Guest Steve J. Rogers Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Basically something along the lines of saying something is happening when clearly it is not. I was thinking about this when coming up with a fan-fict I've been thinking about on a wrestler who nearly kills another in a messed-up Super-Suplex spot from the top rope. Basically the guy loses his footing and slips, losing control of his opponent who lands hard on the back of his neck and causes his head to "snap" and he is rendered out and not moving on the canvas. Anyway the thought was that since the move was part of a finishing sequence that the PBP guy would be reading the booking sheet for the match and not seeing whats in the ring but calling the action that should be happening while the crowd is stunned silent and the guys in the truck are screaming "SHUT UP! LOOK IN THE RING! MAN DOWN" in his headset. I had Michael Cole in mind when I thought about that though Steve
Guest DJ Jeff Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 When I think about embarrassing announcing calls, I always think about Cole. That guy always seems to talk about something that's not happening in the ring.
Guest Midnight Express83 Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 "Benoit is on the top rope going for a swan dive on Jericho at wrestlemania 2000" JR: OH NO! CRIPPLER CROSSFACE BY GOD!
Guest notJames Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 I don't know about ever, but if Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Christian, and Christopher Nowinski were ever in a match together, I think JR would have a stroke. For the sake of the topic, I'd go with Michael Cole giving away the title switch on the preview show of whatever PPV he did it at. (Sorry, I lent my SKeith Guide for the Wrestling Obsessed to Phil Mushnick and I never got it back...)
Guest Rob Edwards Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 It wasn't so much a call of something that wasn't going on but I found Cole getting the rules of the cage match at Unforgiven 2000 wrong and getting embarassed when JR corrected him pretty funny
Guest DJ Jeff Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 It wasn't so much a call of something that wasn't going on but I found Cole getting the rules of the cage match at Unforgiven 2000 wrong and getting embarassed when JR corrected him pretty funny I remember that. Probably the funniest Cole moment I can remember.
Guest Choken One Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 THE WORST was when Cole gave away the winner at WMXV.
Guest Rob Edwards Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Just had a flashback to the embarrasment that is the usually competent JR in the TLC series, if it wasn't a Dusley he just called a random name and hoped it was right ah well a one in four chance I guess!
Guest Leena Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Tony Schiavone: "That hay can be very abrasive!". Even Tony had to feel stupid after saying that.
Guest notJames Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Another Cole great (paraphrasing) Michael Cole: Rey Misterio hit him with the six-nineteen!!! [awkward pause] Tazz: Rey Rey's six-one-nine gets the job done... [another awkward pause] Truly, Tazz must have gotten glaucoma from rolling his eyes on that one. And not for nothing, but why does Cole always have to say that the Brendan Byrne... I mean, Continental Airlines Arena is "under the shadow of New York City"? That's just smacks of geographical elitism and I for one am appalled. Jersey Represent!!!
Guest evilhomer Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 I don't know about ever, but if Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Christian, and Christopher Nowinski were ever in a match together, I think JR would have a stroke. None really spring to mind, so I'll just go with the generic drop kick/punch clearly misses by multiple feet and the announcers still sell it like the wrestler was hit by a truck.
Guest Mulatto Heat Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 How can we forget the infamous "This handicap match has turned into a two-on-one affair!" I didn't know handicap matches were anything BUT those, Mr. Cole.
Guest Spaceman Spiff Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Schiavone mis-spoke, turning "backbreaker" into "breckbreaker" during a Jericho/Juvi match in WCW (I think it was Juvi). He compounded that by calling a choke by Jericho roughly 1.5 seconds before it happened. MY brother and I were watching it on tape, and had to rewind after both occurrences because we were like, "Did he just say that?", followed by both of us laughing our asses off.
Guest The Notorious CRD Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 I always find it sad when announcers aren't up on the names of some of the new holds or moves wrestlers use. JR used to be a lot better about this than he is now.
Guest Nater Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Anything Lawler says, but apparently the man has no soul to lose.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 "He must be fifty, Sixty, SEVENTY FEET UP IN TH' A-YER!!" - JR
Guest DJ Jeff Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 I loved it when Ross and Heyman used to argue over the stupidest things. Damn, that was hilarious.
Guest mach7 Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Well, as said whenever JR fucks up a "Chris" and calls him by the wrong last name. He's even done it with Edge & Christian, though. And the Hardyz. Also, he always used to call a double-team elevated neckbreaker by the Dudleys as "The 3d." But, the best one for me.. it's not that significant. But months and months ago, Cole was calling a cage match. And before a commercial, they were showing the cage, and Cole said something to the effect of calling the cage "a twisted MAZE of steel"... it's a cage. A CUBE!! *sighs*
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 THE WORST was when Cole gave away the winner at WMXV. What? Someone give sepcifics.
Guest crandamaniac Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 THE WORST was when Cole gave away the winner at WMXV. What? Someone give sepcifics. WMXV, Rock v.s Austin for the championship. Cole doing his normal shill routine announces that after the show, the Home Shopping Network will have the New world champion on there, thus giving away that Austin would win the match
Guest FeArHaVoC Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 How can you forget about the time Triple H said he was Bi?

Cole has to Mimic it on Smackdown. Like some people is a PACK OF DOGS! Same thing with the in the Shadow of New York, another JR comment. Cole hasn't come up with a Single Original Comment on his own
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 How can you forget about the time Triple H said he was Bi? Well, he did sleep with Chyna. (Rimshot!)
Guest Kotzenjunge Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 "And there is that flying leg kick!" -- Color jabroni on the Heroes of Wrestling PPV Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Will Scarlet Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 I always like how on Nitro a few years ago, Tony would often call out a move a few seconds before it happened. Another favourite of mine had to be one time when the heels were beating down Sting... Tony: HERE COMES LEX LUGER! *no one comes out, awkward pause* Bobby: I guess he got held up in the bathroom or something! A few seconds later Lex runs out to the ring, and makes the save, but it was obvious that he totally missed his cue for the save.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 "And there is that flying leg kick!" -- Color jabroni on the Heroes of Wrestling PPV Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge That was Michael Rosenbaum. I could hear Dutch Mantell roll his eyes.
Guest Nevermortal Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Remember when RVD got beat by Benoit for the IC belt, and JR said "Chris Benoit cheated to become the Intercontinental Title"
Guest DJ Jeff Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Remember when RVD got beat by Benoit for the IC belt, and JR said "Chris Benoit cheated to become the Intercontinental Title" I didn't know people could become titles.
Guest The Tino Standard Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Schiavone's classic "rail of pain" line about the guard rail around the ring is one of my all time favorites.
