Guest cynicalprofit Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Is it just me or did HHH only do really good aginst really good opponents. His returned sucked, but his pre injury stuff was all good and it was all against really good opponetns, austin, foley, angle, etc. And his one good match post injury was agaisnt HBK. Was he snowballing us?
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Nah- He came back way too soon and was too big. Had he taken his time to come back and didn't look like Scott Steiner on steroids (haha) then he'd prob be able to work good stuff
Guest cynicalprofit Report post Posted September 7, 2002 But can we name any good matches hes had with guys who arent great talents? I honstely dont know of any...I mean if he was that good, his godwin matches should have been alot better.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted September 7, 2002 HHH wasn't necessarily a great worker or anything, he just timed things REALLY well, sold well for more people, and tried harder in his 2000-injury run. His X-7 match with Undertaker was a watchable, if dull, brawl. Compare that to his suckfests on Raw and at KOTR. He's still got injury problems, and his super inflated steroid muscles don't help his mobility at ALL.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Well HHH wasn't that good in 1995. HHH v. Taker was a very good fun match at X-7. Plus his match v. Kane from Judgement Day I enjoyed
Guest RazorxEDGE Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Sue me, but I gave Undertaker vs. HHH from X-7 ****. I thought it was an awesome brawl.
Guest DJ Jeff Report post Posted September 7, 2002 To be honest, my favorite HHH match was the 2 Out Of 3 Falls match against Austin at No Way Out 2001. I still watch it every so often if I want to see a good match. That's not my favorite all-time match, though.
Guest Army Eye Report post Posted September 7, 2002 A few carry jobs that come to mind were getting above average matches out of Taker and Kane and also treating Rikishi to one of HIS best matches (world title match on Raw in 2000). And I don't get how people talk like getting 5-stars when working with Foley is automatic. I don't recall any ***** matches by Foley other than the two vs. HHH, along with his match vs. Michaels at Mind Games.
Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Well, I didn't think any of those were in the realm of five stars, but it was pretty obvious that Mick did a large body of the work in his matches with HHH. Trips pulled his own weight and had an especially good performance at the Royal Rumble, but Mick was still a far better worker who had performed really well in a ton of garbagy brawls that should have sucked, but didn't. His series with Vader was particularly good. Back on topic, I think a large amount of Trips' work is over-rated (the Iron Man Match with Rock, 2/3 falls with Austin, and "psychology-driven" match with Benoit come to mind) but he was definitely one of the best wrestlers in North America at the time. Royal Rumble v. Foley was real good, and so was Foley Loaded v. Jericho. The Royal/Rumble '01 match vs. Angle is the greatest match that no one ever talks about, too. Just a good worker who sometimes got a lot out of nothing. Of course, now he's getting nothing out of nothing, so something must have gone wrong.
LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Oh yeah I almost forgot about his Rumble 01 match vs. Angle. Great psychology with his work on Angle's leg. I legitimately felt drained from watching it cause it was a well put together match.
Guest ShooterJay Report post Posted September 7, 2002 Foley also had really good matches against Sting and Vader in WCW, and his tag matches with Kevin Sullivan were always solid. What star rating would you give to his Japanese deathmatch stuff, for those who have seen it? HHH vs. Rikishi, HHH vs. Kane and the X-7 UT match solidified him as a great worker pre-injury. HHH also carried Billy Gunn to a good match, although he only succeeded at this once (title match on Raw during either his 2nd or 1st title reign, I forget.) Guest cynicalprofit Report post Posted September 8, 2002 Personaly I can say the WM Taker match was ***1/2* And I didnt dig the Rikishi match. When you wrestle Angle its hard NOT to hit ***, with Mark Henry being an obvious exception.
LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2002 Yeah the X7 match was okay, but I think it gets overrated a lot. Especially with the chokeslam to the nice, soft, coushin.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted September 8, 2002 The X-7 match was cool. Taker winning in his hometown was just nice to see and the match was a lot of fun to watch. I loved when Triple H nailed Taker right in the head with Suzy and everyone thought he was gonna win but Taker kicked out. I give it ***1/2 I give Angle-HHH **** from RR01. Much better then they're Unforgiven snoozefest
Guest BigPoppaKev Report post Posted September 8, 2002 I think HHH held up his end of the bargain in his matches with Angle, Austin, Foley, UT, Kane, etc;. But I do agree that his match quality has dropped of immensly since his return and his match with HBK was the only good match he has had since he came back. Other than that and his match with Jericho at WM all of his stuff has been pretty bad. Kids, that is why you don't do drugs.
Guest Brian Report post Posted September 8, 2002 The deathmatches, which I haven't watched in ages and avoided liek the plague, were horrible. If you want the deathmatches but like good wrestling, don't go after Foley; you want Honma/Yamakawa. Honma brings a super psycology to each match and Yamakawa bumps like a mother fucking insane freak of nature. Back on topic. Trips did have alot of good work during his run, especially the Jericho match which I would put ahead of Royal Rumble.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted September 8, 2002 I think HHH's strength is his selling, and of course he doesn't do it enough, so sucks a lot of the time. I've never been a fan, but i would say his matches with taker and kane are examples of him carrying matches. Not that they were great or anything.
