Guest Blackston Report post Posted September 4, 2002 There are almost no games of national significance this week, so I am just going to go over some of the better looking ones. National game of the week: Miami (Fl) (1-0) at Florida (1-0): Synopsis: The lone highlight of the week, this game would have the complete attention of the nation, no matter what week the game was played. Florida is fresh off of stomping the Blazers of UAB, while the Hurricanes pummeled on a hapless Florida A&M. I'm looking for both teams to come out and play some high-octane football. I just am left wondering if the huge home-field advantage provided by the Swamp will be enough to help the Gators overcome some of their talent deficiencies. I am wondering if Zook will have the ability to overcome the crazy amount of talent that is prevelant at Miami. If the Visor were still around at Florida, I would take the Gators against the spread in this one, no question... But I am not quite as high on Zook. I'll take the 'Canes in this one... The line: Florida by 2 My pick: Miami by 10 Alabama (1-0) at Oklahoma (1-0) Synopsis: This game would have been something to watch in the '70's, but both teams have fallen on hard times in the recent past. Oklahoma has refound it's glory, while the Crimson Tide always appear to be on the cusp of being a national player, before they fall back into the field again. Recently, the Tide were hit by severe scholarship restrictions, quite possibly the worst penalty the NCAA could hand out short of the Death Penalty. Nothing illustrates the fall of 'Bama more then the fact that their fans were celebrating a squeaker of a victory against Middle Tennessee State (a perfectly fine mid-major BTW, the Tide of old would have eaten them for lunch, though). Oklahoma has some kinks that they need to work out too, as Tulsa held the Sooners to only a field goal in the first half of play (OU went on to obliterate Tulsa in the second half). I think that OU will have worked over their problems in practice this week, and will come out and throttle the Tide. The line: Oklahoma by 13 My pick: Oklahoma by 28 Purdue (1-0) at Notre Dame(1-0): Synopsis: Notre Dame gets another quality team this weekend, but one that should prove to be no match for the Fighting Irish. Purdue has been down in recent years, and Notre Dame appears to be on the verge of resurgence under the watchful eye of Tyrone Willingham. This game should be a good test for where Notre Dame actually is this season, as Bob Davie always had a knack for losing all of his Big Ten games. I like the Irish in this one, but look for the Wolverines to thrash the Irish next weekend. The line: Notre Dame by 6 My pick: Notre Dame by 13 I hope that you all have a good weekend, and that all of your favorite teams win. I'll go back to doing more games when there are more games that pique my interest. Go Buckeyes. Beat the Flashes.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted September 4, 2002 They're favoring Florida over Miami? Well, when I think about it, they may be right, but I'd call that one a Pick 'Em. GO CANES! BEAT FLORIDA!!! (not a Miami fan, I just hate Florida and want Tennessee to have an easy time in the SEC East) Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted September 4, 2002 I think Miami is going to win. Can't give you a reason, all I ask is that it's a good game and it gets televised on the West Coast. UCLA finally goes into action, and we have a tough opponent - the Colorado State Rams. Strangely, CSU is ranked below Colorado despite beating them. Anyway, should be a good game. It's a good test for UCLA to see how they will do this season...if they keep it close or win they should be all right, if not then Toledo's head will roll. Another UCLA player got charged with a misdemeanor...when did UCLA become the Dallas Cowboys? Picks: Miami over Florida, Oklahoma over Alabama, Notre Dame over Purdue, Kent State over OSU...kidding. I think the only thing to watch in that game is how many touchodowns Clarett piles up.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted September 4, 2002 It will be interesting to see how Notre Dame does this week against an opponent with an offense. Did anyone else see where Las Vegas police think the lights where purposely cut, during the Wisconsin/UNLV. The rule is that bets only count with under 5:00 left, the game had 7:00. All the Wisconsin fans but money on Wisconsin to cover and they where well on there to doing so. If this story turns out to be true (it wouldn't suprise me) how low can you go. Guest Blackston Report post Posted September 5, 2002 I heard something along those lines too, but I was under the impression that Vegas couldn't lay wagers on games played by UNLV or University of Nevada-Reno. That would be pretty shady though, if that were the case. I'm really looking forward to the Notre Dame game, because it will tell me whether or not Notre Dame is on its' way back to being a national player. As a Buckeye fan, I sort of like seeing the Irish down a bit, because of the fierce recruiting wars that go on between the two schools... but I understand that Notre Dame isn't going to be down forever. Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted September 5, 2002 Does anyone know if ESPN has a Thursday night game this week? They have one Friday - Hawaii vs. BYU, this time in Provo. I'm looking forward to seeing this one, and in particular how BYU comes out, seeing as how Hawaii knocked BYU completely out of BCS contention last year. Should eb a great offensive showcase, with both teams moving up and down the field at will. Whichever defense can hold the other offense to, say, under 45 points will win. I think BYU will win this one, they have the home crowd and revenge on their minds.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted September 5, 2002 Never mind about why there is no Thursday night football - there is football, but it's the 49ers/Giants game.
