The CB&L Tuesday News Report

Kev's Notes:

- I'm in the process of getting some CDs with almost the entire Transformers series (US and UK) on it, so hopefully I'll be able to review them at some point.

- I'm addicted to Trading Spaces. At first it was just looking at the super-cute Paige Davis, and now I'm totally hooked. I guess I'm ready for the real sports like football and hockey to start...

- Music: Nelly Furtado, "Whoa, Nelly!" Screw Avril, listen to a Canadian pop star with talent.

Comics

DC/Wildstorm

- DC Comics is releasing Forever Maelstrom, a six-issue miniseries from Howard Chaykin, David Tischman, John Lucas and Eduardo Barreto. It looks like an interesting concept, but DC has this habit of releasing miniseries that noone gives a shit about, and this seems to be no different. I mean, if a hype article doesn't grab be, then why would I even consider buying the book? Check out the article at Newsarama.

- Walter Simonson, Jerry Ordway and P. Craig Russell will begin a 6-month run on Wonder Woman starting in January. While it's nice to see these guys get work, I find it hard to believe that newer comic book fans will give a shit. Which is probably why Adam "Master of the female form... and eat-all-u-can buffet lines" Hughes is still doing the covers. (Newsarama)

- And for you Bat-fans, Newsarama also has interviews with Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker.

Marvel

- Newsarama has more news about the Ultimates vs. Ultimate X-Men mini-series, as well as the debut of Ultimate Venom, who may or may not be a symbiote, in Ultimate Spidey.

- EiC Joe Quesada has opened his own website(joequesada.com), which is (allegedly) 100% not affiliated with Marvel. Yep. Still, it looks cool, and only time will tell if he'll do some shoot commentaries on the company he helps run. Newsarama (aka Joey and Kevin's bitch) has an interview with Mr. Q.

- Mike Deodato, Jr., best known for doing some tasty drawings of Wonder Woman, will be the regular penciller (his second go stint on a Hulk book) on Hulk as of issue #50. This should roughly coincide with Ang Lee's Hulk movie. (Newsarama)

Others

- Milton Griepp, the co-founder of Capital City Distribution, has joined the board of directors of the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund. Check out the press release at the CBLDF site.

- MGM Consumer Products announced that Avatar Press has secured the rights to produce comics based on Stargate SG-1, Species and Robocop. Comics should start shipping in 2003. They'll probably also get cancelled in 2003. I mean, Stargate can be made into an interesting property, since it's got that wormhole thing going for it. But Robocop has sucked since Frank Miller wrote Robocop 2, and Species was popular for two reasons - Natasha Henstridge's breasts. Best of luck to Avatar - you're gonna need it. (Newsarama)

- Newsarama has an interview with industry veterans Bob Layton, David Michelinie and Dick Giordano about the ironically-named Future Comics and their first title, Freemind. Comes off as shilling, actually, but hey, whatever it takes to get over, I suppose.

- You've probably heard about this, but MIT has been accused of using a comic character without permission in a press release about the establishment of the Institution of Soldier Nanotechnologies by MIT and the Pentagon. All I can say is that these guys are just not looking for money (right now) - they just want the proper credit for the artwork and maybe an apology. You'd think that'd be easy, right? (Toronto Star/Boston Globe and Newsarama. Allegdly there's also news on CNN.com, but damned if I can find it.)

- And here's an analysis of the situation from a CBLDF attorney.

- As Sassquatch mentioned, Joe Madureira's video game company has ceased operations. Check Newsarama for the story, or just link back to the post.

- Checker Book Publishing Group has acquired the rights to print collections of the Alan Moore scripted Supreme and Youngblood books. I'm not sure if anyone will really care. (Comics Continuum)

- Mile High Comics has a new newsite, called Pulse. I'm still wading through it to determine what kind of stuff to post here.

Television

- "Before it was kind of dreary. It was kind of Burtonesque and now we’ve made it sort of Schumacheresque. It was kind of dark and dingy, really muted and gray, but dark. Now, it’s brighter. The walls in the clock tower are now bright blue. Instead of back computers we have silver computers. I think the look of the show is going to be more crisp, as compared to dark and smoky". - Dini Meyer on the changes made to the Clock Tower lair that serves as the home base for the Birds of Prey. Hopefully that's as Shumacheresque as they go. (Dark Horizons)

- Newsarama has an analysis of the pilot for Birds of Prey, and it doesn't look good for the ladies. Maybe Dina Meyer should consider flashing her breasts for ratings. I mean, it's not like we haven't seen them before (assuming you saw Starship Troopers)...

