The father of Mohammed Atta, the alleged ringleader of the September 11 attacks, said in an interview published yesterday that his son was still alive.

"He is hiding in a secret place so as not to be murdered by the US secret services," Mohammed el-Amir Atta, 66, told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag. He also vehemently denied that his son - believed to have flown the first plane into the World Trade Centre - had taken part in the atrocities, blaming them instead on "American Christians".

 

The interview painted a picture of a tortured man who has not come to terms with his 33-year-old son's death or with the huge crime laid at his door. He said he feared the US would try to poison him.

 

Speaking from his Cairo home, Mr Atta described hearing about the attacks after returning from a holiday on the Red Sea on the evening of September 12. "My daughter called and said she was going to drop in. She stood at the door and said 'turn on the TV'," he said. Amid images of the jets crashing into the Twin Towers, he saw his son's passport photograph.

 

"As I saw the picture of my son," he said, "I knew that he hadn't done it. My son called me the day after the attacks on September 12 at around midday. We spoke for two minutes about this and that.

 

"He didn't tell me where he was calling from. At that time neither of us knew anything about the attacks."

 

Mr Atta said he did not condone the attacks, but could understand the hijackers' motivation. "Every day our Palestinian brothers are being murdered, their houses destroyed. If their relatives were to fly a plane into the Empire State Building I couldn't hold it against them," he added.

 

Mr Atta called his son a "gentle and tender boy", who enjoyed reading history and geography books and was nicknamed "Bolbol", or nightingale, by his parents.

 

This all is kicking a can of worms open. There is evidence already out there that is saying that some of the hijackers namesakes were frauds, meaning that the people who pulled this off may have been using stolen passports. [source] Let me go though some of those.

The Saudi Arabian embassy told The Orlando Sentinel, officials were unable to verify the whereabouts of a fifth accused hijacker, Khalid Al-Mihdhar. Arab newspapers report he is still alive."

"Mr Al-Hazmi is 26 and had just returned to work at a petrochemical complex in the industrial eastern city of Yanbo after a holiday

in Saudi Arabia when the hijackers struck. He was accused of hijacking the American Airlines Flight 77 that hit the Pentagon."

A sixth person on the FBI's list, Saudi national Waleed Al Shehri, is living in Casablanca, according to an official with Royal Air Moroc, the Moroccan commercial airline. According to the unnamed official, Al-Shehri lived in Dayton Beach, Fla., where he took flight training at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Now he works for a Moroccan airline. On Sept. 22, Associated Press reported that Al-Shehri had spoken to the U.S. embassy in Morocco.

 

"His photograph was released by the FBI, and has been shown in newspapers and on television around the world. That same Mr. Al-Shehri has turned up in Morocco, proving clearly that he was not a member of the suicide attack. "

The FBI had said his "possible residence" was Delray Beach in Florida. "

This all brings up a few questions, playing devils advocate here.. let's go..

 

1) If the people have stolen idenities, isn't it right that we'd never figure out who they really are?

 

2) If you've seen the passenger lists, then you'd notice that the hijackers are not on it. Then, how did they get on the planes? Did the FBI or the Airlines carelessly omit their names, did they sneak on as attendants or pilots?

 

357 days after 9/11, alot of questions go unanswered. Disturbing.

 

But, the Atta story is very very odd. You'd think that if there was an Atta out there, his head would be put on a pike to clean up any lose strings. Still, it all seems like massive denial by Atta's father.

 

As for Atta, if he is hiding out, it's with Elvis, Andy Kauffman and Jimmy Hoffa.

I'll bet that if something went wrong, the hijackers didn't want to be known to have been on any planes on Sept 11th so maybe they used Stolen Passports?

 

Either way this is a very confusing article. But noone is trying to arrest the people who flew into buildings, they're all dead. We're trying to get the people who got them to do it...

Why must everything be a grand conspiracy with people? Maybe just maybe these are the names of the hijackers. Since when did terrorist go out of their way to hide their identities I always figured they where proud of what they where going to do. Also, the sources are very suspect.
