Guest Phr33k Report post Posted September 9, 2002 Man, was that the stupidest thing you've ever heard of, or what? First of all, it completely defeats the whole purpose of the league, that is, a football league for CANADA. Second of all, you'd think they'd have put teams in cities closer to Canada. I mean, Sacramento? SAN ANTONIO? And finally, the biggest travesty in the history of professional sports: the Shreveport Pirates. Their combined stats for two years: 8-28-0, 795 points for and 1175 against. Also the teams in Memphis and Birmingham. Are those two cities cancers for football, or what? Oh yeah, final note. The incredibly dumb-sounding names for the teams were: Las Vegas Posse Memphis Mad Dogs Birmingham Barracudas Sacramento Goldminers San Antonio Texans Shreveport Pirates Baltimore Stallions. The only team to become anything in the CFL were the Stallions, who won the Grey Cup in 1995. Shortly thereafter, all the US teams were shut down except Baltimore, who were moved to Montreal and renamed the Alouettes. GO ALS GO!!!
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted September 9, 2002 I remember the Baltimore CFL No Namers/Stallions. They were a big deal in Baltimore, probably more so than any other US team. Baltimore loves football..

Guest DrTom Report post Posted September 9, 2002 I had a partial season-ticket plan for the Colts/CFL Colts/CFLs/Stallions. The CFL games were a nice change of pace from the NFL, though I definitely prefer the American brand of football. Winning the Grey Cup in 95 was hella cool. Baltimore loves football, which is why it was a shame that the Colts left uncer cover of night before the '84 season, and why it was a sin that it took the city a dozen years to get another team. Stuff your museum, Mr Commissioner.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 9, 2002 The worst part of the expansion was that most (if not all) of the US football stadiums weren't suited to CFL dimensions. In Memphis, they had to put a ring of astroturf around the grass field, and there was something like a 1 inch drop-off between the grass and the turf. Not to mention the fact that the Posse practiced in a parking lot, that was gold. But, to their credit, the CFL survived all of this, and are now stronger than they have been in long, long while. Guest Will Scarlet Report post Posted September 9, 2002 I vaguely remember when that happened. For a long while, I just thought it was all a dream because they just seemed to vanish off the face of the earth all of a sudden, never to be mentioned again. Guest Bricks Report post Posted September 9, 2002 The Las Vegas Posse is probably the worst franchise in sports history. They held practices at a hotel parking lot and attendence was so bad that the league decided to cancel their home games and made them play them on the road at their opponents' home. Ha! Guest Rock Candy Report post Posted September 9, 2002 I read in Sports Illustrated about the CFL Colts/Baltimore Football Club/Stallions, and how the league planned to expand to "at least 24" cities altogether, and they were mulling changing their to the Continental Football League. St. Louis, at the time, was an overwhelming favorite for the next U.S. based CFL team...which obviously wasn't going to happen once the Rams left California and the CFL decided to fold their U.S. teams. I always did wonder why they went to Shreveport instead of any other good-sized market in the south. -Ben
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 9, 2002 I believe the SA Texans played in the Alamo Dome. Yeah, the Texans played in the Alamodome for the one year they were in existence (they were originally the Sacramento team, which lasted 2 seasons). Anyway, here is a good site that details the history of the CFL's ill-fated expansion into America.
Guest starvenger Report post Posted September 9, 2002 Ah yes, the fabled US expansion. Let's see... - The Posse had a singer completely botch "O Canada". He got the lyrics right (he was reading them off of a sheet of paper) but the tune he was singing the lyrics to is anybody's guess (possibly O Christmas Tree, but who knows). - The owners of the Shreveport Pirates, the Gliebermans, also helped to kill the Ottawa franchise. - The non-traditional uniforms. I actually liked the idea, if not some of the logos. - The objection of the NFL to Baltimore using the name "Colts". So they became the Baltimore CFL's. I loved the fact that they would be announced as the "Baltimore CFL" with the fans adding in "Colts"...
