My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Well...

Now that MBFGW has pretty much taken the number one spot away from Signs, I suppose I should consider going to see what all the fuss is about. Sucks that I'm in Australia now and it doesn't come out until October, BUT what I was wondering if anyone has seen it and if so...what's the verdict?

I thought it was alright, but way overrated. I thought it was pretty average when compared to other movies.

isn't it an independant film?

Yeah, I think that's part of why everyone seems to think it's so great, but it's not like it's a great movie, I just consider it a pretty good independent movie.

I thought it was very funny. if you like a good laugh out loud movie with over the top ethnic family members go see it!

It''s a cute comedy. Certanly better than most of the comedies Hollywood puts out there. My big complaint is that the editing seemed choppy. As if they filmed 2 hours of movie, but had already decided that they were making a 90 min. movie - so they had to awkwardly edit it down.

It is not the best movie ever, and actually the romance plot is very run of the mill. What makes the movie is the family. They're pretty exaggerated and maybe a bit stereotypical but it's all meant in fun.

Overall, it's a good date movie, but don't expect to be blown away or moved to tears or anything - just expect to be entertained by a bunch of near-no name actors.

When did this movie suddenly explode in popularity? Hasn't MBFGW been out for months?

Since the spring, actually.

It started out small, in a few theatres in a few cities, and kept expanding a few cities at a time, which I gather is typical for an indie. Except this one caught fire, kept opening in new cities, and will actually pass $100 million soon.
