Plays that are ingrained in your mind

Recommended Posts

Guest treble charged

Every sports fan has a play that plays over and over in their head, be it a home run, hail mary, or desperation three pointer.

For me, it would have to be Joe Carter's World Series winning home run in 1993 against Philadelphia. Now, I was 10 years old at that time, yet I can remember basically everything that happened on that play. I remember seeing the ball sail over the left field fence, and seeing Pete Incavglia (sp?) turn around with his head down as he realized that his team had just lost the Series, and I can remember the announcer saying vividly, 'The winners, and still World Series' champions, the Toronto Blue Jays.'

Unfortunately, the Jays haven't given me many memorable moments since then (the only one I can think of is Carlos Delgado's homer off of Pedro Martinez in 2000, a game in which the Jays won and put them in first place for nearly a month), and the Leafs, well, you know. Anyway, hockey isn't conducive to 'big' plays like other sports (such as baseball or football) are.

Anyway, what about you guys?

I think the Joe Carter home run off Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams will be burned into the memories of all Canadian sports fans for a long time to come.

The only other one I can think of, and I'm not sure if this counts because it wasn't a play, but Joe Sakic excepting the Stanley Cup and immediatly handing it off to Ray Bourque will be burned into my memory for a long time to come as well. It was the greatest sports moment that I had ever witnessed and I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Other than those two, no real plays stick out in my mind.

There are too many to remember them all, but some of the major ones:

1. Reggie Miller's 8 points in like 16 seconds against the Knicks in the playoffs.

2. Kordell Stewart's Hail Mary pass to Michael Westbrook at Michigan.

3. Lennox Lewis' KO punch to Mike Tyson. Actually, the entire fight, which was probably my worst sports moment.

4. Ken Griffey coming around third and scoring the series-winning run for the Mariners over the Yankees in '95.

Yeah, moments can count, too.

For example, when the men's hockey team were awarded their Gold medals in the 2002 Olympics. I'm sure many Canadians will never forget that moment.

The Joe Carter HR is one, because I'm a Phillies fan :(

The "Music City Miracle" (Titans beating the Bills in the playoffs) is another, because I *HATE* the Bills. That *so* made my day.

Ah, the Music City Miracle. I actually missed that play as I had gone into the kitchen because I thought that the game was over. Oh well, I saw the replay enough times.

Another play I forgot to mention was the goal scored by Belarus against Sweden that eliminated the Swedes from the Olympics this year. My brother and I, watching on seperate TVs, marked out like nothing else when that happened.

I was watching that game in a restaurant while eating and when the TD was scored the whole place errupted.

- Vinateri's Kicks: The 45 yarder in the Snow Bowl and the Superbowl winner.

- Pedro Martinez 1-hitter against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium

- I'll go with Bourque winning the Cup too. Guy must have felt like a little kid again.

Goosebumps?!? I cried like a little girl while watching Ray celebrate that win. Remember him doing that interview on the ice, and seeing how wide open his eyes were as he stared at the Cup while the other Avs skated around the ice with it?

Too many to mention so we'll narrow it to two.

Best good memory ingrained: The Kobe to Shaq alley-oop against the Blazers in 2000 Conference Finals to finish Portland off.

Worst bad memory ingrained: Mike Vernon being too damn short that he can't reach the puck over his head as the L.A. Kings eliminate the Flames in the first round of the '90 NHL playoffs.

Was that the one where he went head to head with Clemens? That was actually the first MLB game I watched non-stop from start to finish since 1995, and the last game I watched start to finish before this season.

I don't think so.

The one you are thinking about was the one on ESPN on Sunday night where Nixon hit a 2 run homer to win. That was a pretty good game too.

The one I'm mentioning is the one, I think in '99 where he went the distance and struck out 17.

NBA Playoff Game Bulls vs Cavs

Michael Jordan hits the final shot, and while jumping in joy he accidently hits Craig Ehlo of the Cavs who was guarding him.

Super Bowl Giants vs Bills the field goal miss WIDE RIGHT and the Bills lose the only Super Bowl they had a chance of winning.

Back when Shawn Kemp was the man and in the Finals against the Bulls he just brought it DOWN on Rodman. I just remember that dunk like no other.

Micheal Jordan's game winner against the Cavs- I swear, that was probably the most amazing thing I'd ever seen as a kid because I thought the Bulls were FINISHED, even with the last possession.

Jordan's final shot as a Bull- I had tears in my eyes watching that(and yes, I know he pushed off) and even though he came back, I still consider his last shot as a Bull to be the last great thing I've ever seen.

That kid robbing the Orioles of an out- I didn't like either team, but I hated the Yankees far worse than I hated Baltimore, so when that little bit of bullshit happened, I was seeing blood red.

Joe Theismann's broken leg- Possibly one of the sickest things I've ever seen in sports to this day.

That Detroit Lions player getting his neck broken- I didn't know who he was, but I was close to tears when I heard how serious it was.

Seeing Ric Flair at a Florida Gators game- I'm not the biggets Gator fan, but my mom wanted someone to ride down there with her to see UF play Auburn, so I went. It was like the second quarter and there was a TV timeout, I look at the video wall they have at the other end of the stadium and I see Ric Flair on the screen! He sees the camera is on him(he was on the sidelines) and does the FLAIR STRUT~! and WOOOOOOOOO's the crowd. One of my favorite memories ever of the sporting events I've been too.

Ooooh, this is a good thread!

-D Lowe's no-hitter v. the Devil Dogs earlier this year.

-Bourque winning the Cup

-Av's winning the cup for the first time..in triple OT. That game was fucking awesome.

-Adam Vinetari (sp?) field goals v. Raiders & to win SB. I hate football, but that was so cool, being from New England and all.

-Ball going through Buckner's legs. I think that any Red Sox fan has seen that play way too many times

-Kirk Gibson's HR v. A's in 1988(?) to win the game. That was a bit before my time, I was 5 or 6, but seeing it today. Wow.

I have been lucky enough to have never seen that play, and, if I can help it, based on all I've heard about it, I never will.

You got kicked out of a Sabres game?

Did you chant: Goal when the rest of the crowd chanted No Goal?

Christian Leattner's turn around jumper from the free throw line against Kentucky in the '92 Regional Finals. Broke a young UK fan's heart. *tear*

Hugh Douglas killing Jim Miller. At that point I knew my team was going to a conference championship.

Dale Earnhardt's Daytona 500 victory celebration. The whole pit road deal and everything.

Cal Ripken's victory lap when he broke the record.

Darren McCarty scoring a break away goal after weaving through people. I am a Flyers fan and this is the image i have of those finals that was all it took.
