Ok, I want to know why everyone thinks the Jets will be so great this year? I just looked at the ESPN.com predictions and half of them say the Jets win the division.

Seriously, with Testaverde at QB, the Jets are going NOWHERE.

I think the Jets and Dolphins will be in the playoffs from the AFC East. The Patriots will likely be a 7-9 team this year..

I have to agree. Sure, Martin will be awesome as always, Testeverde's probably not even going to make it through the season and even if he does, somehow the Jets will screw it up like always.

IMO, Miami and NY are pretty similar which will make it a competeive race, but the Jets will find some way to throw it all to hell.

Sidenote: How's Arizona better than Seattle? It's a minor thing, but I'm just curious since the 'Hawks have an infinitely better rushing attack and when they get Dilfer back, a pretty decent passing attack as well.

Why are so many people picking the Dolphins and Jets to be so good this year? While it's obvious that picking up Williams will help Miami's running game, they need more than that to become a Super Bowl contender. I'm guessing that he gets hurt by mid-October, and all of a sudden their backfield is Fiedler handing off to Robert Edwards. Not really an intimidating duo. And I can't believe people still remember the one good year that Testaverde had rather than the many shitty years. Selective memories, I guess. I look for him to have an above-average season, with excellent perfomances in the games that they win, but piss-poor performances in the games that they lose.

All 4 AFC East teams will be near .500, with the Pats taking the division at 10-6, the Bills last at 6-10, and the Jets and Dolphins in between.

C'mon now... Edwards was/is a good back. I haven't seen him in the preseason, but if he's put some serious work into rehab, then he'll be a great back-up for Ricky.

You are telling the truth about Miami's offense, though. At times, the passing attack is ass with those mediocre recievers and Fiedler at the helm, who only shows flashes at times

I agree that Edwards WAS a good back. He ran for like 1100 yards as a rookie, but tearing up his leg in the beach game in Hawaii ruined him. Now, he's injury prone (I think it's his groin, but something has bothered him the last two preseasons ... doesn't bode well) and is coming off a three year break from real-time contact. I hope he plays well and makes enough $$$ to cover him for life, but do I think Miami has a chance if he's counted on as their #1 back. Dolphins fans better pray Williams stays healthy.

Its more or less just a hunch. The Dolphins significantly upgraded their offense with Williams (although it hasnt shown in the preseason..) and I think that as bad as everyone makes the Jets out to be with Testaverde, he has the WRs to throw to, so maybe this year he'll open it up a bit more passing.

As for the Patriots, Im not sold on Tom Brady and I dont think the defense will be able to keep them in games like last year. I could be totally wrong, but I feel as if I've seen this before (Ravens in 2000, last year..)

BUT, the Ravens last year lost their RB and one of the guys who carried the offense in 2000 (Jamal Lewis) and mismanaged the QB situation (Dilfer should have played EVERY WEEK). Plus, people should not have expected their defense to be as dominant as they were in 2000.

The Pats have pretty much everyone back from last year (coaches and players) and if Brady tanks, Damon Huard is a pretty capable backup.

Plus now, Brady has some more WR (Donald Hayes and Deion Branch) and, finally, some capable TE (Fauria, and Daniel Graham).

I think the ESPN trend this year is to follow the "underdog winners" thing that has been happening in the NFL. By saying the Jets, Fins, Bengals an teams like that are gonna win alot they are hoping that they will have been the ones to predict the suprise teams. Just like the Rams in 99, Baltimore 2000, and NE 2001.

The fact is the Jets suck, their D isnt nearly good enough losing both great cornerbacks to Houston, Green and Lyle to the Pats. Testiverde is NOT, I repeat, NOT a good NFL quarterback by any means. I'd rather have friggin Scott Zolak than Testy. This guy had ONE good year and everyone is hung up on it. Wanna know WHY he had that great year? Bill Parcells.

Miami is gonna be hurtin when Williams gets hurt, their D will carry them greatly just like the Pats. People underestimate the D of the Patriots badly I might add. I admit they may not have a high powered threatening offense like the Rams, but their Offense CAN hold on to the ball and doesnt make stupid turnovers which is all that matters. Defense wins championships in this NFL. Thats why all these people jock pittsburgh too. They dont have much of an offense with Kordel running the show but their D is REAL good...or at least WAS real good last year. We will see soon enough.

