Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 As reported Jose Theodore has signed with the Montreal Canadiens for 3 years for 16.5 million dollars. Lets just not hope he is another Jim Carey
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted September 6, 2002 For the Canadiens' sake,I agree.Theodore makes them a playoff team. And that's not even a guarantee.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Was there ever any question as to whether or not he was staying? The Canadiens wouldn't have let the league MVP just leave, they're having enough trouble just bringing back the fans that they'd lost over the past few years. Letting the best goalie in the league just walk away for only draft picks wouldn't have helped matters at all. Now, Calgary needs to get it's shit together and sign up Iginla. Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 The Senators haven't been very busy. All they keep sending me Emails for is invitations to charity golf events.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 6, 2002 They need money bad enough that they're holding golf events for themselves? That's just sad.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 ahh poor jim carey. haven't heard that name in awhile. anyway, I think it was a smart idea for the habs to lock up theodore and hopefully he'll be able to help turn that team around.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Someone needs to do a timeline on Jim Carey's career. I still can't believe how someone who played so awesome in his first few years could go down the drain so fast. The guy couldn't even win a play-off game if his life depended on it.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 It was only one year wasn't it? He had his amazing year and then stunk it up right after that didn't he?
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 6, 2002 I'm pretty sure he won the Vezina in his second or third year in the league in addition to the one he won in his rookie year.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Carey won it in 1996 which was his second year (I looked it up). His last transaction in the NHL was when he was signed as free agent by the St. Louis Blues on March 1, 1999.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Ok, I guess he didn't win the Vezina in his first year, but he did win the Calder.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 He finished second in voting for the Calder in 94-95.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 6, 2002 I was sure he won it. Oh well, it was a long time ago, I guess I forgot.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Everything you ever wanted to know about Jim Carey ... http://ucsu.colorado.edu/~norrisdt/bio/carey.html "The puck stops here, literally. In just his second season, Jim Carey, 22, won the Vezina Trophy; he was 35-9 [sic, he was actually 35-24-9] backstopping a low-scoring team, with a 2.26 goals-against average and a league-leading nine shutouts (he has 13 in his 13-month NHL career). He was third in the Vezina balloting in his rookie season." (The Sporting News Hockey Yearbook 1996-97, p. 76)
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Of course, I'm a fucking idiot. His rookie year was the lockout season, and Forsberg won it that year. However, the 'Net Detective' did finish ahead of Paul Kariya in the voting.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Bringing the thread back to the original post ... it seems that Montreal is the only team in their division that hasn't taken a step back. The B's lost Guerin, Toronto lost CuJo, the Sens haven't added much, and Buffalo is more concerned with management strife. Looks like it might be a good year to be a fan in Montreal. Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 If the Habs can build off of what they did last year and maybe make a couple of new addititions to the team then they will be top contenders in their division. anyone else feel like looking up jim carey and seeing what he is up to these days? Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Ah, he's probably got some job helping coach a junior team somewhere. Back to the original topic, while the Habs haven't gotten worse, they really haven't improved that much, either. And, really, the only place where Toronto took a step back in was between the pipes.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Yes, the Leafs only took a step back in goal, but going from CuJo to Belfour/Kidd will probably cost them 5-10 pts. this year in the standings ... they'll probably win the division, but as the #3 seed. The Sens, B's and Habs will all finish somewhere between the #5 and 10 seed, with at least one of the three not making the playoffs. (and as much as it pisses me off, it's most likely the Bruins that will be on the outside looking in) The Sabres should be the cellar dweller in the division. Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted September 6, 2002 I can see the Northeast division being one of the toughest division of all of them (and it is, almost every team is equal this year.) Ottawa has a well balanced team Toronto has the offence and toughness, but the bad defence and sub-par goaltending is going to hurt them Boston lost in size, and in scoring, really the weakest in the group Montreal: Solid goaltending and powerplay. Offence is average, but needs help on defence. Buffalo: Actually I think this is the sleeper team of the year, and really going to be a threat this season, despite the lack of stars. Gotta start somewhere
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted September 7, 2002 It's weird. I like both the Bruins and the Sens, so I'm rooting for two teams in the same division. Baron, I think Buffalo has to eventually come together, as they haven't really added anyone, so it's pretty much the same team. Will they start out like the Expos in baseball, though? You know, start good, make some trades and then suck? The Sens...I have no idea what the fuck they are doing. They traded McEachern for a loser defenceman, traded Muckalt (a decent 3rd or 4th line guy) and really haven't added anything or anyone. The only other thing they've done is lock up Bonk and Alfredsson. That's very good. And TC, the golf things were Todd White Charity games. They have also sent me an email trying to get season tickets. Obviously, they just send the season tickets emails to everyone, as it would be pretty hard for me to go to even 1 Sens home game. Seeing as how I live in Florida, and all.

They are paying Todd White enough money so that he has to go out and raise funds by conning people into playing golf? That's worse than what I thought before. Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Bah. Enough about the East. What about the West?
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Detroit, Colorado, San Jose will dominate the west, with the rest behind them like always
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Detroit, Colorado, San Jose will dominate the west, with the rest behind them like always I'd include Dallas in the list of teams that will dominate the West. I know they sucked last year, but they got rid of Hitchcock (which should help) and added a few players, including Guerin, to an already deep team. And a few of the other teams improved as well ... Phoenix got stronger by adding Amonte, Chicago added Fleury, etc. And Vancouver will probably play better just by what they learned last year in the playoffs against the Wings. One of the Big 4 will still win the West, but it will be closer than it normally is.
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted September 7, 2002 I'd like to see San Jose do well this year, as they've been getting better with each passing year. Phoenix definetly took a step in the right direction with the addition of Amonte. Chicago with Fleury was a stupid move. Chicago won't make the playoffs. Dallas can burn in hell with the addition of Guerin, as far as I'm concerned. Damn Stars. I hope detroit doesn't go to the finals again. I'd like to see Ottawa v. San Jose. I think that would be a great series [/wishful thinking]
Guest Phr33k Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Well, as was suggested, the Flames signed Iginla yesterday to a 2-year, 13-million dollar contract. I'm happy with both goings-on, seeing as the Habs and Flames are the two teams I cheer for. Who said Montreal needed turning around? They were already on the upswing, and this is just the thing they needed to stay that way. I'm picking them for 2nd in the division.
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Montreal isn't that deep with talent though are they? I know they have a couple of decent lines but Audette and Czerkawski really aren't anything special without a playmaker and Koivu hasn't played anything close to a full season since his rookie year, has he? If Theodore gets hurt or has a down year,Montreal is fairly done.
Guest Phr33k Report post Posted September 8, 2002 I think that they are quite deep on the talent level. Many Habs could step it up if someone goes down with injury. All they need is to dump Patrice Brisebois. He's a boon to the entire team, and they've got too much defense to justify keeping him around for $4 mil a year.
