Guest papacita Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 Just wondering, cuz I've become addicted to the "~!" lately. Who started that?
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I dunno, but I've been a ~! addict for a long time now. FO SHEEZ~!, Kotzenjunge
Guest treble charged Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 As far as I know, the 'tilde bang', as it is commonly referred to, was started on the original Rantsylvania site. Of course, I could 100% wrong, but that's just the first place I remember seeing it.
Guest areacode212 Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I seem to remember reading somewhere (possibly one of Bryan Alvarez's mailbag columns from the Observer site) that the tilde bang came from DVDVR.
Guest Goodear Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 Dean Rassuwhateverman (Of the workrate report) is widely credited for using the tilda for emphasis. The story was that he was reaching for the exclamation point and his finger slipped a key to the left. He thought it looked cool. So there you have it.
Guest dreamer420 Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 so if I write: Fuck~! it is really going to get the point across.
Guest treble charged Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 Kind of along the same line as 'who started what?', was it WrestleLine or Rantsylvania who first used 'La Parka' as an option in their polls? Or am I wrong again and did someone else start it?
Guest Will Scarlet Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I think it was Rantsylvania who started that. I figured it was just some joke of Shannon's. I could be way wrong though.
Guest Incandenza Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I introduced the ~! in a film discussion board once. The Nic Cage flick, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, was new at the time, and I managed to convince a couple of people to only refer to it as CAPTAIN MARIO'S MANDOLIN~!
Guest areacode212 Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I've seen it crop up in some other non-wrestling related contexts as well. I'm not sure if they evolved it independently of Dean, or if DVDVR's influence has spilled out into the non-wrestling world.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I know I've managed to get everyone I know to use it. I've discovered it's only effective if done with all capital letters, and with lower case letter it just looks silly. FO SHEEZ~!, Kotzenjunge
Guest Some Guy Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I got my father to use it and "w00t~!" in various E-Mails to his friends, they all thought he was crazy.
Guest evenflowDDT Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I must admit I use and abuse EMPHASIS~! I've been trying to cut down in my Velocity recaps and posts by trying out SOMETHING ELSE!!!!!!!11 but it just doesn't work as well. Edit: 3900... WHOA~! MORE EMOTICONS~! Hey Puppet Pal Clem? BONK~!
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted September 6, 2002 Report Posted September 6, 2002 I cant say that I've ever used ~! before. I used to do !?! but that got no sold a while back and I just stopped it..
Guest crandamaniac Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 I've used the ~! from time to time. The first time I used it was in a thread about the dangers of the MAVEKICK~! (he will return, and rampant fear will run wild), or as TheLivingLeeeegend~! during the Aviril Invasion, but I mainly took it from Scott Keith. Depending on it's context, it can be used for emphasis or for annoyance.
Guest Anglesault Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 I remember the ORIGINAL HHHaters (Bonus points if you can name them and the order they joined, be careful) made INTENSITY~! poplar for a while.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 INTENSE~! ruled and still does rule as THE best running joke. I'm guessing Anglesault and bps21 were the first two official HHHaters, and I believe Brian was their archenemy. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest evenflowDDT Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 I remember INTENSITY~! !!!!!!11
Guest TheyCallMeMark Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 ~! is very common on the internet, I doubt Dean started it but hey maybe??
Guest Anglesault Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 INTENSE~! ruled and still does rule as THE best running joke. I'm guessing Anglesault and bps21 were the first two official HHHaters, and I believe Brian was their archenemy. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge Would it help if I told you there were four HHHaters before we went all nWo? And that for a while, Bps and I were UNOFFICIAL 1 and 2, but not official.
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 No, wouldn't help. Thanks anyway! By the way, you're alive again, Mr. Commander of Commerce. Just thought you might want to know. Check The General Chat folder for details. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Anglesault Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 Okay, the shocking answer: Neither bps or Anglesault formed the HHHaters. Masked Yodeler formed it, then had bps and me join, and finally teke. Then everyone on earth joined, including the nonsensical turn of our archrival, SUPERMOD BRIAN~!
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 It wasn't THAT nonsensical. He just had a higher threshold for HHHijinx than the rest of you. For the record, I never joined. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 legend has it, the ~! started on RSPW, and was given to the J-crown or Super j Cup winner. Hence, EDDY~!
Guest LJSexay Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 I derno.... because my best friends use it, and they dont ever come online for wrestling or anything related. I think it dates back to some online games, like the whole l337 sp33k deal, which originated from online games. The "~!" might just be a part of that lingo.
Guest The Metal Maniac Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 I'm willing to bet that if it appears on other places (I've never seen it) it probably evolved all independently of each other. I mean, any idiot can hit the wrong key by accident. For the record though, I've always been told it dated back, wrestling-wise, to the rec.sport.pro-wrestling days.
Guest MrRant Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 Perhaps we shall find Ancient Egyptian writings about RA~!.
Guest Marshall Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 I've never seen it outside of a wrestling site.
Guest TheRockIsTheEuropeanChampion Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 Neither have I, but dayum, it sure is fun~! I use it too often. I've even used it in school papers. Nobody seems to mind... I first saw in on Rantsylvania, and that's where I picked up. I marked for Keith... These new smilies are freaky... Dance, bitch, dance !!!
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Posted September 7, 2002 Report Posted September 7, 2002 Dean Rassmussen started it on RSPW by accident, and then started using it as a signature (NANIWA~!) at the end of his posts, I believe.
