Guest Vern Gagne Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 The Braves have clinced their 11th straight divisional title. That is an amazing accomplishment. The Twins (yes) should have the division clinced this weekend. They however will start the postseason on the road. Right know it will be Oakland, but Anaheim could still win the West. The Yankees will be next probably clinching sometime next week. Seattle is really playing themselves out of the postseason race. They've all but eliminated themselves from the division race. Boston only trails Seattle by 2 1/2 games and their schedule is alot easier. Plus what's up with Ichiro he's really struggled lately. Which goes to show you how deserving he was of the MVP last year. The A's/Angels series has live up to the hype. Angels have too win at least one of the last two games to maintain a realistic chance of catching the A's. Why is that when a team battles back and gets to .500 like the Phillies, and Orioles they go in the tank. Baltimore has lost 15 of 16, and the Phillies something like 9 out of 10. They where swept in double-headers, the Orioles lost a game against the Yankee B squad, and the Phillies at home to the Marlins.
Guest OctoberBlood Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 Which goes to show you how deserving he was of the MVP last year. First off, a persons statistics this year, has nothing to do with last year, so that was moronic to say, although I did not agree with him winning the MVP last year, it still has nothing to do with it.

I'm going to assume that what he was implying by this statement that as Ichiro goes, so go the Mariners, thus proving how worthy he was of the MVP last season. That's what I'm assuming anyway.
Guest DragonflyKid Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 I don't like the fact the A's started Lilly yesterday. I think Harang has pitched well enough to earn the job. Lilly would be better coming out of the pen for left-handers, with Rincon that would make two good lefties to go with the 4 solid right-handers. I don't see the Twins making it past the first round of the playoffs no matter who they play, just like the A's last year inexperience will hurt them. Their rotation has been injury prone and their offense is good but not great. The Angels have a good offense and good starting pitching. I think if they win the wildcard they have a chance to beat the Yanks. Washburn, Appier and Ortiz have been great and their pen is solid. Seattle's offense has struggled, last year guys were having career years, now they have fallen back down to earth and Seattle has been exposed as only a decent team. The Giants have won two over the Dodgers and are now 1 game ahead in the Wildcard. A bay area World Series however unlikely would be great(If you live in NOCAL that is as I do.). The playoffs of both divisions look like they will be wide open, I can see anyone winning with no definite favorites.
Guest Kingpk Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 Nice to see that Manny Ramirez is earning that contract of his by not even attempting to run out a bouncer to the mound, and then laughing afterwards. The Sox should have gotten Mussina, at least he gives a shit.

A bay area World Series however unlikely would be great(If you live in NOCAL that is as I do.). I do see the Giants getting the wildcard but like every year they get in, they'll lose pretty fast. I also live in NoCal and even though I'm an A's fan, KNBR has mostly Giants info so I think I can speak on this. They don't have the pitching staff to compete in the playoffs and Barry's postseason stats are aweful. He doesn't see good pitches in the playoffs i'll give you that, but he has admitted it isn't his job to carry the team come playoff time. Also, the Giants bench isn't that good and the fans boo when Shawon Dunston comes up. I wouldn't mind seeing a Bay Area series, or Superbowl for that matter, but I just don't see it happening. Dusty is a good, but not great coach and ownership has already said him coming back next year depends on how the team does.
Guest alkeiper Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 I'm not even going to try and predict the playoffs this year. I'm justgoing to sit back and enjoy the ride. (And hope the Yankees don't win)

Guest treble charged Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 The Braves have clinced their 11th straight divisional title. That is an amazing accomplishment. Were it true, than it would definitely be a great accomplishment, however, 1994 (stirke or no strike) still happened, whether people want to admit it or not. And how 'bout them Jays? 3rd place baby, for something like the 6th year in a row maybe? Gotta like that consistency.
Guest redbaron51 Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 i have a random thought D'Backs to repeat
Guest bob_barron Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 The 1994 season never ended and who knows what would've happened. Therefore I still say 11 yrs. yea- I'm a braves fan
Guest Brian Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 Wasn't Montreal on pace to break the wins record that year?
Guest treble charged Posted September 11, 2002 Report Posted September 11, 2002 I don't know about that, but they were 74-40 in August, and were 6 games above any other team in the league (Braves were second). A very good season, all gone to waste.

Guest treble charged Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 Yes, their record has gotten worse, but I still cling to the fact that their record in '98 was better than the World Series' winning Yankee's was in 2000. It's small, I know, but it gets me through some rough points in my life.
Guest meanmaisch Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 The Phillies can't play the kind of baseball needed to keep them above .500. Its as simple as that.

Guest Vern Gagne Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 The Angels won't make it out the first round either. They lack experience like the Twins.
Guest alkeiper Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 The Phillies can't play the kind of baseball needed to keep them above .500. Its as simple as that. Am I the only Phillies fan on the optimist club? They lead baseball in walks drawn, they have a deep farm system, and next year's Rookie of the Year, Marlon Byrd. The Angels won't make it out the first round either. They lack experience like the Twins. You never know. All you have to do is win 3 out of five. A few breaks and ANY team can advance. Except of course the ones not playing.
Guest Strike Force! Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 I didn't finish watching the game last night, but the A's were whipping up on the Angels when I went to bed. The A's are clearly the team to beat, not just in the AL, but in all of baseball.

"I didn't finish watching the game last night......" Clue #2. "......whipping up on the Angels WHEN I WENT TO BED." From that, I would deduce that I did NOT see the Angels come back.
Guest bob_barron Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 Well if you don't know the results of the game in question don't act like you do. I'm still happy about the Braves making it ELEVEN years in a row!!!
Guest treble charged Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 Well, if the Angels play the Yankees, they have a good a chance as anyone else, especially since they are the only AL team to have a winning record against New York since 1998.

I'd be curious to know how you came to that conclusion. It'll take a pretty good explanation to convince me that you're not just being a tool.

The Phillies would be in OK shape if the could GET HITS WITH RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION I would bet they lead the league in runners LOB.
Guest meanmaisch Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 I actually dread seeing a Phillie get a hit or a walk when there's no one on base. I know that it will almost always amount to nothing. As for the Phillies farm system, I'm very pessimistic. It's not because of the current minor league talent (which is very good), but because the Phils usually manage to screw things up.