Expect Monday nighy's game to be very low scoring and most of the scoring will be done on Special Teams and Defense. NE may not be able to generate offense against Pitt but Pitt cant run on NE and that is the key to their offense.

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

You'll have to seperate the AFC East teams with a chainsaw, just like every year. I think the Pats, Dolphins, and Jets will all make the playoffs, but none will get very far.

The Steelers really do seem like the team to beat in the AFC. They have 2 good backs, a good line, and a brutal defense. That should put them over any team that isn't the Rams or 49ers.

We all know the Rams are the team in the NFC. The only spot the're worse at is right tackle, and that's a lot less than what other teams have to worry about.

here are my 2 points.

1. Don't underestimate the Raiders. You think Gannon, Rice and Brown will fall apart without Gruden? These guys are 40 years old. They don't need a fucking coach! And thier defense is good too.

2. Why does everyone think Green Bay wil be good? Here is how you should look at Green Bay. They have a tough defense, a strong line, a good runner (Green) and one of the game's best players in Farve. To me, that should equal 10 wins. Then add +1 win for Joe Johnson. That's 11 wins. Then subtract -2 wins for making Terry Glenn, King of the Bums, thier go to reciever. That's 9 wins and a first round loss.

Well they better have changed their gameplan a bit, because you KNOW every team in the NFL will try to copy what the Patriots did in the Superbowl.

We'll see if Kordell doesn't choke in the playoffs like he always does.

While its pretty clear that St. Louis will win the NFC, the AFC is a crapshoot. Miami, Pittsburgh, Oakland, New England, and Denver all have a conceivable shot at the AFC championship. The AFC should definitely be interesting this year.

Everybody not from New England is picking the Patriots to go nowhere. Life is good, because history is repeating itself less than a year later.

AMEN Cletus!

No love for Philly eh? I think theyt have a shot at taking out the Rams this year.

1. They have a GREAT defense which has been proven to be a NEED to beatr the Rams.

2. Donovan McNabb is the team's most improved player...THAT is scary. Not to mention he has alot of weapons in Thrash/Freeman/Mitchell/Lewis/Staley/Pinkston

3. Their schedule is pretty easy.

As the quintessential Pats fan I'm loving everyone thinking their going to be a joke this year. Watch and see the Pats would be hard pressed for another Super bowl win but i guarntee they make the playoffs as they are better then they were last year. I can't wait to se the Pats beet the Steelers monday night there isn't a doubt in my mind that they are going to win.

I'm willing to take that bet for ANY amount of money.

The only game they MIGHT lose is the STeelers and that's a stretch. Jets are gonna be horrible and the chiefs...ha. How can the Cheifs win when Holmes(who is overrated) is just gonna get stuffed anyways?

The Patriots may not have the best assembly of players in the NFL but IMHO they are still the best TEAM in the NFL, just like they proved last year.

They shouldn't have been in the Superbowl in the first place, considering the fumble and all, but they beat the rams, so I cheered after the fact. Didn't watch the game though. The rams were in it, which automatically puts me on superbowl strike.

A No-Win Game

By Steve Hirdt

ESPN The Magazine

I've said it before, I'll say it again. This is the time of year when every football analyst worth his chin strap is tying himself up in knots, trying to determine which team will emerge as the next Super Bowl champion.

I, on the other hand -- as someone who's spent his life studying numbers, trends and precedents -- do not see how any team can possibly win Super Bowl XXXVII. How does one reach such an outrageous conclusion? Let me count the ways:

Rule 1: No Team That Won Fewer Than Four Games in a Season Has Ever Won the Super Bowl the Next Season. This is the era of last-to-first teams, and the last three Super Bowl winners came from so far off the radar screen that none made a single appearance on Monday Night Football during its title campaign. The Rams won coming off a 4–12 season, the Ravens after 8–8 and the Patriots after 5–11, leaving no precedent for last year's doormats, the Bills (3–13), Lions (2–14) and Panthers (1–15). Nor, of course, for the Texans (0–0).

