I wish I lived in New York and played the lottery.

if it's anything like the u.k. lottery, it will have been completely rigged to throw that number up. don't know how the lottery funding works in nyc, but over here all it basically is a tax on poor people's aspirations. i still play the bastard though, in spite of my moral objections to it.

Didn't something like that happen in Boston awhile ago?

I remember hearing something about it on the news, but I just can't seem to remember the significance of the numbers.

The day Flight 387 crashed in Queens, guess what the Pick 3 numbers were?

You're fucking right.

Also, last night in New York, the Yankees defeated Baltimore.

The score: 5-4...in 11 innings.

My take on the lottery is this: Sure it's like flushing your money down the toliet, but if we live in a free society then you have to let the morons blow their paychecks away on dreams that will never happen. Besides, with the way the stock market is (another form of gambling, IMO), I think it'd be wiser to invest in a few lottery tickets -- they're worth the same as shares from certain companies...

Yeah, the lottery # on New Year's day was 2002.

I'd be willing to bet (pardon the pun) that most lotteries in the States are rigged, too. Sure, there are coincidences, but come ON.

Not all are rigged but I'm certain they fixed this one...maybe they could have smarter about it and have it go

1-9-1.

I don't think it was rigged. Supposedly, the Pick 3 matches the date roughly 3 times a year. Stuff like this happens all the time, it's just because of Sept. 11th's significance that people are paying extra attention to it.

That must be rigged. I know coincidences happen but what would the odds of that be?

Maybe it wasn't. I don't know how the lottery drawings are handled in NY, but I CAN tell you how they're handled here in MD. Years ago, I used to work for a lottery agent, and I got to be a "witness" at the daily drawings a few times.

You're taken to a room that is separate from the room where they actually conduct the drawings. There are numerous tubes of numbered drawing balls on the floor. You have to select however many tubes are going to be used without picking them up or examining them in any way. Then you leave that room and wait for the drawing. A few minutes later, the numbered balls are loaded into the machine, but there's no way of knowing if the ones they're loading are the ones you picked.

I know the results are ostensibly random, but I noticed that the "big" numbers played (triples, 1212 and similar numbers) would hit every so often, just to maintain interest in them. The 4-digit 1225 would always hit around Xmas, and the multimillion-dollar Lotto would always have a big jackpot right around the holidays. I wouldn't think much of it if these things didn't happen EVERY YEAR.

Maybe the lottery isn't rigged, but at least in MD, the lottery agency does just about everything they can to give you the impression that it is.

Hey, what were the findings of that crash? Did they ever say? Was it a bird that had flown into the engine like it was thought? Any conclusions to taht?

First of all, the flight number was 587, not 387.

The NTSB site for the investigation has the details that have been discovered so far.

exactly the same with the u.k. lottery. there is ALWAYS a rollover jackpot on holiday weekends, plus practically every single week there are 2 of the 6 numbers which are right next to each other. 21,22 - 36,37 - 13,14 - etc. i don't know what that achieves, probably to keep too many people from sharing the jackpot and getting less of a payout, but i do know it happens far too regularly to be simple chance.
