An interesting bit of news from the WWE website:

Lilian signs with Univeral Records

Debut Single "Shout" Set for Release Oct. 8, 2002

WHO: Lilian Garcia, WWE ring announcer/singer

WHAT: WWE fans know her as RAW's ring announcer and singer of the "Star Spangled Banner," but music fans everywhere will soon know her as a Universal recording artist with the release of her upcoming debut album.

Universal Records President, Monte Lipman, attended a NYC club performance of Garcia's in early 2002 and subsequently signed her to a recording contract, enlisting EMI Music Publishing's Evan Lamberg to help develop her repertoire. Lamberg paired Garcia with Meredith Brooks, who is best known for the 1997 #1 hit "Bitch", to co-write and produce her forthcoming release, which will contain the single "Shout".

Though Garcia will be hard at work making her debut album, she will continue to delight WWE fans each week on RAW.

WHEN: The first single, "Shout," will go to Pop radio on 10/8. Her full-length debut album is due to be released in 2003.

What do you think of this? I think Lilian's good at singing the Star Spangled Banner, but I'm not totally sure I'd buy into her as a legit singing pop sensation. However, I am interested in her being teamed with Meredith Brooks for co-writing, so there should at least be a couple of interesting songs on the album when it comes out. I'll keep an ear and a KaZaA queue out for "Shout" when it hits next month (if it hits on time... the article doesn't give any notice to it being recorded yet or not, and aren't albums usually recorded all at once, which takes months?), but I'm not really expecting much.

Merideth Brooks? I suppose that this will probably be a pop album more in line with Pink's current album than the Latin-pop that Shakira and Paula Rubio have released then...

I'm guessing they're just going to release the single, gauge the reaction from that, and then see whether or not it's worth it to go ahead and release a whole album.

I do find this to be rather humourous, though:

Though Garcia will be hard at work making her debut album, she will continue to delight WWE fans each week on RAW.

Well, I don't know about you, but I actually take perverse delight when she screws up. And I'm sure that the live crowd likes seeing her better than seeing Finkel...

Yeah, watching her screw up is fun (I still chuckle when I think of 'Pittsburgh, Philadelphia'), but it kind of makes me mad that someone as talented at his job as the Fink is not used.

But yeah, I'd rather see her in her underwear than the Fink.

The Fink must have a Hogan-type clause in his contract, where he only does Heat, PPVs, and tuxedo/evening gown matches with the other announcers...

It'd be funny if there really was a Pink/Lilian Garcia duet on her album.

Hey, another semi-interesting piece of news - Meredith Brooks also produced the upcoming new Jennifer Love Hewitt album, so Lilian's album will probably sound a lot like that, so Dames and kingpk... let us know how that album sounds, OK?

If the rest of the album sounds anything like that terrible Barenaked song, then it most definitely sucks.
