Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted September 11, 2002 From what I saw in the previews I think I am going to look it, The movie reminds me of the barbershops I go to. But I think its a worth see it kind have that "Soul Food" type vibe to it.

Guest Lethargic Report post Posted September 12, 2002 I just find it sad that Ice Cube keeps trying to make another Friday. Dude, it ain't gonna happen. To black comedies Friday is like Citizen Kane. You can't make it again.

I don't think Cube has Citizen Kane in mind when spawing the Friday series:  The first one made almost $30 million on a $3.5 million budget...  The second one had a $17 million opening weekend, topping it's $9.5 million buget...  Why not milk this series for all its worth?  Ooops, forgot to mention that all box-office info was stolen from the one and only IMDB...

Citizen Kane was a major flop when it was released. It went on to become recognized as one of the greats.  Friday didn't make that much money when it originally got released. But through home video and cable it has become one of the great comedies of our generation.  Sequels may make money and ripoffs like Barbershop may make money, but they'll NEVER be what Friday is. A great movie that's hilarious from start to finish.  I laughed all the way through Friday all 6 million times I watched it. I never laughed once at Next Friday and never watched it again. Guest El Satanico Report post Posted September 12, 2002 Well i don't really see where you're getting that this is that big of a Friday ripoff. Is any "black comedy" that happens to use the surrounding neighborhood starring Ice Cube now automatically a ripoff of Friday or something.
Guest Mattdotcom Report post Posted September 12, 2002 "Who drank my applejuice?!" Â "You'd better run, boy!" Â No thanks. Â Mattdotcom...keeps forgetting this...

It's Ice Cube surrounding himself with a bunch of funny people and they tell a story that all takes place in this little neighborhood in one afternoon. The only thing that looks different to me is the setting. Â Plus Ice Cube's character names in Friday and Barbershop BOTH START WITH C!! Hmmmm? Deny it now! Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted September 12, 2002 I think it's nice to see a black comedy that isn't rated R, if I'm correct Barbershop is rated PG-
Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted September 12, 2002 Well its not like Friday (if you saw it) nothing close to it. Its about Cube inherits a barbershop from his father who passed away and he doesn't know if he wants to sell it or not. I like that part when Eve was "Who drank my applejuice" and then the white dude says "It might of evaporated." that was funny to me anyway.
Guest papacita Report post Posted September 12, 2002 I'm gonna see it...the previews look good, and Eve looks good as hell with long hair.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted September 12, 2002 Yeah that was a pretty lame scene and didn't give me any great desire to see the movie. Â I wouldn't pay to see this, but it's a movie that i would watch once on tv if i happened to come across it and nothing else was on.

Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted September 13, 2002 It's an interesting premise with a lot of potential, but the trailer for it SUCKS! Â "OJ did it!"? What an old, unfunny joke. How does that make one a "philosopher"? Eve's character looks like she has potential, but from the clip they showed, she doesn't look like someone you'd want to root for (she does look nice with long hair tho, papacita's right). The part with the guy's car is funny, and the Wanna-Be could be funny or a one-joke character, I'm not sure yet. Â Anyway, I'll probably see it, but not until it hits video unless it gets really good reviews.
Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted September 13, 2002 Admittedly it's not gonna be the best movie in the world, but Ice Cube knows his audience and people WILL go to see it. The same people that went to see Next Friday (which actually IS funny, although I didn't find it so at first. Mike Epps as Cube's cousin Day Day is fucking hilarious!), Soul Food and any other "black" movie. They won't come out to see SIGNS or Minority Report, but for some reason the idea of people sitting around a table on Sunday's eating chicken and collard greens or sitting on their ass in a barbershop all day brings them out in droves. So Barbershop will make a nice chunk of change the opening weekend. This sort of crowd doesn't have much else to choose from this weekend...they've probably been anticipating Barbershop's release...or ANY Ice Cube release. Â Whether it's as successful as Friday remains to be seen. Personally, I don't think so. But I don't see Barbershop as an attempt to recreate Friday's magic. Half of the so-called "funny" peope that Cube is surrounding himself with aren't funny. The ONLY comedian of the bunch is Cedric the Entertainer. Â I can't believe a Citizen Kane/Friday comparison (regardless of the comparison) was even MADE. To whomever said that Friday was a flop at the box office like Kane is WRONG, though. Friday was a major success a the box office, to the tune of 30 mil. That's not video rentals and sales...that's box office: meaning movie-goers went to go see it. Â Lastly, the scene in the trailer goes: Â "Who drank my apple juice?" "Maybe it evaporated..." "Maybe I'm about to slap you." Â I think it was just a slice-of-life sorta scene. Everyone's had someone take something that didn't belong to them at work. I think it sorta establishes Eve as one of those sassy, you-don't-wanna-fuck-with-me type sistas that the crowd that sees this type of movie so easily identifies with. Â It's not enough to make me spend $8.50, but I thought I'd clarify.

Well, I heard a couple of reviews and people liked it. I was still going regardless. Someone had commented that what makes a "philosopher" some of the black barbershops I go to, you would see somebody like him always rambling about nothing and talking about "In my day" type of stuff, and the younger guys wouldn't get a haircut from him because he would probably fuck it up. Anthony Anderson's "Hustler" character is right on point because everytime I get a haircut there's some hustler that always comes in and want to sell you shit from bootleg tapes to clippers. Eve might steal the show with her sassy character (She looks real good in this one), or the "wannabe" guy thats probably everybody will be rooting for, because everybody will turn him down to cut their hair because he's white. I think I might like this movie eventhough it looks predictible.

Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted September 13, 2002 The part with 'Your daddy would never sell this place' 'Do I look like my daddy' 'Well, yeah, you do' part looks pretty funny, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the funniest part. I'll wait until it's on cable and then I might watch it.
Guest TheArchiteck Report post Posted September 14, 2002 This movie looks entertaining. And I really dont see how you think this is a Friday ripoff, doesn't remind me of Friday in anyways. Â The funniest part in the trailer was when they guy (forgot his name, he be in everything also) was going down the stairs with this big dude squeezing through. Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted September 14, 2002 It got pretty good reviews from our daily guy who normally I would have thought he would pan it.....It kind of looks like a 90 minute version of the CLASSIC SCENES in COMING TO AMERICA, where Eddie Murphy rocked boats. Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted September 16, 2002 I am going to check it out when I get a chance. I love black comedy in general. For some reason, a lot of people don't really find stuff funny like I do. Case in point: showing Mary-Keith How High was odd, because I was laughing my ass off and she was just staring at me, wondering what was so funny about Redman saying in a weird voice "Don't be skeert. It's only pussy!" or the pimps. The pimps in How High rank in my mind among the greatest comedic characters ever. In MY mind. Â Like I've always said, I have weird taste. But to answer the topic, yes. Â Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted September 16, 2002 I just got back from seeing it, and it was good to me. Cedric stole the show with the old barber character. It had that "Its a Wonderful Life" vibe to it.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted September 16, 2002 It had that "Its a Wonderful Life" vibe to it. Well there's still zero chance that i'd make an effort to see this, but how in the hell does it have an It's A Wonderful Life "vibe"?
Guest ant_7000 Report post Posted September 16, 2002 It had since of community and everybody hung out there, and Calvin didn't know what he had in the Barbershop when he sold it, he was thinking about himself and not thinking about how would effect other people that surrounded him. And he realized that if he sold the barbershop that it wouldn't be a since of community. You would have to see the movie to really understand what im talking about.
