Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Venus Williams effectively buries women's tennis for a long time to come defeating Amelie Mauresmo 6-3 5-7 6-4 in a match dripping with miscalls. I saw at least three that should've been either in or out in Mauresmo's favor, and had these been called correctly I think Venus would not have won. Ironically, when the match was over, they had a Heineken ad with John McEnroe going "That wasn't out! How is that out?" over and over. There were a few other people around when I was watching the match, and they, as well as the announcers, pointed out that Williams should not have won some points that she won. As one of them so offensively put it, but I'll retell it anyway risking banning, "French Visitor Robbed By Black in NYC As Thousands Cheer"
Guest Ripper Report post Posted September 10, 2002 So Venus got her ass handed to her instead of Mauresmo. Noone AND I MEAN NO ONE was going to beat Serena anyway. Plus the sets she lost were 6-4 6-3...there weren't that many miscalls to make up for that.
Guest starvenger Report post Posted September 10, 2002 I agree with Ripper. Venus certainly didn't play well in the finals, but Serena was really on her game.
Guest JHawk Report post Posted September 11, 2002 Yeah, but here's the thing. We know the network execs were praying for Williams vs. Williams at the US Open Finals. The only problem is that, while many people are more likely to watch that match for name recoginition, I know a lot of tennis fans that hate both of them (or more accurately, they hate their racist father enough to hate the sisters, as unfair as it is to them) to actually give a shit about that final. I know I refused to watch Williams vs. Williams for the third straight tournament, simply because I didn't care who won and don't like either of them well enough to bother. Although Serena + catsuit = ROWR! And the fact is, I didn't care who won Agassi vs. Sampras, but I watched that one. Reason being? Even in their primes, they weren't the championship match of every tournament, and their matches are always classics. *sigh* There's always the Australian Open for anybody else vs. Serena. Guest Leena Report post Posted September 11, 2002 I don't know if that's totally the case. Throughout the 2 weeks, USA & CBS talked a lot about who can beat the Williams', and CBS didn't have nearly as much hype for the final as last year. Serena got a lot of attention for her catsuit, but some of Venus' matches weren't even shown. The Williams' fad has worn off, and competitive matches with an underdog (who people know) will consistently sell better. Agassi-Sampras matches are great because of the different styles. Agassi, the counterpuncher, the charismatic underdog. Sampras, the big server that can beat Andre whenever he's on top of his game. Not all their matches have been classics, however. Guest hardyz1 Report post Posted September 11, 2002 Serena didn't lose a damn set all tournament. I don't think she even came close. Venus, on the other hand, almost got beat by Chanda Rubin. I don't think anybody really gave Venus a chance. This, of course, hinges on whether the outcome was fixed, which I don't think is true. At least this time. Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted September 11, 2002 On a final tennis note: Hingis/Kournikova is the hottest doubles team ever. Preach on! And following up on the John MacEnroe mention, he once said (and I agree) that Venus Williams, on her best day, could be the #400 ranked male tennis player in the world. Here's a true story that the media didn't report on because it would make the Williams sisters look like tools: A few years back at the Aussie Open, they both claimed they could beat any man ranked outside of the top 200. So, the guy ranked #202 or something (sorry I forgot his name, I think he was Swedish) took them up on the challenge. That morning he played a 9 hole round of golf, then he had lunch and drinks at the pub, and then in the afternoon he beat one of them 6-1 and the other 6-2. Guest Leena Report post Posted September 11, 2002 Serena & Venus played against guys a few times. They guy you might be talking about was Karsten Braasch. He was retired, and beat them 6-1 and 6-0.. and Braasch was known for a horrible return game. I don't think Venus or Serena ever publicly said they could beat them, I think they said they would like a chance. Serena playing her best would be defeated by small college male players. It's just a totally different game.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted September 12, 2002 What I wanna know is where did they get the impression that they could beat men?
