Guest PuzzyBludPopzicle Report post Posted September 13, 2002 Some of you probably saw my thread about me taking my bro to his first metal show...now I bring the show recap or some shit...diggeth on 9/11 we left our sleepy little town about 3 hours before the show(we live about an hour away from calgary) so we could be sure to get to the arena with plenty of time to spare for mingling and the t-shirt stand and whatnot. 20 minutes into the drive to calgary I nearly get us all killed because of a retarded zombie driver pulling into the highway right in front of me going half highway speed, a quick sidestep to the other lane and many curses/fingers conclude the first adventure of the trip successfully. An uneventful journey the rest of the way filled us with hope that we wouldnt end up being roadkill. So we get into the city limits about 30 minutes later and we are making great time, despite rush hour traffic. We are now looking for the c-train station, but I take a wrong turn. Ooh boy we are in for it now...I don't know the city roads for shit and we quickly end up lost(although I foolishly passed up several opportunities to get directions). after nearly 2 fucking hours of aimless wandering we find our way to the train station and quickly get on and over to the arena. after waiting in line to get in we arrive to hear the last few bars of music from In Flames' set. FUCK! I'm pissed but since I didn't really know the band too well I got over it quickly. we get our seats as the crew is finishing setting up for Soulfly. 15 minutes or so later Soulfly hits the stage and the crowd gets hyperactive to the strains of 'Tribe' and several other songs off their new album "3". I'm wondering why the sound quality is so low in the arena, I can't discern bass from drums and guitar from static noise. Max's voice sounded very good tonight although he did stay in a more mid range area for most vocals. The crowd LOSES IT when the gang breaks into Sepul-motherfucking- tura's " Roots Bloody Roots", they just go nuts, I minorly mark out cuz I STILL CAN'T HEAR SHIT! They finish a pretty energetic set with a tribal drum bit(after a nice drum solo) and proceed to build the crowd up for Slayer. I notice security is non existant for the people who are lighting weed sticks, but I got busted for smoking a regular cigarette! seems about right cuz I was still smarting from being late and the massive toothache I suffer after dental work earlier in the day. I pop tylenol #3 and all is well. it seems like an eternity spans but finally FUCKING SLAYER HITS THE STAGE, and the crowd loses it. Now my bro gets into as they start by hitting us with some new stuff from 'God hates us all'. I get my first serious metal mark out when they break into a blood freezing shot of 'War Ensemble'. A large projection screen comes down for visual aid during the songs giving us nice evil footage to go with the songs. It's well put together as it gives us visuals that go perfectly with the songs(playing the music video along with 'seasons in the abyss' and other evil things) Basically the set is the exact same that appears on the " Decade of Aggression" live cd peppered with several songs from 'god hates....'. violence ensues when they break into "Raining Blood" and " South of Heaven". The roof is coming down and several people have actually made their way up into the rafters for a better look...thats dangerously metal man. The show closes with "Angel Of Death" and some evil hitler/nuclear weapon footage on the projecter. in summation: I still wish I didn't miss In Flames but slayer more than made up for and they proved my theory wrong that they were washed up. They kicked my ass and made me beg for more. Super tight playing from all members and DAVE LOMBARDO killing the skins. They proved me wrong and I couldnt be happier. Awesome show and they announced that Calgary is now gonna be a regular tour stop for them...nice.. Classy moment of the night. Max asking the crowd for a moment of silence in remembrance and then actually going to the side of the stage and saying a prayer, in plain view of a few thousand metallers. Max Cavalera- class act. Guest converge241 Report post Posted September 13, 2002 goddamn that sounds good. especially the setlist, where its derived from. Id like to have Soulfly out and have more IF and Slayer (well actually id like to have Nile in there but..). You NEED to see In Flames again in full at some point though

Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted September 15, 2002 Max is indeed a class act. He had a fan onstage to sing some song with him when they stopped by Worcester, and then had his step-son out for another. Too bad I hate Soulfly, because Max would make me like them if the music didn't suck balls. Oh, and ye of little faith...where are the blasphemers that spoke ill of thy true thrash metal lords SLAYER?
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted September 15, 2002 Not me, I've seen Slayer live. I have experienced the greatness. Nile is fucking BADASS, by the way. Eastern scales, songs about transforming into snakes and shit, -murderous- growls. I love 'em.
