Recommended Posts

Guest HBK WILL ROT IN HELL

Does anyone remember the steel cage match with hogan Vs the Big bossman. I would say it was probably more than ten years old. It was a PPV and I think Hogan supposedly had busted ribs. I would appreicate to know where this was what year and what PPV. Thanks

It was a Saturday Nights Main event...or a Big Event if memory serves.

I think Zeus attacked him before the match...so it had to be in mid-late 89.

Although they probably did the match around the horn, there are two widely available versions of the match.

One is the aformentioned SNME match- Zeus does in fact attack Hogan before the match.

The other- minus an attack- is from MSG, and is probably the better match (it's available on Best of Hulkamania, IIRC).

Both matches feature the top of the cage suplex, and are pretty good for the time (well, they ain't Flair-Steamboat, but they were better than Dino Bravo-Ronnie Garvin).

This fued actually drew a ton of money at house shows all over the country in 1989. Using the "heinous heel attacks Hogan" formula, Bossman/Hogan headlined house shows and then did a second tour of the same cities with the cage match stipulation. Back in the 80's the WWF actually had time to build solid feuds that could be blown off at house shows and thus entice people to attend. Some of these included Andre the Giant vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Brutus Beefcake vs. Randy Savage and Andre the Giant vs. the Ultimate Warrior (which consisted of ten second squashes by the Warrior after a single clothesline due to Andre's deteriorating health). At the end of a house show run the exact same match that everyone who attended had already seen was usually aired on an edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, thus was the case with Hogan/Bossman inside of a "15 foot high steel cage".

The match never headlined a PPV and the feud carried into the Megapowers/Twin Towers program which saw Akeem and the Bossman act as excellent foils for Hogan and Savages ongoing split.

The house show version and the SNME version were slightly different. On the house show Hogan was cuffed to the cage by the Bossman and used his super human strength to break the cuffs. I could be wrong but I don't remember that happening on the NBC broadcast, The Bossman bladed in the SNME match and lost quite a bit of blood. Hulk Hogan had a great spot in the match where he superplexed the Bossman from the top of the cage. Zues did appear but he just kind of stood there and convulsed like always. The plan was to push Zues all the way until WM where Hogan and him can meet center ring but that failed on all cylinders. Of course Hogan went over against the Bossman and basically blew off the feud.

a) I become a moderator when I started writing for the Smarks

b) The powers I have are levitation, mind control, and the ability to turn small children into canaries.

c) I have been a fan for like 16 years, although I don't know if I would quite say a "historian" as I don't own a pipe or a smoking robe.

Hope that helped :)

The Hogan/Bossman cage match from MSG (available on Hulkamania 4) has always been a favourite of mine. Though both are very similar, it's much better than their semi-famous confrontation on SNME. In the SNME match, Hogan had to sell the "attack" that he received from Zeus just proir to entering the cage, putting Bossman on offense. The MSG match had Hogan on rapid offense in the beginning, allowing Bossman to showcase his bumping abilities. I also recall the Bossman was bleeding much more profusely during the MSG match.

Wow it sounds like the one at the Garden is a lot better than the one on SNME!!!

Thanks.

The SNME match is also available on the "WWF's Greatest Steel Cages Matches Of All Time" tape.  I found it at Wal-Mart for $10 a few years ago.  It also has a good Savage & Strike Force-HTM & Hart Foundation Cage Match.