Rule 2: No Team That Won Exactly Seven Games in a Season Has Ever Won the Super Bowl the Next Season. A little-known corollary to Rule 1 that's effective in eliminating teams from Super Bowl consideration. Last year's seven-win teams -- the Browns, Titans, Giants, Cardinals, Saints and Falcons -- won't have to fret about getting the last pick in Round 1 of next year's draft.

Rule 3: No Head Coach Who Won a Super Bowl With One Team Has Ever Won a Subsequent Super Bowl With a Different Team. Many have tried, including Vince Lombardi, Hank Stram, Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson and George Seifert; none has succeeded. What does that mean for Dick Vermeil's Chiefs and Mike Holmgren's Seahawks? No soup for you!

Rule 4: No Team That Lost in the Wild-Card Round Has Ever Won the Super Bowl the Next Season. Not as well known as "The Buccaneers can't win in the cold," but just as devastating. There have been 78 wild-card games, and thus 78 losing teams, since Pete Rozelle inaugurated the concept in 1978. The first 74 have gone 0–74 at winning the Super Bowl the following year; the other four are last year's wild-card losers: the Buccaneers, Jets, 49ers and Dolphins. Sorry, guys.

Careful Dick, or someone is going to end up in tears.

Rule 5: No Team Whose Opening-Day QB Was Drafted by a Team That Had Never Before Drafted a Super Bowl-Winning QB Has Ever Won a Super Bowl. First, say that three times fast. For example: Donovan McNabb is the Eagles' opening-day quarterback this year. He was drafted by the Eagles, who have never drafted a QB who has won a Super Bowl. So, say goodbye to the Eagles, Ravens, Chargers, Vikings and Broncos. (Elway, remember, was drafted by the Colts.)

Rule 6: No Team With a Head Coach Whose Surname Starts With the Letter "C" Has Ever Won a Super Bowl. In fact, only one C-coach has even reached a Super Bowl: Bill Cowher lost to Barry Switzer in Super Bowl XXX. (Of course, you know that S-coaches have won their last five Super Bowl appearances ... but I digress.) The immutable laws of alphabetization thus eliminate Dave Campo's Cowboys, Bill Callahan's Raiders, Tom Coughlin's Jaguars and Cowher's Steelers as possible winners of Super Bowl XXXVII. (They also toss a double dose of dirt on Dom Capers' Texans, though you can get eliminated only once around here.)

Rule 7: No Team That Has Played a Regular-Season Game in Tampa's Raymond James Stadium Has Ever Won a Super Bowl That Season. Nine different teams -- including the Buccaneers, of course -- will play regular-season games in Tampa this year. Seven of them have previously been axed from a possible photo op with the commander-in-chief. The Rams and the Packers will go into the off-season cursing the NFL's scheduling formula that sent them to play at Raymond James, thereby snuffing out their chance to hoist the Lombardi.

Rule 8: No Team That Averaged Fewer Than 17 Points Per Game in a Season Has Ever Won the Super Bowl the Next Season. It doesn't matter how many points Steve Spurrier's Redskins might score in the upcoming regular season. The die was cast last year, when the Skins averaged only 16 points per game. This rule also eliminates the Bengals, who averaged only 14.1 points in 2001.

Rule 9: No Team That Allowed More Than 26 Points Per Game in a Season Has Ever Won the Super Bowl the Next Season. The Colts made it this far, but Rule 9 does to them what the training camp Turk does to undrafted free agents. It doesn't matter how well Tony Dungy's D fares this season; the horse escaped the barn when last year's Colts yielded 30.4 points per game.

Rule 10: No Team That Went From Last to First in Its Division Has Ever Won the Super Bowl the Next Season. In other words, after a big leap forward, it's tough to maintain your place and/or take it up another level. This spells curtains for the Bears and the Patriots, each of whom finished last in their respective division in 2000 before emerging as 2001 division champions.

There you have it, all wrapped up in one concise little package. Ten simple rules that, taken together, forestall the possibility of any NFL team grabbing this year's brass ring. That is, unless the unthinkable happens, and for one fortunate team, past turns out not to be prologue.

Personally, I think the Redskins can dodge rule #8, and they can change it to 15 pts instead of 17...
