Guest Vern Gagne Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 The Angels won't make it out the first round either. They lack experience like the Twins. You never know. All you have to do is win 3 out of five. A few breaks and ANY team can advance. Except of course the ones not playing. That's true. Especially if the Angels and Twins meet in the 1st round than one of have to advance.
Guest alkeiper Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 Reminds me of when some writer was asked who would win the '45 World Series. "I don't think either team can win."
Guest bob_barron Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 I think it's cool that the A's, Angels and Twins will all make the playoffs probably. Aren't they all small market teams?
Guest alkeiper Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 Depends on your definition of small market. The Angels play near Los Angeles, which is hardly small market, but they act like a small market team. The Cardinals play in a smaller market than any of the aforementioned three teams.
Guest treble charged Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 I think the term 'low-revenue' should replace 'small market', as there really aren't any 'small markets' in the major leagues.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 As long as the World Series doesn't involve the Yanks, I'm cool with it. Hell, I'd even welcome the Braves v. any AL playoff team. I'm really tired of seeing the Yanks in it every year. This looks like the year that they go down. Oh, and the A's v. Angels game on Wednesday was playoff quality. I regret falling asleep in the top of the 7th, as it appears I missed the RALLY MONKEY~! and the Angels winning. Even still, it was one of the better games that ESPN has broadcast in recent memory. I'm glad that they're showing more Twinkies, A's and Angels games, as those are the 3 best teams right now.
Guest meanmaisch Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 Wouldn't it be nice if neither the Braves nor the Yankees made the World Series? I would like to see a Twins/ Cardinals World Series
Guest ant_7000 Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 My money is on the A's and Braves/D-Backs in the World Series.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 I'd love to see the A's/Angels/Twinkies v. Cardinals in the series. I hate Atlanta (sorry bob barron), can't stand LA, and I hate SF. Arizona, I'm fairly indifferent towards, as they beat the Yanks last year, but I'd like to see the A's/Angels/Twinkies/Cardinals win the series this year.
Guest bob_barron Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 Wouldn't it be nice if neither the Braves nor the Yankees made the World Series? I would like to see a Twins/ Cardinals World Series While it would be wonderful if the Yankees didn't make it- it's kinda suck if the Braves didn't make it. Does Anaheim have a high payroll like the Dodgers and Red Sox or is they're more payroll more in the Twins/A's range?
Guest alkeiper Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 According to espn.com, the Angels Opening Day payroll was around $61 million, 15th in baseball. They're in the same range as the Orioles and the Astros.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted September 14, 2002 Report Posted September 14, 2002 It's over in the American League. Barring a miracle... New York, Minnesota, Anaheim, and Oakland are your playoff teams. Know it's really a matter of whether Oakland or Anaheim wins the A.L. West. Houston all but kissed their postseason hopes good bye with a 3-2 10 inning loss to St.Louis. They need to win the rest of the games against St.Louis to have a realistic chance of winning.

I hope the Cards come from the NL.
Guest DragonflyKid Posted September 14, 2002 Report Posted September 14, 2002 The A's offense is not looking good right now, after beating up on all the jobber teams now they're facing good teams with good pitchers and are struggling. Good thing they have Zito and Huddy throwing shutouts to overcome the small amount of runs they are putting up. The Cards are a fun team to watch, they have the starting rotation and the offense to be sucessful in the playoffs. I've said it before, the upcoming playoffs look wide open, predicting winners is going to be tough which should make for some excitement.
Guest MaxPower27 Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 I don't know about struggling, they had a tough series v. Anaheim, but it wasn't like they got their asses handed to them, the games were close. They beat Seattle 1-0, so being able to win games 1-0 and 10-0 is going to help them.
Guest bravesfan Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 While it would be wonderful if the Yankees didn't make it- it's kinda suck if the Braves didn't make it. I would probably say the same, if anyone in the NL had a dominant team to go up against them. The Cardinals are still weak in starting pitching, while the Diamondbacks just added 1 year in age to the same roster from 2001. The Braves may falter again in the playoffs this year, so that "dominance" idea might not hold up anyway. But no matter who takes the pennant, I'm rooting for the NL.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Big Series coming up this week Anaheim at Oakland San Fran. at Los Angeles Anaheim and San Fran, lead there respected races by 1 game. They'd probably settle for a split. Either way both should be great series.
Guest DragonflyKid Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 I'll be at the A's/Angels games on wednesday and thursday. The series doesn't matter as much as it would have if Seattle were still in the race but they both have been playing well(Aside from Oakland's offensive slump.) and should have an exciting series. The difference between winning the wildcard or the division isn't all that important. Facing the Twins would be better than facing the Yanks but one would have to go through NY anyways. Home field advantage is a positive but only slightly, the better team is usually going to win no matter if they are home or away. The SF/LA series will basically have it all on the line, one team will make the playoffs and one will not. A head-to-head battle can really turn the momentum to one team's favor.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted September 17, 2002 Report Posted September 17, 2002 My God. The Sports Forum is being overrun by Football Threads. Anaheim is moving there starters up a game. Is this a wise decision? Will an older pitcher like Kevin Appier be able to be affective on 3 days rest.
Guest Brian Posted September 17, 2002 Report Posted September 17, 2002 Minnesota doesn't have the pitching of a New York and that's the difference. I think Oakland can beat New York, because they have the pitching. I don't know where the offense thing comes in with Oakland as they have Tejada and Chavez for starters, plus Justice and Durham; Dye has decent power but isn't hitting well, and Mabry has been hitting well for no reason. Zito seems to be in line for the Cy Young this year.
