Whenever I tell my friends that I listen to The Hives, they kinda laugh at me and say that they're not punk, which I know they're not. I guess they think that I think Hives=punk. Whatever.

Anyway, I just picked up their first CD, Barely Legal. Nothing but sheer goodness. Howlin' Pelle Almqvist, IMO, rules all when it comes to vocals. Dr. Dangerous is a madman on Bass. Nicholaus Arson and Vigilante are great on guitars (I'm not saying they're great like, say, Stevie Ray Vaughn or Gary Moore, but they're good) and Chris Dangerous can bang that drumset like a high school quarterback to his drunken prom date.....

What the fuck.....?

Yeah, anyway....they're good. Your opinions?

'Die.all.Right' is good as is 'Hate to say I told you so'. But 'Main Offender' pisses me off beyond all belief, except the video which is quite good.

Strangely enough, the stuff they haven't released from their latest album is only passable.

"Die, All Right" is an awesome song, and "Hate to Say I Told You So" is my song in my skate video part so it's obviously good :D ....but I can't say I've ever heard Main Offender.

Hm...ah well...."Supply and Demand" (off 'Veni Vedi Vicious') is a rippin song as well. Awesomeness is what this band represents....Fo Sho, my funk nizzles

One thing you can't fault the Hives on is their Get-Up.

Those guys dress like the shiznit.

(Did I just type Shiznit?)

Hives rock... but are definitely not punk rock.

Main Offender is a great song.

Main Offender is a great song.

No it isn't, not comapred to their other stuff anyway.

I personally am digging Barely Legal. The entire CD just rules it all, what with the music being much faster than VVV. Its really good, and has "Here We Go Again" on it...awesome song.

Do they have any other CD's out? or just BL and Triple V?

"THE HIVES ARE LAW." -- the video backdrop at the VMAs.

It's true, The Hives OWN. And they are the SHIZNIT. (I don't mind typing shiznit)

Any band that makes me do my psychotic late 60s-style seizure dance is okay in my book.

Fo sheez,

I love the psychotic dance...I do it too, kinda, only I look more like Howlin' Pelle when I do it than as a 60's dancer...go figure

and I LOVE your sig pic....I love Kylie

The Hives most certainly do rule. "Die, Alright" is a fucking fantastic song. And the video rocks too. I'd have to say that they are the best dressed group in music too. The performance at the VMA 2002 was probably one of the best performances of the night. And who else could close with:

"I know you want us to play more but that's all the time we have. You can turn off now."

THE HIVES ARE LAW, YOU ARE CRIME!!! :headbang:

I particularly like how the Hives lead into their live shows. To paraphrase:

"Hello America, we are the Hives! We have come here tonight to show you rock and roll, but be warned: your American government has decreed that we may play for but 40 minutes, for any greater exposure may create a tear in the fabric of space-time! Now, begin!"

Boring. Seen im in person...They can't carry a crowd...Annoying...Nothing new.

The Vines, Strokes, White Stripes. Get Up Kids and Hives are supposed to be the next "Great Music"...if so...we're screwed.

That's a stupid thing to say. Whenever rock goes through a mainstream revival it's a good thing. only two years ago they were playing nothing but nu-metal on alt. radio stations. Now I personally don't like the bands you listed, but if it gets people more into rock though the garage rock revial and "emo" bands it's a good thing. Also notice the screamo trend you can see on mtv (Blindside, Thursday, The Used), as well as bands like Sparta and Queen of the Stone Age making top 100 on the billboards, rock is definitely becoming more appealing again, and it's just beginning.

At The Drive-In WOULD HAVE been the saviors of rock music. Sigh. Maybe Sparta or Mars Volta can live up to the stigma. It sure better not be the Hives, Vines, or White Stripes. All of them I can handle in their original form - as the Pixies.

Queens of the Stone Age are really good though.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are the best band in the world.

So are the Pixies the band now everyone blindly accuses current bands of ripping off when they actually sound little like them? Both Vines and Hives bore me, but I don't think of the Pixies when I hear them.

As for the White Stripes, they're a terrific blend of rock, blues and country, and far surpass any popular rock band today in terms of quality.

Pardon my ignorance, I was judging these bands by their singles only. They all sound the same - and just like the Pixies. If they have other sounding stuff on their album - than I am mistaken.

i really like em, and really like main offender. Punk's been pretty much dead since about 1980 if we're gonna nit pick, but who gives a fuck anyways. I always thought they sounded like shit when live on TV but when i saw them in person they were great.

I'd say the Hives sound more like earlier Kinks stuff, based on their singles. The Vines could very well be accused of ripping off the Pixies vicariously, due to their shameless aping of Nirvana's sound. I've only heard "Get Free" and it definitely strikes me as Nirvana-lite. The White Stripes, on the other hand, are a thoroughly excellent band with two great albums (and one not-so-great one). I can't even fathom how their singles sound anything like the Pixies.

If you are referring to, Kinetic, the first White Stripes disc as being "not-so-great," then not only do I agree with you, I'd say that it is an understatement. The whole thing plays like half-thought out demos of songs that probably weren't going to be very good to begin with.

Posted

Exactly. Even the covers are half-assed. De Stijl, on the other hand, is predominantly good. I could give or take some of the throwaway tracks, like "Let's Build a Home" but the rest of it is pretty strong. White Blood Cells is most definitely the superior album, though, and it's one of those rare instances in which justice is done and a good band breaks through with their best album to date.

my opinion of the white stripes actually went down about 100 notches after seeing their live show. I thought they were really good for the first half and criminally BORING for the second. The set was just far too long for such a one dimensional and gimmicky outfit. And Meg is probably the worst musician ever to set foot on a stage that size. Good lord. And as much as i like bands like the hives they WISH they were RFTC and will never be fit to lick the shit of their shoes.

The Vines are horrible.

The Hives are good.

The Strokes are okay, but nothing special.

The White Stripes are also rather good.

Elbow, however, kicks all of their asses straight to hell. ;p

To be fair, The Vines are OK, at most Decent. Off "Highly Evolved," I think they sound pretty Modest Mouse-ish, I just don't know why. "Get Free" is a good single, but by NO MEANS a reason to buy their CD.

However, The Hives, H.I.M., and CKY rule all. Thank you.
