumental bridge, like a free form jam that just keeps going on.

One of these days, from the same album Meddle, is more of an instrumental, online one line the title is repeated

What about Misrilou by Dick Dale, you know the 'Pulp Fiction theme'

IF EndGame isn't my favorite, it's a top 3.

that was called 'take a look around' and it wasn't instrumental, unless they did another version i don't know/care of.
