"What in the hell were they thinking"

I was watching this special on AMC about musical movies of the 70's and well the late 70's had some shitty musical movie so i got to thinking. There's just some movies that are such bad ideas that it's unbelievable that they actually got made.

So i'd like to ask all of you guys to list your personal "what the hell were they thinking" movies.

Two of the worse from that special were Xanadu and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Xanadu

40's big band music + roller skating + disco music + some animation = a big mess

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

It's the Bee Gees starring in a movie based on a Beatles record. The Bee Gees sing Beatles songs and it appears the movie consists of a bunch scenes that seem to have nothing to do with each other based around the songs. Riiiight

Grease 2 - the original was great, why did they have to piss on the legacy?

Airplane 2 - see above

Last year there was some movie centered around karoake. I think it was called Duets. How in the hell does crap like that get made?

Oh shit... how could I ever forget Kaazam? I can excuse Blue Chips because that was a pretty decent movie, but Kaazam was a complete farce.

An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn. Doesn't ring a bell? Good. This film ranks among the most ill-begotten, woefully misconcieved, and all around terrible pieces of shit to be made by people who allegedly have talent. Perhaps the worst film I have ever seen, and no, I am NOT using hyperbole.

Batman & Robin kinda defines the "What the hell were they thinking?" statement to a T. There isn't one single moment where I can look at anything on the screen and think, "Ah, now THIS was a good/nice/smart idea".

EDIT: That goes double for "Street Fighter".

Holy shit, that movie sounds great. Seriously, it sounds like it could be bad movie heaven. Maybe I'll pick up the DVD.

It's really perversely entertaining. Unlike say, Batman & Robin which isn't entertaining in any context except when "entertaining" follows the word not.

It got made because it was really good. Just because it's set around karaoke doesn't affect the story any.

Dude, no offense, but I'm sure SOMEBODY even liked Heaven's Gate....

Honestly, I only saw a few minutes of it and it looked like dreck. I've also heard more than one person who have seen the entire movie say it wasnt very good. This sort of thing is all subjective, of course.

Speed 2. Trying to recreate the whole bus thing with a freaking boat was just stupid.

I'd say that probably the worst idea I've ever seen was the original Caligula. Combine footage of big-name actors doing a (really shitty) historical drama with some hardcore porn starring nobodies? And somehow make it one of the worst fucking movies of all time along the way? Whoopee.

Nothing can touch the sheer "Whatthefuck?"-itude of Freddy Got Fingered. I mean, I've never seen so many people walk out of a movie disgusted with themselves for even buying a ticket to the damn thing.

And you could argue that Malcolm McDowell's career never recovered from it. That Helen Mirren, John Gielgud, etc. managed to emerge unscathed is a miracle.

I've never seen the third Major League. I didn't even know there was a third installment, but the first one was a mistake in itself.

Noooo!!!!! Let's not go there. The 3rd was just beyond unwatchable. The first two are two of my all time favorite movies. Pure hilarity.

You know i've heard so much bashing of Freddy Got Fingered that it's now near the top of my "i must see this movie" list.

And the fact that the movie gets bashed so much means i will probably love it.

Any movie shown on Mystery Sciene Theater 3000 DEFINTALEY should be put on this list.

Most of the movies on MST don't really belong in the "what the hell were they thinking" genre. Most of the MST movies were just very cheap and very bad movies with bad actors and writing.

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank is one of the "wthwtt" movies seen on MST.

The first LOTR movie shouldn't have been made. It was the worst shit I've ever seen. If you don't believe me, watch it yourself.
