Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 5, 2002 Here are the brackets as of 8 pm, I'll edit them once I can: Lleyton Hewitt vs. Andre Agassi Sampras or Roddick vs. Gonzalez or Schalken Serena Williams vs. Lindsay Davenport Amelie Mauresmo vs. Venus Williams -- I think Lleyton will beat either one of the semi-finalists. If Roddick wins, he'll beat Gonzalez or Schalken, who is only here because Phillippoussis blew his knee out in the first round and retired the match. If Sampras beats Roddick he'll beat Schalken and maybe Gonzalez. Serena over Davenport, 3 sets. Venus and Mauresmo is going to be close, I think.

Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 5, 2002 Venus-Serena = worst matches EVER. Evert-Navratilova it is not. This sibling rivalry is about as fun to watch as the Undertaker-Kane one from WWF. I guess the reason I hate the Williamses is because it's bullshit to looks at their routes and see all the matches leading up to the final. You'llwatch them totally destroy all these good players like Davenport, Seles, Henin, Mauresmo, and so forth, but when you get to the final after the first six matches, you're treated to the XFL of tennis. I'm just really hoping that Davenport and Mauresmo can dig into some well of untapped (I could make a joke there) talent and send the Williamses home, but I doubt it. Guest Zero_Cool Report post Posted September 5, 2002 Sampras vs. Hewitt in the finals...Sampras gets that last hurrah. Venus vs. Serena in the finals...only redeeming thing will be if Serena wears the catsuit.
Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 5, 2002 I'm getting tired of Sampras now. I think a Roddick-Hewitt final could pull big ratings, though I hate Roddick. And not even the catsuit can save us from a Williams-Williams cavalcade of errors. Not even La Parka could save THAT.
Guest Leena Report post Posted September 5, 2002 Gonzalez lost Oh well. Watch for him next year, though. I'd love to see Pete win the Open. I've watched him all my life, and I'm a fan of his. I see Pete getting to the final now, but there's no way he could get past Hewitt. The Williams' matches against each other are sad. I will say they have gotten somewhat better, their match at the French was OK. I just hope Richard has finally stopped telling them to fix their matches, which was obviously happening before. Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Schalken is growing on me, but Phillippoussis would've beaten him in the opening round, if the Scud's knee didn't screw up Schalken would NOT be there. Anyway, Sampras over Roddick, Hewitt over Schalken, Hewitt over Sampras.
Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Well I guess that's it for the Open on USA for the year. I think CBS is carrying things the rest of the way.

The only way it'd be more scripted is if Venus clocked Serena with a STEEL chair during the trophy presentation... OK, it's down to the final four on both sides. I'll actually BE in NYC this weekend, but it's doubtful that I can get decent seats at the Open at this point. Anyways, Hewitt beats Agassi in 4, Schalken beats Sampras in 5. Hewitt wins the finals in 4 Davenport beats Serena in 3, Venus beats Mauresmo in 2, Venus beats Davenport in 3 in the finals.
Guest TJH Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Schalken Vs Sampras- Sampras Agassi Vs Hewitt- Hewitt Sampras Vs Hewitt- Sampras (I hope, even though I'm an Aussie) Serena Vs Davenport- Serena Mauresmo Vs Venus- Mauresmo Mauresmo Vs Serena- Serena
Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Is it safe to say Richard Williams is a useless prick that's screwing over women's tennis with these Venus-Serena finals? I just remembered that Schalken came pretty close to knocking Hewitt out of Wimbledon. Just for kicks let's compare the semis from Wimbledon with the Open. We had Hewitt over Henman (#1 Aussie defeats overrated British guy) and this time Hewitt vs. Agassi (#1 Aussie against overrated American guy) Nalbandian over Malisse (Low-ranked player gets lucky in the first round and reaches the finals) and now Schalken-Sampras (Low-ranked player gets lucky in the first round and reaches the semis) If the Williamses were switched I could compare but it's too ahrd so I'm going to do something else. Guest Leena Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Richard Williams may be a prick, but he's done something right to make the undisputed Top 2 women in tennis. If Pete plays well, he'll easily beat Schalken. Other than a fairly good backhand, all Schalken does is keep the ball flat, and in the court, which makes him very consistent. Hewitt made a bunch of errors in the 2nd and 3rd set, which is what made the match with Schalken close. Lleyton was in control the entire way. Schalken has been lucky like Nalbandian. Kuerten's backhand was way off in their match, and he struggled just to put the ball in the court. Gonzalez's timing wasn't perfect on a windy day. Good play will always beat a player like Schalken. Guest steelbell97 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 I like Pete Sampras chances to win this. Schalken had a tough 5 set match in the quarterfinals and Pete had an hour and a half in his match. I do not see a let down from Sampras in the semifinals.
Guest pochorenella Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Am I the only Agassi fan here? I've been for quite some time now and I like his chances to win, even though he hasn't beaten Hewitt for quite a while, but if he concentrates and lowers his unforced errors margin I believe he might take it. And the way Sampras manhandled Roddick makes me think of an all-american Final match (and watch the ratings go through the roof on sunday!). Imagine a repeat of their classic semi-finals match from last year, maybe their finest match ever (for those who didn't watch it, four sets, four tie-breakers, no breaks at all, Pete took it home). Guest hardyz1 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 I, too, am hoping for a Sampras/Agassi final. As I type this, Venus beat Mauresmo in 3 sets, and Serena leads Lindsay 3-1 in the first set. Looks like another all Horseface final coming up.
Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Yep! Bullshit, Venus should NOT have won that. There were so many miscalls in Venus's favor...
Guest Leena Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Just watching the match now, and you're right. A few of those calls in the 3rd set were unreal. I know the home country player will get calls sometimes, but this was just blatant. Truly sad to rob someone of a match like that. Mauresmo in the final would have made it much more interesting. The crowd was really behind her, which is quite impressive considering the circumstances. To add fuel to the fire.. Oracene Williams (their mother) is now complaining that nobody wants to see her daughters in the final, because they're black. The ol' Racism card being played again. Well, if you didn't tell your daughters to tank matches against each other.. If you didn't tell Venus to default against Serena 5 minutes prior to their match in Miami, pissing off the entire crowd.. If they did try their best against each other.. and (I know it's not their fault) facing each other in lackluster matches every month.. people don't want to see it. Sorry, end rant. I know the home country player will get calls sometimes, but this was just blatant. Truly sad to rob someone of a match like that. Yeah, those were awful. And Mauresmo didn't even bother challenging the blatantly false calls because the umpire would've just blown her off anyway. Like I said, there are tons of robberies in New York but this one had 20,000 people cheering it on. Mauresmo in the final would have made it much more interesting. The crowd was really behind her, which is quite impressive considering the circumstances. Yeah I heard a few "allez Amelie!" yells there. It would've been interesting if she came in holding upsets over Clijsters, Capriati, and Venus. Oracene Williams (their mother) is now complaining that nobody wants to see her daughters in the final, because they're black. Oracene? Isn't that some dinosaur era? Pleistocene, Pliocene, Oracene...maybe it's Latin for "woman with blonde Afro that gets beaten by her husband." I don't want to see her daughters in the final because when they're in the final those matches are just hideous, and "Underrated #10 seed defeats top 3 Americans en route to the championship" makes a better success story than "it's another damn Williams match." Y'know, it's hard to call this one, they're 5-5 right now, I don't know which one Daddy'll pick.
