Calling All Christians/Catholics/Religious people.

Recommended Posts

Guest NoCalMike

An Act of God? There is a christian guy at my work and he is a devout christian. I don't mind it at all as I respect his belief in anything he wants. I have just gotten sickened by a daily dose of him telling me that God took his shield off of america in order for sept. 11th to happen....To me that just contradicts the "love of god/jesus" I will admit I am not the most well informed on religion, but I am not "in the dark" either. So I am just wonder what do all of you religious folk on the smarksboard feel about this opinion.

I bet it could fall under the category of "Tough Love"..

Seriously, I think it was, but I don't think it worked. The plan might have been to try and get religion back as a more major factor in our lives, but if anything I think its gotten to be less of a factor. Everyone was saying after 9-11 how they needed to turn to religion at a time like that, but now a year later and attendance figures at the majority of churches are actually down from 1 year ago pre 9-11. Its a shame really..

I find the idea of a proactive God who meddles with the affairs of this planet on a daily basis to be a fairly ridiculous, if not offensive idea. So, no.

Hey, he/she flooded the world once so you never know.

Personally, I think the 911 NY lottery numbers was more like an act of God...

If 9/11 were God's plan to get people back to church, I'd want to fire a few cruise missiles up His divine but retarded ass.

What, a big fucking booming voice out of the heavens wouldn't have worked?

A simple "HI, I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD. PLEASE ATTEND SUNDAY SERVICE" would have done much more than murdering 3000 people. And are the ~200 who committed suicide by jumping from the shattered Towers going to hell because they didn't wait to be murdered by God?

No, I don't think God had anything to do with 9/11. I think that's an obscene idea. It's obvious who did it: 15 Moslems from Saudi Arabia plus 4 other Moslems from elsewhere. The "God took his shield off America" line is nothing but a disgusting attempt to advance a fundamentalist agenda by whoring the tragedy of others. That filthy scum like Falwell and Robertson said it should be enough of a clue.

I do want a damned good explanation from God for why He let it happen, though. As well as countless other atrocities throughout history, mostly in His name. Hasn't He ever heard of copyright laws? With a few good lawyers He might have prevented the Inquisition, the Crusades, the slaughter of the Albigensians and the Waldenses - not to mention 9/11.

Holy war? Uh-uh, oh no you don't. That's a trademark infringement...

BUUUULLLSHIIIITT.

Your friend needs to use his brain and not listen to what others have to say. I believe in God, and I am religious, but IMO religion must be regulated with COMMON SENSE. Religion is a creation of man to deal with God, and as such has been twisted by just about everyone who dabbles in it. Luckily I was born into a really good one.

1) why would a loving god ever want 3000 people to die? Maybe OT god, but NT god had a new covenant, and was much nicer. OT is history. NT is faith.

2) (paraphrased) After God created the flood of Noah he put a rainbow into the sky to show that he would never do anything like that again. I mean if you believe the tale of Noah was an act of god, (and not just the Black/Mediterranian forget which sea flooding out most of the early cultures it happened look it up) then you have to believe that he said he'd never do it again. Personally I think it's a load of bunk. A lot can happen in a couple thousand years, many "miracles." Shit apparently a meteor hits earth every 1000 years. Would that not look like an act of god?

There's very little scum that's filthier.

Since I'm an atheist, I'll go a big "no" in the whole "God made 9-11 happen" debate. But, if certain people in turbans shared my views, we'd be talking about taxes right now or something, so I suppose god or whatever was involved in the respect that it was essentially religiously motivated. god, allah, whatever. Same invisible man, different book.

Meteorites hit the earth every day. Big ones don't smack into us hardly as often as 1000 years, thankfully. The last one was about 65 million years ago, depending on which theory you subscribe to, if any.

I heard that smaller ones hit more often. It was on the news, they were talking about killer meteorites, and how if there was one coming we could probably divert it with rockets.

But they said smaller ones hit about every 1000 years. Apparently one caused that massive explosion in a USSR forest?

