Who is the better wrestler?

Recommended Posts

Guest RazorxEDGE

For the record, my vote goes to Bret.

Bret was just...the man.

J.R. can put Benoit over as the best technical wrestler in WWE history, but in my eyes it was Bret. Bret has also had many more classic matches than Benoit.

As far as charisma goes, it's not even close. There will never be another Hitman. Bret, in my opinion, just personified what it meant to be a championship-caliber wrestler. He had the aura of a world heavyweight champion, especially when he had gold around his waist.

bret hart.

for close to 15 years bret was one of the top two wrestlers in the world as far as skills go and he was always over with the fans. while chris benoit has had his share of excellant matches his track record can't even come close to bret hart's.

Well....Bret Hart has an aura around him and was a great wrestler. Hell, his catchpharse wasn't to sell t-shirts, he was the best.

On the other hand, Benoit is the son of fucking god. So thats points.

Bret could carry all the slugs from 1995 to *** to ***** matches with ease without killing himself in the process(I am looking at YOU Foley and HBK).

Benoit could single handing prevent a WCW PPV from being worst ever by having a **** match that means nothing but pops the crowd.

Bret's downside was his last few years and the fact he got too formulaic.

Benoit's downside was that he stole the wife of the headbooker and got shitted on as a result.

So I giving the nod to Benoit, since i like his work style better.

Well, its hard to say.

Bret was stuck in the WWF and was hampered by their style and the fact he had to wrestle guys like Issac Yankem. Meanwhile, Benoit was having a sting of classic matches over in Japan.

hmmmm.

I would say Benoit (as he is a pure wrestling machine, and can work any style of wrestling, unlike "The Hitman") but, Bret carried many a useless worker (Diesel etc.) to very good matches so i'll say...

Bret.

Benoit's greatest matches make Bret's greatest matches look like childs play.

Bret is probably my number 6 US worker of all time, behind Flair, Windham, Eaton, Tommy Rogers, and Benoit.

I would put Bret ahead of Eaton and Rogers definately. I would only say Bret was better than Benoit due to the fact he had so many good matches in the WWF, which was shit for match quality.

I'll say Bret, because Bret had a way of connecting with the fans through his ring work alone that Benoit just doesn't seem to possess.

Dynamite Kid is god. Bret Hart owes his career to Dynamite kid. Benoit is the carbon copy clone of Dynamite Kid, along with Liger. Thus Benoit is the son of God.

Benoit.

The topic's title is "Who is the better wrestler?" so I'll go with Benoit.

You can talk for hours about how Bret had so much more charisma than Benoit, and it'd be true. The thing is, this topic is about wrestling, not charisma. Bret may be the better preformer, but I doubt that he could work in the many styles Benoit has shown himself to be extremely efficient in over the years.

So basically, Benoit.

"for close to 15 years bret was one of the top two wrestlers in the world"

I love Bret as much as the next guy but since when did the United States become the only land mass on the planet earth? Or were those not the same 15 years I was watching that you happend to stumble upon?

"while chris benoit has had his share of excellant matches his track record can't even come close to bret hart's."

Actually if you look at purely track record (ergo body of work) Benoit hands Bret's ass when it comes to sheer volume and variety of good to great matches throughout their respective careers. Bret's pluses come with fitting the role of champ admirably at a relatively high profile whereas Benoit was something of a journeyman.

"Dynamite Kid is god. Bret Hart owes his career to Dynamite kid. Benoit is the carbon copy clone of Dynamite Kid, along with Liger. Thus Benoit is the son of God."

Does that make Kikuchi Job? Get it? :)

i haven't seen any of benoit's japan matches, so i can't really say. i also think longevity plays a big part, & we haven't gotten a chance to see how long benoit's career lasts & how long he can be this good. one of the main reasons i think bret was such a great wrestler is that he was churning out ****+ matches in his forties, & had what probably ended up being his best run AFTER he turned 40. only steamboat & flair can make a similar claim. so i don't think it's fair to judge benoit by that, since he's only...34? 35?

sadly, looking at the way he wrestles now, i seriously doubt he'll be wrestling after he's 38 or 39. but that's just an assumption.

I'd take Bret Hart as well. He had unreal subtle charisma that made every kid go googoo-gaga over him, as well as statisfying the pople who like wrestling. Bret Hart was capable of telling an absolutly wicked story. In my opinion, Bret has been apart of the two best matches in WWF history. With Austin from Survivor Series and Owen from Wrestlemania 10.

As a side note, I watched the WM10 match with Owen and it was so good that it made me sad. Owen showed he was a helluva star in the making. If only he was still with us during Jericho, Benoit, Guerrero, and Angle's run with the company. He would have been a World Champion and could have easily surpassed Bret's status. It may seem ludacris now, but that match is sooooo awesome, and he was never really given another chance to shine in any other fued.

Too bad for the Hart Family Curse - they were the best thing to ever happen to the industry

Benoit, by a pretty large margin. If you take a look at all the slugs Hart carried in the WWF, they pale in comparison to the biggest slug of all time- Gedo. Benoit carried his bitch ass to a **** match at J-Cup 95, and for that and that reason only, he's better.

Seriously though, Benoit is more intense in the ring, has a better moveset and has a much more diverse style. The guy surpassed Bret a long time ago. His Japan work embarasses anything done by Bret in the WWF.

Yes, but Japan is a serious wrestling environment. American wrestling tends to be guys in tights who just happen to wrestle.

Bret, for all he's done..and being a bright spot in a fed that could've cared less about the small guys.

Shiro, doesn't that some up both Benoit's WCW and WWF runs, or did you do that on purpose?

Seriously, is it just me or does everyone develope a huge constipation of the brain when reffering to Benoit's work that forces them to conclude that Japan and America are the only places that have wrestling? What of the Lucha Libre work? Part of the reason Benoit has had such a great career is because he was able to adjust to nearly any style thrown at him, be it leading the NJ Junior division as the top foreigner, fighting Kevin Sullivan in a bathroom, or working a very hot program with Villano III. Benoit had a large body of work with a wide variety of opponents in tons of styles and worked well with pretty much all of them, so being in the proper environment was never really an issue.

It's not that I forget Lucha, it's that I don't know enough about it to make an infomed statement, so I keep my mouth shut.

I've seen enough Japanese and American wrestling to at least know a dew things.

Benoit's the better worker, but Bret's the better total package by far, IMO.

Bret had a **** match on almost every WWF PPV he wrestled on. There were exceptions of course, but for the most part, he was king of the WWF in terms of match quality. His style is just much lower impact than Benoit's which I think gives Benoit the edge in terms of pure worker. Bret could adapt, too, however, and I think people forget that. Bret did good work with guys like Tiger Mask as well. Benoit has more Japanese experience though, so it's hard to call based on that. Not to mention the fact they were both trained by the same person.

Seriously, anyone who's seen the matches knows that Benoit wins by a considerable portion, simply because he had larger portion of good matches.

Oh, you were trying to be clever. Funny, that.
