Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 15, 2002 Which no-longer-alive teams do you wish were still playing today? This goes for any sport. Quebec Nordiques: I was a Nords fan way back, and when they finally won the Stanley Cup it was as the Avalanche. Houston Oilers Winnipeg Jets Hartford Whalers And on a related note, I miss the old Chicago Stadium. Though there's Jim McMahon's restaurant in Glenview/Northbrook that looks like it. Check it out if you're in the GCA.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted September 15, 2002 Basically both of the Canadian NHL teams that moved to the US (Quebec and Winnipeg), as well as the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers (if just so I could watch games from the Polo Grounds and Ebbett's Field, respectively [assuming both places would still be around]). Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted September 15, 2002 I second the Whale staying around. I remember going to Whaler home games when the Bruins were out of town. Pretty cool to have 2 major hockey franchises in the same vicinity (sp?). Then they moved the Whale, and I had to settle for, phffft, minor league hockey. Providence Bruins. -Hartford Whalers -Quebec Nordiques -Winnepeg Jets Oh, and it's not a sports team per say, but the Boston Garden. Man, I miss that place. Guest meanmaisch Report post Posted September 15, 2002 The Washington Senators, even though, for the most part, they were pretty much awful.
Guest Grenouille Report post Posted September 15, 2002 Quebec Nordiques. Living in New England everyone loves the Bruins. I personally can't stand them, a bunch of cheap bastards running the ship. My favorite team was the Nords, and now is the Avs. When my family would visit relatives in Quebec we'd always go to see the Nords play. I can still remember the Nords getting their ass handed to them by MINNESOTA North Stars.

I wouldnt say EVERYONE here loves the Bruins...I know ALOT of people who vehemently hate them because Jacobs wont bother to give us a championship caliber team. I sure aint buyin this BS that we had to let Guerin go so we could focus on Defense...and watch after this season either Samsonov or Thornton are gone...either of which will truly put me over the edge as a Bruin Hater... Dont get me wrong they're still my team but if they keep shit up like this I'm just gonna ignore hockey like the rest of the country seems to do now anyways. Long Live the NFL! Pray for the Celtics to actually give me SOME sports to watch between february and April, when my Redsox begin their next April-July playoff run.
Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 15, 2002 The Seattle Pilots are now the Milwaukee Brewers. And if the Expos get evicted we may see a third Washington Senators franchise. (Senators-->Twins, Senators-->Rangers, Expos-->Senators)

Guest DrTom Report post Posted September 16, 2002 None of these teams are gone, they've just moved. Doesn't that mean they're gone? Aren't the Dodgers gone from Brooklyn? The Colts from Baltimore? If the franchise still has the same nickname, I can see you making a case that the lineage is intact, but when the city and the nickname have changed, it might as well be a wholly different franchise. Very few people from the original city will want anything to do with it, that's for certain.
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted September 16, 2002 The Dteroit Vipers...ex IHL team. After multiple seasons of winning and an affiliation with Ottawa....Bill Davidson buys the Lightning..the Vipers become Tampa's farm team and instantly fall to the bottom of the IHL for two years.Attendence drops and as the IHL folds, the Vipers do not join the AHL ..they die. But they are still responsible for my best live game ever (and in their bad years,no less). They fall behind 4-0 after 1 period and eventually rally in the remaining two periods to tie the game with about 2 1/2 minutes in regulation. Then they proceed to win the shootout and win the game 5-4. Considering the Dodgers and Giants are under different ownership the ties to New York and Brooklyn have really been cut. Dodger and Giant fans should of shown up to more games. The owners of the team had every right to move. You're teams won the '54 and '55 W.S. and you're still a competive team and you're not showing up.

It was just changing times and people leaving the cities. Maybe television as well.

Well, this is tricky. The Avalanche and the Coyotes both have the Nordiques and the Jets included in their lineage despite/name-and-town changes. However, I believe the Ravens do not count the old Browns as part of their lineage, while the new Browns, an expansion team, does. The Titans consider the Oilers as part of their lineage, but because of the very gradual change from Houston Oilers to Tennessee Titans, it's hard not to. Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted September 21, 2002 Bring back America's team the Hartford Whalers! Bring back brass bonanza! Bring back the those sweater colors that no one else wore! Guest The Czech Republic Report post Posted September 25, 2002 Couldn't they've renamed the Houston franchise the Oilers? The Texans sucks major ass and reminds me of the '52 Texans or whatever that sucked so bad they got evicted and had the franchise cancelled. And they only team they ever beat were the Bears. The Texans sucks major ass and reminds me of the '52 Texans or whatever that sucked so bad they got evicted and had the franchise cancelled. They're not even the first football team in Texas to use that name. The CFL expansion team in San Antonio used that about 5 or 6 years ago, but they were only around for a year before folding. Also, the Avalanche and Canadiens are playing an exhibition game in Quebec City this Saturday night. They thought of having the Avs' players wear Nordiques' sweaters (only for the warm-up), but they decided against it, for whatever reason. That, in my opinion, would be an AWESOME game to go to, if just for the atmosphere in the old Colisée.