If it was an act of God, would you continue to follow Him? I fashioned a poem after Columbine.

"What kind of God divine, would allow Columbine?"

Same goes, too, for 9/11.

As an atheist, I think your friend is full of shit. If he really does believe that this great god of his killed 3,000 innocent people just for the hell of it, I'm surprised he is still willing to follow this god character. Plus, it just makes NO SENSE at all. It's theories like those that really turned me off of religion because they are nothing more an inane stupidity.

Maybe god just wanted those 3,000 people to hangout with him in heaven......Well, that is about as realistic as the original statement.

I doubt it. People make their own decisions, and its effects are always going to be felt, no matter how big.

God does not directly involve himself with what mankind does. It was a quote from the bible, I saw on Mysteries of the Bible.

Atheist why are you responding to this thread. You don't belive in god so its obvious you dont't think God let this happen.

if you believe in an omnipotent god, you have to believe that he allowed this to happen. if he didn't allow it to happen, then he wouldn't be omnipotent.

on the grand world scale of tragedies, this is not that significant. hiroshima, dresden & the holocaust were all much bigger tragedies than this, and that's just in the last hundred years.

thousands of people die in horrible ways everyday. we in the united states are not special.

Exactly my thoughts on the whole "Act of God" argument.

Really, if you believe that was an "Act of God", there must be dozens and dozens of these "Godly Acts" going on in Israel with those suicide bombers running around. And how about that "Act of God" that Tim McVeigh pulled off in Oklahoma?

I'm a Catholic, yet my personal belief is this: Religion is to give something for us to believe in. It doesn't control anyone except those who take religion too far.

I have religion unlike others would understand as religion, so I'll not get into this, but what I think if anything, is that the things that occur on this planet are completely affected by the people, and the decisions they make day to day. Truthfully, things happen, things like 9/11 may be huge, but they are still occurances that happen from time to time, and the thing a lot of people have failed to notice is that we need to move on. Dwelling on such things in the light of tragedy is not the way to go methinks. It is our opportunity to learn our strengths and weaknesses, and become better through it.

I know it's slightly rude for me to say we need to forget that all these people died, and that we need to see revenge for every last body in that attack. We all have people die around us, and we grieve in our own ways, but we seriously need to take it in a different light.

You know, I read this and find it's rather hard for me to justify my feelings, but they are my feelings just the same. The purpose of the 9\11 attacks was to disrupt our daily lives, to make Americans uncomfortable with where they are, and make everyone weary. We need to get around that, and keep moving.

I will say lastly, the souls of those dead move on, as we should. Don't stay stuck in the past, and embrace what is to come.

As a Roman Catholic, I say it's BS.

Now, my views of faith do not exactly follow those of my church's, but whatever. Personally, I think that God is there, but He does virtually nothing to interfere. So while it could be argued that He let it happen by not preventing it, I think it's just a matter of Him giving us free will - In order to give us free will, He had to step back and just watch things happen. (Note: I know there's people on the board who will read this statement and think me a fool *Glares at Dr. Tom* but the "free will" debate is neither here nor there.)

So things happen, but through the fault of man, not God.

Also...

Apparently one caused that massive explosion in a USSR forest?

I do recall reading in some book that *something* blew up in Siberia, but a concensus of what exactly it was hadn't happened at the time. Course, it was ages ago (I'm talking like, before the 1940's) so it may just be a matter of facts getting jumbled over time, but whatever. And I haven't read the book in ages, so I may be wrong on that too.

Sure you can respond to any post. But since this was more of so directed at people who believe in god. Why bother...I seriously hope it was to knock the guy that said this, and not another way to knock religion.

I post in any thread having to do with religion, only because it's one of the few things I will vehemently argue about.

Same here. Religion is one of the few topics that I really enjoy discussing. As for why I replied to this thread, it was a mixture of both reasons. At first I wanted to explain why I thought that guy was an idiot, but then my response went off into me saying that it's idiots like him that turned me off from religion in the first place. In hindsight, I don't think that I attacked anyone's personal beliefs. At least not in this thread.