Guest Blackston Report post Posted September 5, 2002 There IS a college football game tonight, but I doubt it will be televised at all. Oregon State is playing at Temple.
Guest Leena Report post Posted September 5, 2002 Why is Florida favored in that game, when everyone thinks Miami is going to win? I know it's at the swamp, but Miami is still a powerhouse, and I pick Miami by 20+.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Wanted to bump this in prep for tomorrow's games. Anyway, BYU beat Hawaii 35-32, and actually both teams found it easier running the ball than passing it. BYU has some new tradition where the fans are throwing tortillas on the field after every touchdown...this is their way of hoping BYU gets to the Fiesta Bowl (kinda like when the Rose Bowl teams get roses). Pretty funny to see these tortillas flying in when they're trying to line up the extra point. Ah, I love long weekends of football, from Thursday to Monday. Good luck to everyone's teams this weekend.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Here's a question for everyone. Is it tme for Nebraska to dump the Option. They don't have to become Florida, but how about bringing in a QB that's capable of throwing it down field. The last few years Nebraska's been a good team, and they did make it too the Rose Bowl but they where completley outmatched with their prehistoric style of offense. Does Nebraska have to join the millenium in order to return to its past dominance.
Guest Grenouille Report post Posted September 7, 2002 There's about 15-20 games on various cable channels today here in the north east and not a one of them has the Florida-Miami game. So how much is the ESPN game plan?
Guest hardyz1 Report post Posted September 7, 2002 I despise working 4-9 on Saturdays with no TV at the workplace. Not to mention 2-9 every other Sunday. GO IRISH!
Guest Blackston Report post Posted September 7, 2002 A few points: I'm pretty sure that ESPN is carrying Florida-Miami nationally. If you get ESPN, you will get the Canes-Gators game, no question. Notre Dame: If they manage to get through Purdue, has got to be the luckiest team that I have ever seen in my life. Purdue receiver Lowe caught an easy screen pass with lots of yardage in front of him, when he stumbled, fell, and fumbled the football in a horrific display of ineptitude. Notre Dame picked up the fumble and returned it for fifty yards for a touchdown. Then on the ensuing kickoff Purdue muffed the kick, picked it up on the Purdue two, got stood up on the three and coughed the ball up to the waiting Irish defender who fell into the endzone. Honestly, I have never seen a team self-destruct quite like that before. Nebraska: If they can keep winning, then why change their system? I agree that Nebraska looked pretty bad against the 'Canes and Buffs, but I think that the Husker defense is to blame. If Nebraska's defense can hold off either offense, then the option attack would be able to work. As it stood, the defense took Nebraska out of those games before their offense could take controll of the game. The option works wonders when it is used in a ball-control setting, but it is just not really good when having to make up lots of ground quickly... That is the main drawback to that style of offense. Ohio State: Go Bucks!

Guest Blackston Report post Posted September 7, 2002 That's right. I knew it was a national game... The rest of the U.S. Open is going to be played on the USA network.
Guest Mattdotcom Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Mattdotcom & Family live in Alabama, so take this with a grain of salt. We're partial to the Tide. That fumble in the Alabama/Oklahoma game looked like bullshit to us, but then again, my dad is the Jim Ross of the Crimson Tide. And what the hell is that supid-ass wagon? I just want to beat the spread. Good game so far, but the refs are screwing us over every game. We deserve most penalties we get, but Oklahoma has deserved three that went uncalled. Little things like holding, but still.
Guest Blackston Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Watching the Florida-Miami game. Holy shit, this crowd is intense! I can't even hear the broadcasters hardly. Florida just blocked a punt, knocking on the door for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead.
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Man... the Bama/OU game has me marking out now. The Tide has OWNED the second half and it looks liek eveyrone is has kicked it up another notch. While would suck if we lost, I'm still proud of my team for taking it to the #3 team in the nation. Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted September 8, 2002 Okay, I knew Miami would make Florida their bitch, regardless of where they played(even in space, with no air, Miami would still stay alive longer than Florida). #1 v. #6 isn't really close in my mind. To me, only one of the top four can really have a realistic chance of defeating #1. The Alabama/Oklahoma game was turned off by me when it looked like Oklahoma was running away with it, but then when I came back, Alabama was in the lead and Tennessee advancing in the rankings went through my head. Alabama was still charging late in the game, but damn did Oklahoma luck out. I predict they'll drop a spot. My boys just got a safety on MTSU, and seem to be playing at half-speed, conserving themselves for the biggie against Florida in two weeks. Solid plan, sez I. We want to be in our best shape to FUCK FLORIDA UP. Fo Vols, Kotzenjunge