- PWTorch-ish obscure reference: Bumper Robinson, who was Mondo in the hella-bad Generation X movie, is joining the cast of Sabrina. Yep, Sabrina's still on TV. (Comics Continuum)

Movies

- Latest word on the continuing saga of Warner trying to make a decent Batman and/or Superman flick has Brett Ratner (you know, the guy who directed Rush Hour 1&2) directing Superman 5 based off a script by JJ Abrams. And because you can't talk about a movie without speculating who the leading man is, rumours have put Brendan Fraser back in the role of Supes. But these are basically the same people that said that World's Finest was a go. At any rate, Ratner's probably a better choice than McG for the movie. (C.H.U.D. and Coming Attractions)

- Lauren Iungerich and Brad Follmer are working on a script for something called Superhero Summer Camp. Sorry, but if a summer camp movie doesn't have either a serial killer or Bill Murray in it, it'll suck. I am, however, willing to take that risk on a movie that features Allyson Hannigan at band camp. (C.H.U.D.)

- The video for Chad Kroeger's "Hero" was named Best Video from a Film at the MTV Video Music Awards. That's because Sum41's video from the soundtrack ("What We're All About") WASN'T EVEN NOMINATED!! I'm not a big Sum41 fan, but the song and video was TONS better. This puts Kroeger dangerously close to Bryan Adams-ville, and will inevitably lead to a three-way between Kroeger, Adams, Celine Dion to see which Canadian can create the sappiest song for a movie. Four if Lara Fabian ever sings a song in a popular movie.

- Spawn: The Movie was apparently on TBS today. U.S. TV sucks for movies with violence, swearing and/or nudity, so just rent it.

Books

- That Neil Gaiman guy won the 2002 Hugo (aka the Science Fiction Achievement) Award for best Novel for "American Gods". Congrats!! Now go get that dastardly co-owner of the Edmonton Oilers!!

Miscellaneous

- IGN DVD has a review out for Schoolhouse Rock. If you're not intruiged by this, you're likely to have been born in the 80's. Damn, I feel old...

Nice job. It's a better report than I ever did.

Some interesting things here, but nothing I actually care about, since they aren't of he X-Men variety. :)

Shame about Birds of Prey being Shumacherized, though. Reviews of the comic have always stated it was an energetic and intelligent series, and now seems to be headed towards crappy action movie fare. And that's from a guy who counts XXX and Blade among his favorite movies.

The first two issues of one of my new favorite titles, DC/Vertigo's Y: The Last Man, have sold out, and will be collected in a new reprint edition:

http://161.58.84.234/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimateb...ic&f=1&t=000098

Geoff Johns (writer JSA, Hawkman, Flash, Avengers) wrote a column for The Fourth Rail pimping it as his new favorite monthly book. I think it's a pretty cool concept, so hopefully DC will capitalize on this book's buzz. Vertigo has been undergoing a renaissance lately.

As for Birds of Prey, I'm going to watch it before passing judgment, since I'm getting too many weird, conflicting signals from reviewers. One person said that it was disappointing, especially compared to Smallville. I think Smallville is pretty horrible--the writing sucks, the characters are really stupid (especially the main one), and EVERY EPISODE IS THE SAME. So does this mean that BoP is actually *worse* than Smallville, or that the reviewer just has different tastes than myself, and is basing her judgment on different criteria than me?

Someone else (or it may have been the same person) sneeringly compared BoP to Buffy, which I love. This is very confusing, and I guess I'll have to wait until next month to see.

A Robocop comic book could possibly be cool, if done right. I don't think any franchise is beyond repair, quality-wise. I mean, what could be lamer than FREAKING Rick Springfield as Christopher Chance (in the short-lived Human Target ABC series). Yet, Peter Milligan came up with an extremely cool HT mini-series for Vertigo.

Yeah I know, the crash and burn of the Robocop series was more high-profile than the Human Target, so it's possible that the franchise has lost credibility in the public's eyes, but if word of mouth is good, then maybe it will be forgiven.

Yes, Alex (the original host of Trading Spaces) is MUCH hotter than Paige Davis. Much. Hotter. In fact, I think she blows Paige out of the water.

I don't like Paige, to be honest. She's not nearly as cute as people make her out to be, and she's too damn annoying.

Oh, and as an aside, I'd like to fuck Genevieve silly.

About the "Forever Maelstrom" mini - hasn't that been in production and / or done for YEARS now? Seriously. I have an old, old, *old* issue of Wizard magazine that features an interview with Howard Chaykin, who was planning to publish that miniseries with, I think, Malibu Comics. Before that company went and got bought up by Marvel. This was like, at LEAST 5 years ago, maybe more.

Ah yes, Alex was her name.

Also, the carpenter (the female one), Amy-Wynne or whatever her name is is also VERY attractive, as is Genevieve.

Well, I DID say that Paige was super-cute, not hot. This is much in the same way that Gwen Stefani is cute, but not hot.

Amy Wynn is pretty good looking as well (I guess you'd need to be if you're the counterpart to Ty, who the ladies seem to love.

I was in NYC from Fri-Sun, and my gf vetoed my idea of trying to find Gen's office (gg Designs or something similar, can't remember, but it's on the website). I'll probably talk about my trip in the next update...
